Travel time equals distance divided by average speed, plus any time spent stopped. A 250-mile drive at an average 50 mph is 5 hours of moving time; add two 15-minute stops and the trip takes 5 hours 30 minutes door to door. Enter your own distance, speed and stops to get the total.

About this tool

Planning a departure time, a hotel check-in or a pickup depends on knowing how long the road will take. This calculator divides your route distance by a realistic average speed, then adds the stops you expect to make for fuel, food or rest. It returns the total in hours and minutes, the split between moving time and stopped time, the same total as decimal hours for logbooks or timesheets, and the distance converted between kilometres and miles. It works in either unit system. The one limit is the average speed itself: the result is only as good as that figure, and real averages on mixed roads are usually well below the posted limit once towns, junctions and traffic are counted.

How to use it

  1. Pick the unit

Choose kilometres with km/h or miles with mph; distance and speed use the same system.

  2. Enter distance and speed

Type the route length from your map app and the average speed you expect to hold over the whole trip.

  3. Add stops

Use the − and + buttons to set how many stops you plan, and enter the minutes each one lasts.

  4. Read the breakdown

The total appears at the top, with moving time, stop time, decimal hours and the converted distance below.

Examples

300 km at 60 km/h, no stops

Distance unit
Kilometres (km/h)
Distance
300
Average speed
60
Number of stops
0
Length of each stop
15

Result Total travel time: 5 h 0 min
Time on the move: 5 h 0 min
Time spent at stops: 0 min
Total in decimal hours: 5
Distance in the other unit: 186.4 mi

  1. Moving time = 300 km ÷ 60 km/h = 5 h = 5 h 0 min
  2. Break time = 0 × 15 min = 0 min
  3. Total = 5 h 0 min + 0 min = 5 h 0 min

Pure driving time: 300 divided by 60 gives exactly five hours.

250 miles at 50 mph with two 15-minute stops

Distance unit
Miles (mph)
Distance
250
Average speed
50
Number of stops
2
Length of each stop
15

Result Total travel time: 5 h 30 min
Time on the move: 5 h 0 min
Time spent at stops: 30 min
Total in decimal hours: 5.5
Distance in the other unit: 402.3 km

  1. Moving time = 250 mi ÷ 50 mph = 5 h = 5 h 0 min
  2. Break time = 2 × 15 min = 30 min
  3. Total = 5 h 0 min + 30 min = 5 h 30 min

Five hours of driving plus half an hour of breaks puts arrival five and a half hours after departure.

100 km at 80 km/h

Distance unit
Kilometres (km/h)
Distance
100
Average speed
80
Number of stops
0
Length of each stop
15

Result Total travel time: 1 h 15 min
Time on the move: 1 h 15 min
Time spent at stops: 0 min
Total in decimal hours: 1.25
Distance in the other unit: 62.1 mi

  1. Moving time = 100 km ÷ 80 km/h = 1.25 h = 1 h 15 min
  2. Break time = 0 × 15 min = 0 min
  3. Total = 1 h 15 min + 0 min = 1 h 15 min

100 ÷ 80 is 1.25 hours, which reads as 1 hour 15 minutes on the clock.

How it is calculated

T = d ÷ v + n × s

T
total travel time
d
distance in km or miles
v
average speed in km/h or mph
n
number of stops
s
minutes per stop

Distance divided by average speed gives moving time in hours, which is multiplied by 60 to get minutes. Stop time is the number of stops times their length. The two are added and the total is rounded to the nearest minute, then shown as hours and minutes. Converting between units uses the exact definition 1 mile = 1.609344 km.

When not to use it

  • Flights, where taxi, boarding and airport time dominate the total.
  • Routes with ferries or border crossings that run on fixed schedules.
  • Live traffic estimates; a navigation app sees current congestion and this does not.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the speed limit instead of a true average, which makes the trip look shorter.
  • Mixing miles of distance with a km/h speed.
  • Forgetting fuel and meal stops on drives longer than three or four hours.
  • Reading 1.5 decimal hours as 1 hour 50 minutes; it is 1 hour 30 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

What average speed should I enter for a road trip?

Motorway-heavy routes often average 90–100 km/h (55–65 mph) once slowdowns are included, while country roads with villages are nearer 50–70 km/h (30–45 mph). Your map app's distance and time for the same route give a good check: divide its distance by its time to see the average it assumes.

How do I convert decimal hours to hours and minutes?

Keep the whole number as hours and multiply the fraction by 60. For 3.75 hours, 0.75 × 60 = 45, so the trip is 3 hours 45 minutes. The calculator shows both forms side by side.

How often should I stop on a long drive?

Many road-safety organisations advise a break of at least 15 minutes about every two hours of driving. On a 600 km day at 90 km/h that is roughly three stops, which adds 45 minutes to the 6 h 40 min of driving.

Does the result include time zone changes?

No. It gives elapsed time only. If your route crosses a time zone, add or subtract the offset from your departure clock time to find the local arrival time.

Can I use it for cycling or walking?

Yes. Enter a typical average such as 15–20 km/h for touring cycling or about 5 km/h for walking, and add rest stops the same way. The formula does not care what is moving.

Why is my real trip longer than the estimate?

Most underestimates come from an optimistic average speed. Urban sections, roadworks and queues pull the average down far more than a few fast stretches pull it up, so use a lower figure for routes that pass through cities.
