A weighted GPA adds extra grade points for harder classes: usually 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP or IB, so an A in an AP class counts as 5.0 instead of 4.0. An AP A and a regular B, one credit each, give (5.0 + 3.0) ÷ 2 = 4.00 weighted and 3.50 unweighted.

About this tool

High-school transcripts often report two GPAs, and students applying to college or for scholarships want to know both. This calculator takes one row per course with its letter grade, level and credits, then returns the weighted GPA on a 5.0 scale, the unweighted 4.0 figure and the difference the harder classes make. A table lists each course's weighted and quality points, and a bar chart compares the weighted points course by course. One limit: schools do not agree on bonuses. Some give AP only +0.5, some cap how many weighted courses count, and some colleges recalculate GPA with their own rules, so check your school's policy before quoting the number.

How to use it

  1. Add a row per course

Type an optional course name, then pick the letter grade. Use Add course for more rows.

  2. Set the level

Choose Regular, Honors (+0.5) or AP / IB (+1.0) for each course.

  3. Enter credits

Use 1 for a full-year class and 0.5 for a semester class, or your school's credit values.

  4. Read both GPAs

Compare weighted and unweighted results, the per-course table and the bar chart, which you can download as PNG, SVG or CSV.

Examples

One AP A, one regular B

Your courses
AP Calculus × A × ap × 1; English 11 × B × regular × 1

Result Weighted GPA: 4.00
Unweighted GPA: 3.5
Boost from course level: 0.5
Total credits: 2
Courses counted: 2

  1. Weighted quality points = Σ(weighted points × credits) = 8
  2. Weighted GPA = 8 ÷ 2 credits = 4
  3. Unweighted GPA = 7 ÷ 2 = 3.5

The AP course adds a full point to the A, so the weighted GPA reaches 4.00 while the unweighted GPA stays at 3.50.

Honors, AP and regular mix

Your courses
Honors Chemistry × A × honors × 1; AP History × B+ × ap × 1; Spanish II × C × regular × 1

Result Weighted GPA: 3.60
Unweighted GPA: 3.1
Boost from course level: 0.5
Total credits: 3
Courses counted: 3

  1. Weighted quality points = Σ(weighted points × credits) = 10.8
  2. Weighted GPA = 10.8 ÷ 3 credits = 3.6
  3. Unweighted GPA = 9.3 ÷ 3 = 3.1

4.5 + 4.3 + 2.0 = 10.8 quality points over 3 credits gives 3.60 weighted, against 3.10 unweighted.

Courses with different credits

Your courses
Lab science × A × ap × 2; Elective × C × regular × 0.5

Result Weighted GPA: 4.40
Unweighted GPA: 3.6
Boost from course level: 0.8
Total credits: 2.5
Courses counted: 2

  1. Weighted quality points = Σ(weighted points × credits) = 11
  2. Weighted GPA = 11 ÷ 2.5 credits = 4.4
  3. Unweighted GPA = 9 ÷ 2.5 = 3.6

A two-credit AP A counts four times as much as a half-credit elective: (5.0 × 2 + 2.0 × 0.5) ÷ 2.5 = 4.40.

How it is calculated

weighted GPA = Σ (grade points + level bonus) × credits ÷ Σ credits

grade points
4.0 scale value of the letter: A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3 and so on down to F = 0
level bonus
0 for regular, 0.5 for honors, 1.0 for AP, IB or dual-enrolment courses; an F earns no bonus
credits
credit hours or units each course carries

Each course's letter grade is converted to its 4.0-scale value, and the level bonus is added. Multiplying by credits gives quality points; their sum divided by total credits is the weighted GPA. The unweighted GPA repeats the sum without bonuses, and the boost is the gap between the two.

When not to use it

  • Your school uses a 100-point or 6.0 scale with its own conversion table.
  • A college application asks for a recalculated GPA using only core academic subjects.

Common mistakes

  • Marking an ordinary class as honors because it felt hard, which inflates the result.
  • Giving every course 1 credit when semester classes are worth 0.5.
  • Comparing a weighted GPA from one school with an unweighted one from another.

Frequently asked questions

Can a weighted GPA be higher than 4.0?

Yes. With a full point added for AP and IB classes, straight A grades in those courses give 5.0, so weighted figures between 4.0 and 5.0 are normal for students with many advanced classes.

Do colleges use my weighted or unweighted GPA?

Many admissions offices look at both, and a large number recalculate GPA themselves, often stripping out electives and applying their own weighting. Rigor of the course list is usually judged separately from the number.

Why does an F in an AP class get no bonus here?

Most schools that weight grades only add the bonus to passing grades, so a failed advanced course counts as 0 rather than 1.0. That keeps a failing grade from looking like a D.

What is the difference between honors and AP weighting?

Honors classes are school-designed advanced courses and commonly receive 0.5 extra points. AP and IB courses follow external curricula with exams and commonly receive 1.0. Some districts weight both equally.

Does A+ count more than A?

On the standard 4.0 scale used here, A+ and A both convert to 4.0. A few schools give A+ a 4.3, which this calculator does not apply.

How do semester classes fit in?

Enter the class with its real credit value, such as 0.5 for a single semester. The calculation weights each course by credits, so a half-credit class moves the GPA half as much as a full-year one.
