Paste your text and the tool drops every repeat of a word after its first appearance, or only back-to-back doubles if you pick that mode. For example, 'the cat the dog the cat' becomes 'the cat dog': six words in, three out, three duplicates removed. Capitals are ignored unless you tick the case option.

About this tool

Repeated words creep in from copy-paste, merged keyword lists and fast typing. This cleaner offers two jobs. Every repeat keeps the first time a word appears and drops each later copy, which suits tag lists, keyword sets and vocabulary lists. Back-to-back repeats only removes a word that immediately follows itself, the 'the the' typo, and leaves the rest of your prose intact. A table lists each repeated word with the number of copies dropped, and counts show words before and after. Line breaks are kept, but punctuation is not: the output is the words of each line joined by single spaces, so for formatted prose use the back-to-back mode and paste the fixes back by hand.

How to use it

  1. Add your text

Type or paste into the box, or open a .txt, .md or .csv file from your device.

  2. Pick what to remove

Choose Every repeat for word lists or Back-to-back repeats for doubled-word typos.

  3. Set case handling

Tick the capitals option if Apple and apple should count as different words.

  4. Copy the result

Copy the cleaned text and check the table to see which words were dropped.

Examples

Keep each word once

Your text
the cat the dog the cat
Remove
Every repeat
Treat capitals as different words
No

Result Cleaned text: the cat dog
Words before: 6
Words after: 3
Duplicates removed: 3
Share removed: 50%

  1. Split each line into words by Unicode letter rules: 6 words found.
  2. Kept the first time each word appears and dropped later repeats, ignoring capitals.
  3. Removed 3 of 6 words; 3 remain.

Two extra copies of the and one of cat are dropped, so six words become three.

Fix doubled words

Remove
Back-to-back repeats
Treat capitals as different words
No

Result Cleaned text: This is a test
Words before: 6
Words after: 4
Duplicates removed: 2
Share removed: 33.3%

  1. Split each line into words by Unicode letter rules: 6 words found.
  2. Dropped a word only when it repeats the word right before it, ignoring capitals.
  3. Removed 2 of 6 words; 4 remain.

Only words that repeat the one right before them are removed, the classic typo a proofreader catches.

Capitals ignored

Your text
Apple apple APPLE pie
Remove
Every repeat
Treat capitals as different words
No

Result Cleaned text: Apple pie
Words before: 4
Words after: 2
Duplicates removed: 2
Share removed: 50%

  1. Split each line into words by Unicode letter rules: 4 words found.
  2. Kept the first time each word appears and dropped later repeats, ignoring capitals.
  3. Removed 2 of 4 words; 2 remain.

With capitals ignored, Apple, apple and APPLE are one word, and the first spelling is kept.

How it is calculated

removed = words before − words after; share = removed ÷ words before × 100

words before
runs of Unicode letters or digits in the input, apostrophes and hyphens inside a word kept
words after
words kept: first occurrences, or words not equal to the word right before them

Each line is split into words by Unicode letter rules, so Arabic and accented words are handled. In Every repeat mode a word is kept the first time it is seen anywhere in the text and dropped afterwards. In Back-to-back mode a word is dropped only when it matches the previous word on the same line. Unless the capitals option is ticked, words are compared in lower case and the first spelling seen is the one kept.

When not to use it

  • For formatted prose where punctuation must survive, since the output rejoins words with single spaces.
  • For removing duplicate lines or list entries, where a duplicate line remover keeps whole lines intact.

Common mistakes

  • Using Every repeat on normal sentences, which deletes needed words like the and a after their first use.
  • Forgetting the capitals option when a proper noun and a common word share a spelling.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the two modes?

Every repeat removes a word wherever it reappears after its first use, so 'red blue red' becomes 'red blue'. Back-to-back repeats removes a word only when it directly follows itself, so 'red red blue red' becomes 'red blue red'.

Does it keep my line breaks?

Yes. Each line is cleaned and kept on its own line. Lines left with no words, including blank lines, are dropped from the output.

Why did my punctuation disappear?

The tool works on words, so commas, full stops and extra spaces are not carried over. Words inside each line are rejoined with single spaces. Apostrophes and hyphens inside a word, as in don't or well-known, stay.

Are capitalised words treated as duplicates?

By default yes: The and the count as the same word and the first spelling is kept. Tick the capitals option to treat them as different words.

Does a back-to-back repeat across two lines count?

No. Back-to-back mode compares words on the same line only, so a word ending one line and starting the next is left alone.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The cleaning runs in your browser and the text is not stored when you leave the page.
