Road Trip Time

Route
Distance unit

Road distance from your map app, not the straight line.

Average including slow sections, usually 10–20% under the speed limit.

Road trip time is distance divided by average speed, plus the time you spend at rest stops. A 300-mile drive at 60 mph is 5 hours behind the wheel; stopping for 15 minutes after every 2 hours adds two stops, so you spend 5 h 30 min on the road.

About this tool

Map apps quote a driving time that assumes you never stop. On a long trip that number is wrong by an hour or more, and on a multi-day trip it says nothing about where each day ends. This calculator takes the road distance and the average speed you expect to hold, adds a rest stop of your chosen length after every set interval of driving, and caps each day at the number of driving hours you are willing to do. It returns the total time on the road, the pure driving time, the number of stops and a day-by-day breakdown. It does not model traffic, border crossings, fuel stops longer than your rest stops, or the overnight hours between days, so treat the answer as a planning figure and leave slack around it.

How to use it

  1. Pick miles or kilometres

The speed is read in the same unit per hour, so 60 means 60 mph or 60 km/h.

  2. Enter distance and average speed

Use the road distance from your route planner and a realistic average, a little under the posted limit.

  3. Set your rest stops

Slide the interval between stops and set how many minutes each stop lasts.

  4. Cap the driving day

Choose the most hours you will drive in one day; the table then lists each day's driving and stops.

Result Total time on the road: 5 h 30 min
Pure driving time: 5 h 0 min
Rest stops: 2
Time spent at stops: 0 h 30 min
Driving days: 1

  1. Driving time = 300 mi ÷ 60 mi/h = 5 h (5 h 0 min)
  2. Days at up to 8 h of driving a day = 1
  3. Rest stops (one after every 2 h of driving, none at the end of a day) = 2 × 15 min = 0 h 30 min
  4. Time on the road = 5 h 0 min + 0 h 30 min = 5 h 30 min

Five hours of driving with a 15-minute stop after every two hours puts you on the road for five and a half hours.

Result Total time on the road: 11 h 0 min
Pure driving time: 10 h 0 min
Rest stops: 3
Time spent at stops: 1 h 0 min

  1. Driving time = 1000 km ÷ 100 km/h = 10 h (10 h 0 min)
  2. Days at up to 8 h of driving a day = 2
  3. Rest stops (one after every 2 h of driving, none at the end of a day) = 3 × 20 min = 1 h 0 min
  4. Time on the road = 10 h 0 min + 1 h 0 min = 11 h 0 min

Ten hours of driving splits into an 8-hour first day with three stops and a 2-hour second day with none.

How it is calculated

T = D ÷ v + n × b, with n = Σ over days of (⌈day hours ÷ i⌉ − 1)

D
road distance
v
average speed in the same unit per hour
i
hours of driving between rest stops
b
length of one rest stop
n
number of rest stops

Driving time is distance over average speed. That time is split into days of at most the daily limit. Within each day a stop falls after every full interval of driving, but not at the very end of the day, because arriving or stopping for the night replaces it. The stop count times the stop length is added to the driving time. Overnight hours are not counted in the total.

When not to use it

  • Do not use it for commercial driving, where legal hours-of-service rules set breaks.
  • It is not a live traffic estimate for a specific departure time.
  • For flights or trains, average speed is not the right model.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the speed limit as the average speed, which ignores towns, junctions and slow traffic.
  • Using straight-line distance instead of road distance.
  • Forgetting that fuel and meal stops often run longer than a quick rest break.

Frequently asked questions

What average speed should I enter for highway driving?

On open motorway or interstate driving, many trips average about 85–90% of the speed limit once on-ramps, slower traffic and short slowdowns are counted. Through towns or mountains the average can drop to half the limit. If your map app quotes a time, divide its distance by that time to get its assumed average.

How often should I stop on a long drive?

Road safety bodies commonly suggest a break of at least 15 minutes every two hours. That is the default here. Set a shorter interval if you are driving at night or with children.

Why is there no stop at the end of each day?

When a day's driving ends you stop for the night, so a rest break at that point would be double-counted. A 4-hour day with a 2-hour interval therefore gets one stop, after hour 2, not two.

Does the total include overnight stays?

No. The total is the time you spend on the road: driving plus rest stops. The day table shows how that time is shared out, and you add your own overnight hours between days.

How many hours a day is reasonable to drive?

Many travellers plan about 8 hours of driving a day, which with stops makes a 9–10 hour travel day. The tool warns when the daily limit is above 10 hours, where fatigue becomes a real risk for most drivers.

Can I use kilometres and km/h?

Yes. Choose Kilometres and enter the speed in km/h. A 1,000 km trip at 100 km/h is 10 hours of driving, which at 8 hours a day takes two days.
