A 16:9 frame is 16 units wide for every 9 units tall, so height = width × 9 ÷ 16 and width = height × 16 ÷ 9. A 1280-pixel width gives a 720-pixel height. From a screen diagonal, width = diagonal × 16 ÷ √337, so a 65-inch panel is about 56.65 in wide and 31.87 in tall.

About this tool

Video editors, photographers cropping for YouTube thumbnails, and anyone measuring a wall for a television keep running into the same 16:9 frame. Enter one known side or the diagonal and the calculator fills in the rest: the matching width and height, the diagonal, the area and the exact width-to-height ratio of 1.7778. It works in any unit, pixels or inches or centimetres, and the output uses the unit you typed. When the result is fractional, it tells you, since a pixel dimension has to be a whole number and only widths divisible by 16 land on an exact 16:9 grid. One limit: a TV's quoted diagonal covers the visible panel only, so the cabinet with its bezel and stand will be a little larger than the figures here.

How to use it

  1. Pick what you know

Choose Width, Height or Diagonal; only the matching box is shown.

  2. Enter the measurement

Type the value in pixels or any length unit. The results come back in that same unit.

  3. Read the frame

The headline shows width × height, with the diagonal, area and ratio listed below and the working shown step by step.

  4. Check the warning

If a side is not a whole number, pick a width that is a multiple of 16 for clean pixel sizes.

Examples

1920 px wide (Full HD)

I know the
Width
Width
1920

Result Width × height (16:9): 1920 × 1080
Width: 1,920
Height: 1,080
Diagonal: 2,202.91
Area (width × height): 2,073,600
Width ÷ height: 1.7778

  1. Height = 1920 × 9 ÷ 16 = 1080
  2. Diagonal = √(1920² + 1080²) = 2202.91

A 1920-pixel width gives the 1080-pixel height of the HDTV standard, with a pixel count of 2,073,600.

2160 px tall (4K UHD)

I know the
Height
Height
2160

Result Width × height (16:9): 3840 × 2160
Width: 3,840
Height: 2,160
Diagonal: 4,405.81
Area (width × height): 8,294,400
Width ÷ height: 1.7778

  1. Width = 2160 × 16 ÷ 9 = 3840
  2. Diagonal = √(3840² + 2160²) = 4405.81

Starting from the height, 2160 × 16 ÷ 9 returns the 3840-pixel UHD width.

55-inch 16:9 TV

I know the
Diagonal
Diagonal
55

Result Width × height (16:9): 47.94 × 26.96
Width: 47.94
Height: 26.96
Diagonal: 55
Area (width × height): 1,292.58
Width ÷ height: 1.7778

  1. √(16² + 9²) = √337 ≈ 18.3576
  2. Width = 55 × 16 ÷ 18.3576 = 47.94
  3. Height = 55 × 9 ÷ 18.3576 = 26.96
  4. Diagonal = √(47.94² + 26.96²) = 55

A 55-inch television panel is about 47.94 in wide and 26.96 in tall, before the bezel is added.

How it is calculated

h = w × 9 ÷ 16; w = h × 16 ÷ 9; w = d × 16 ÷ √337, h = d × 9 ÷ √337

w
Frame width
h
Frame height
d
Diagonal, corner to corner
√337
Diagonal of a 16 × 9 rectangle, about 18.3576

A 16:9 rectangle keeps width and height in fixed proportion, so one side fixes the other by simple scaling. For the diagonal, Pythagoras gives a 16 × 9 rectangle a diagonal of √(256 + 81) = √337, so each side is its share of 16 or 9 parts out of √337 times the real diagonal. The diagonal is then recomputed from both sides as a check.

When not to use it

  • Cinema formats such as 1.85:1 or 2.39:1 are not 16:9 and need a general aspect ratio calculator.
  • Phone screens near 19.5:9 or 20:9 give wrong sizes with a 16:9 split.
  • Outer TV cabinet size for a wall niche needs the maker's spec sheet, not the panel diagonal.

Common mistakes

  • Treating a 55-inch TV as 55 inches wide; that figure is the diagonal.
  • Rounding 562.5 px to 563 and ending up with a frame slightly off 16:9.
  • Mixing units, such as a width in centimetres read back as inches.

Frequently asked questions

What are the standard 16:9 resolutions?

The common ones are 1280 × 720 (HD), 1920 × 1080 (Full HD), 2560 × 1440 (QHD), 3840 × 2160 (4K UHD) and 7680 × 4320 (8K). Each width is a multiple of 16 and each height a multiple of 9, so the ratio is exact.

How wide is a 65-inch 16:9 TV?

The visible panel is about 56.65 inches wide and 31.87 inches tall, from 65 × 16 ÷ √337 and 65 × 9 ÷ √337. Add the bezel and stand from the maker's sheet for the full cabinet size.

Is 16:9 the same as 1.78:1?

Yes. 16 divided by 9 is 1.7778, which film and broadcast people often write as 1.78:1. The two names describe the same frame.

Why does my width give a fractional height?

Height is width × 9 ÷ 16, so it is whole only when the width divides evenly by 16. A 1000-pixel width gives 562.5 pixels; 1008 or 992 would give clean heights of 567 and 558.

How does 16:9 compare with 4:3?

At the same height, a 16:9 frame is one third wider than a 4:3 frame. At the same diagonal, a 16:9 screen has about 11 percent less area than a 4:3 screen, which is why older 4:3 TVs looked bigger for their size.

Can I use centimetres instead of inches?

Yes. The maths only scales the number you enter, so a 140 cm diagonal returns width and height in centimetres. Pixels, millimetres and feet work the same way.
