Enter the main keyword, pick search variations such as tutorial or how to, and add any extra keywords. The generator returns a comma-separated tag list ready to paste into YouTube Studio and counts it the way Studio does: sourdough bread plus sourdough bread tutorial uses 44 of the 500 characters.

About this tool

YouTube Studio gives every video a single tags box capped at 500 characters, and it counts more than the letters: a tag with a space in it is stored in quotes, and each comma counts too. Creators who paste a long list often hit the cap without knowing which tags were cut. This generator builds variations of your main keyword, merges in extra phrases, removes duplicates regardless of capital letters, and stops adding tags before the list would pass the limit. The table shows what each tag costs. YouTube itself says tags play a small part in discovery compared with the title, thumbnail and description, so treat them mainly as a way to catch common misspellings and close variants.

How to use it

  1. Type the main keyword

Use the phrase people would search, such as sourdough bread.

  2. Choose variations

Tick chips like how to, tutorial or review to add common search phrasings of the keyword.

  3. Add extra keywords

List related phrases or misspellings, separated by commas or new lines.

  4. Copy the tag list

Paste the Tags to paste line into the Tags field in YouTube Studio and check the characters left.

Examples

Sourdough bread tutorial

Main keyword
Sourdough Bread
Search variations
… tutorial
Extra keywords

Result Tags: 2
Tags to paste: sourdough bread, sourdough bread tutorial
Characters used (of 500): 44
Characters left: 456

  1. Tags built: main keyword, 1 modifier variation(s), 0 extra keyword(s); duplicates removed.
  2. Characters = tag lengths + 2 quotes per multi-word tag + 1 comma between tags = 44 of 500.

Two multi-word tags use 44 of the 500 characters once the quotes and the comma are counted.

Knitting channel

Main keyword
knit
Search variations
how_to; tips
Extra keywords
knitting patterns, Knit

Result Tags: 4
Tags to paste: knit, how to knit, knit tips, knitting patterns
Characters used (of 500): 50
Characters left: 450

  1. Tags built: main keyword, 2 modifier variation(s), 2 extra keyword(s); duplicates removed.
  2. Characters = tag lengths + 2 quotes per multi-word tag + 1 comma between tags = 50 of 500.

The repeated keyword Knit is dropped as a duplicate, leaving four tags in 50 characters.

How it is calculated

characters = Σ tag length + 2 × (tags with a space) + (number of tags − 1)

tag length
letters, digits and spaces in each tag after trimming
2
the quote marks YouTube adds around a tag that contains a space
tags − 1
one comma between each pair of tags

Each keyword is lowercased, stripped of commas, angle brackets, quotes and hash signs, and trimmed. The main keyword comes first, then one variation per chosen chip, then your extra keywords. A tag already in the list is skipped, and a tag that would push the total past 500 is left out with a warning.

When not to use it

  • For hashtags in the title or description, which follow different rules and show above the title.
  • As a substitute for a clear title and thumbnail, which carry far more weight in YouTube search.

Common mistakes

  • Filling all 500 characters with loosely related tags, which YouTube's policies treat as misleading metadata.
  • Forgetting that quotes around multi-word tags count toward the limit, so a list that looks short is rejected.

Frequently asked questions

How many characters can YouTube tags use?

The tags field holds 500 characters in total. Commas between tags count, and a tag containing a space counts two extra characters for the quotes YouTube wraps around it.

Do tags still help videos rank?

YouTube describes tags as having a minimal role in discovery. They are most useful when the keyword is often misspelled or has a common alternative name.

Why was one of my extra keywords dropped?

Either it duplicated a tag already in the list, ignoring capitals, or adding it would have passed the 500-character limit. A warning says how many were left out for length.

Why are all tags lowercase?

YouTube treats tags without regard to case, so lowercasing lets the generator catch duplicates such as Knit and knit and spend characters only once.

Can I use tags in other languages?

Yes. Arabic, accented and other scripts are kept as typed; only commas, quotes, angle brackets and hash signs are removed because Studio rejects or splits on them.

How many tags should a video have?

There is no fixed number. Five to fifteen focused tags covering the main phrase, a few variations and common misspellings is typical, well inside the limit.
