Pounds to Kilograms Converter

Kilograms — kg

A pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, so kilograms = pounds × 0.45359237. A 50 lb suitcase therefore weighs 22.68 kg, and a 180 lb adult weighs 81.65 kg. To go the other way, divide kilograms by the same factor, or multiply by about 2.2046.

About this tool

Travellers checking a bag allowance, parents reading a US growth chart, home bakers following an American recipe and sellers filling in an international shipping form all meet the same problem: a weight printed in pounds that has to be entered in kilograms. Type the pound figure and the kilogram value appears straight away, together with the multiplication behind it, so the figure can be checked or copied into a form. This converter uses the avoirdupois pound found on scales, packaging and freight documents since 1959. Troy pounds for precious metals and pounds-force for loads are different quantities and give wrong answers with this factor. The swap control reverses the direction when you need pounds from kilograms.

How to use it

  1. Enter the pounds

Type the weight into the pounds field. Fractions of a pound go in as decimals, for example 7.25 for seven and a quarter pounds.

  2. Read off the kilograms

The kilogram result and the multiplication used appear as soon as the number is entered.

  3. Reverse or share

Use Swap for kilograms to pounds, or Share to copy a link that reopens this exact conversion.

Examples

A 50 lb checked bag

Pounds
50

Result Kilograms: 22.6796

  1. 50 lb × 0.453592 = 22.6796 kg

Many US carriers cap economy checked bags at 50 lb, which is about 22.7 kg, a little under the 23 kg limit used by most European airlines.

Body weight of 180 lb

Pounds
180

Result Kilograms: 81.6466

  1. 180 lb × 0.453592 = 81.6466 kg

A bathroom scale reading of 180 lb is roughly 81.6 kg, the figure a clinic outside the US would record.

A 5 lb sack of flour

Pounds
5

Result Kilograms: 2.268

  1. 5 lb × 0.453592 = 2.268 kg

The common American 5 lb flour sack holds about 2.27 kg, close to the 2.5 kg bags sold in Europe.

How it is calculated

kg = lb × 0.45359237

lb
weight in avoirdupois pounds
kg
the same mass in kilograms

The 1959 agreement between the United States, the United Kingdom and four Commonwealth countries fixed the international pound at exactly 0.45359237 kg, and NIST lists the same figure in SP 811. Because both scales start at zero mass, the conversion is a pure ratio: no offset, and the factor itself carries no rounding error. Any rounding you see comes only from the number of decimals displayed.

When not to use it

  • Weights given as pounds and ounces need the ounces turned into a decimal first, since 16 oz make one pound.
  • Troy pounds used for bullion are about 0.3732 kg, so this factor overstates them by roughly 21.5 %.
  • Pounds-force on a hoist or tension rating is a force and belongs in newtons, not kilograms.

Common mistakes

  • Halving the pound figure gives 25 kg for a 50 lb bag, about 2.3 kg too high, enough to miss a baggage limit.
  • Reading 5 lb 8 oz as 5.8 lb instead of 5.5 lb adds 0.14 kg to the result.
  • Using 0.45 as the factor drops about 0.8 %, or 1.4 kg on a 180 lb person.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the pound tied to the kilogram rather than the other way round?

Since 1959 the international pound has been a defined fraction of the kilogram, 0.45359237 kg exactly. The kilogram itself is defined through the Planck constant, so the pound inherits its precision from the SI.

How many pounds make one kilogram?

One kilogram is about 2.20462 pounds, the reciprocal of 0.45359237. That is why a 23 kg airline limit corresponds to roughly 50.7 lb.

Is the UK pound weight the same as the US pound?

Yes. Both countries signed the 1959 agreement, so a pound on a British scale and on an American scale both equal 0.45359237 kg. The stone, 14 lb, is a British unit, but the pound inside it is identical.

How do I convert a baby's weight of 7 lb 4 oz?

Four ounces is a quarter of a pound, so enter 7.25. The result is about 3.29 kg, which is how hospitals outside the US record birth weight.

What does lb stand for?

The abbreviation comes from the Latin libra, a Roman unit of weight. The plural is often written lbs in everyday use, though standards bodies write lb for both singular and plural.
