GPA is total quality points divided by total credits, where quality points are credits times grade points (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2). An A in a 3-credit class, a B in a 4-credit class and a C in a 3-credit class give 30 points over 10 credits: a 3.00 GPA.

About this tool

High-school students filling in applications, and anyone comparing a report card against a scholarship minimum, often need the same grades read two ways: unweighted on the plain 4.0 scale, and weighted with extra points for harder classes. Enter each class with its letter grade, credit value and level. The calculator gives the unweighted GPA as the headline, the weighted GPA beside it, the nearest letter grade, total credits and quality points, plus a per-class table and a bar chart of weighted points you can save as PNG, SVG or CSV. The honors and AP/IB bonuses used here (+0.5 and +1.0) are the most common, but districts set their own, so a transcript GPA can differ.

How to use it

  1. Fill one row per class

Give the class a name if you want, pick the letter grade, enter its credits and choose Regular, Honors or AP / IB. Use Add course for more rows.

  2. Set the A+ value

Choose whether your school caps an A+ at 4.0 or counts it as 4.3.

  3. Compare the two GPAs

The headline is unweighted; the weighted GPA, letter equivalent and quality points sit below, with the per-class table and chart.

Examples

A, B and C over 10 credits

Your courses
A × 3 × regular; B × 4 × regular; C × 3 × regular
Value of an A+
4.0 (capped)

Result Unweighted GPA: 3.00
Weighted GPA: 3
Letter equivalent: B
Total credits: 10
Quality points: 30

  1. Quality points = sum of credits × grade points = 30
  2. Unweighted GPA = 30 ÷ 10 credits = 3

The four-credit B carries more weight than either three-credit class, so the GPA sits exactly at 3.00.

AP Calculus A, Honors English B+

Your courses
AP Calculus × A × 4 × ap; Honors English × B+ × 3 × honors
Value of an A+
4.0 (capped)

Result Unweighted GPA: 3.70
Weighted GPA: 4.49
Letter equivalent: A-
Total credits: 7
Quality points: 25.9

  1. Quality points = sum of credits × grade points = 25.9
  2. Unweighted GPA = 25.9 ÷ 7 credits = 3.7
  3. Weighted GPA = 31.4 ÷ 7 = 4.49 (honors +0.5, AP/IB +1.0, none on an F)

Unweighted, the pair averages 3.70. With +1.0 for AP and +0.5 for honors the weighted figure climbs to 4.49, above the 4.0 ceiling.

How it is calculated

GPA = Σ(credits × grade points) ÷ Σ credits; weighted GPA adds the level bonus to each passing grade before multiplying

credits
credit or unit value of the class (a semester class is often 1 in high school, 3 or 4 in college)
grade points
A 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0 and so on down to F 0; A+ is 4.0 or 4.3
level bonus
0 for regular, 0.5 for honors, 1.0 for AP or IB; never added to an F

Each class contributes its credits multiplied by its grade points, called quality points. Dividing the sum by total credits gives a credit-weighted average, so a four-credit class moves the GPA more than a one-credit elective. The weighted version repeats the sum after adding the level bonus to each passing grade, which is why it can exceed 4.0.

When not to use it

  • Pass/fail, audited or withdrawn classes do not carry grade points, so leave them out rather than entering a grade.
  • Schools on a 100-point or 5.0 base scale need their own conversion table first.

Common mistakes

  • Averaging letter grades without credits, which overstates short electives.
  • Adding the AP bonus to the unweighted GPA that colleges recalculate without it.
  • Counting a retaken class twice when the school replaces the earlier grade.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA treats every class on the same 0 to 4.0 scale. Weighted GPA adds points for difficulty, commonly 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP or IB, so an A in an AP class counts as 5.0 and the average can rise above 4.0.

Does an F in an AP class still get the bonus?

Not here, and not at most schools. The bonus rewards passing work in a harder class, so an F stays at 0 points whether the class was regular, honors or AP.

Why do credits matter so much?

Because the average is weighted by credits. A B in a 4-credit lab science pulls the GPA down more than a B in a 1-credit elective, since it contributes four times as many quality points.

Is an A+ worth 4.0 or 4.3?

It depends on the institution. Many high schools and colleges cap the A+ at 4.0, while some universities award 4.3. Pick the option your school's grading policy uses.

How do colleges read my GPA?

Admissions offices frequently recompute GPA from the transcript, counting only core academic classes such as English, maths, science, social studies and languages, and removing or capping the honors and AP bonus. That makes the unweighted figure the nearer match to what a reader sees.

What letter grade does my GPA correspond to?

The letter shown is the nearest step on the plus/minus scale: for example 3.65 sits closer to A- (3.7) than to B+ (3.3), so it reads as A-.
