A Classic Learning Test total is the sum of three section scores, each worth up to 40 points, for a maximum of 120. For example, 36 in Verbal Reasoning, 38 in Grammar/Writing and 34 in Quantitative Reasoning add to 108, which is 90% of the maximum and an average of 36 per section.

About this tool

Students sitting the Classic Learning Test, and the parents and counsellors helping them plan, often have section results in hand and want the composite figure that colleges and scholarship programmes quote. This calculator adds the three section scores, shows the total as a share of 120, gives the average per section and tells you how many points separate you from a target total such as a scholarship cut-off. A bar chart sets the three sections side by side and highlights the lowest one, which is usually where extra practice pays back fastest. One limit: it works with the section scores printed on your report and does not convert raw answer counts from practice booklets, nor does it estimate an equivalent SAT or ACT score.

How to use it

  1. Enter the three section scores

Use the − and + buttons or type each section score from 0 to 40.

  2. Set a target total

Drag the slider or type the total you are aiming for, from 0 to 120.

  3. Read the total and the gap

The total, percentage, section average and points still needed update as you change any value.

  4. Check the section chart

The bar chart marks your lowest section; download it as PNG, SVG or CSV if you want to keep a record.

Examples

Perfect paper: 40, 40, 40

Verbal Reasoning

Grammar/Writing
40
Quantitative Reasoning
40
Target total
120

Result CLT total score (out of 120): 120
Share of the 120-point maximum: 100%
Average per section: 40
Points still needed for target: 0
Lowest section: Verbal Reasoning (40/40, 0 points of room)

  1. Total = 40 + 40 + 40 = 120 out of 120
  2. Share of maximum = 120 ÷ 120 × 100 = 100%
  3. Points to target = max(0, 120 − 120) = 0

Every section at its 40-point ceiling gives the top CLT total of 120, so no points remain toward any target.

36 + 38 + 34 against a 100 target

Verbal Reasoning
36
Grammar/Writing
38
Quantitative Reasoning
34
Target total
100

Result CLT total score (out of 120): 108
Share of the 120-point maximum: 90%
Average per section: 36
Points still needed for target: 0
Lowest section: Quantitative Reasoning (34/40, 6 points of room)

  1. Total = 36 + 38 + 34 = 108 out of 120
  2. Share of maximum = 108 ÷ 120 × 100 = 90%
  3. Points to target = max(0, 100 − 108) = 0

The sections add to 108, which is 90% of the maximum and already clears a 100-point threshold.

75 total aiming for 90

Verbal Reasoning
25
Grammar/Writing
30
Quantitative Reasoning
20
Target total
90

Result CLT total score (out of 120): 75
Share of the 120-point maximum: 62.5%
Average per section: 25
Points still needed for target: 15
Lowest section: Quantitative Reasoning (20/40, 20 points of room)

  1. Total = 25 + 30 + 20 = 75 out of 120
  2. Share of maximum = 75 ÷ 120 × 100 = 62.5%
  3. Points to target = max(0, 90 − 75) = 15

Quantitative Reasoning at 20/40 is the lowest section and has the most room to recover the 15 missing points.

How it is calculated

Total = V + G + Q; Share = Total ÷ 120 × 100; Gap = max(0, Target − Total)

V
Verbal Reasoning section score, 0–40
G
Grammar/Writing section score, 0–40
Q
Quantitative Reasoning section score, 0–40
Target
The total you are aiming for, 0–120

The CLT reports each of its three sections on a 0–40 scale and the composite is their plain sum, so no weighting is applied. The share of the maximum divides the total by 120. The gap is the target minus the total, floored at zero once the target is met. The lowest section is flagged together with the points it could still gain before reaching 40.

When not to use it

  • Not for converting a CLT total into an SAT or ACT equivalent.
  • Not for scoring a practice test from raw answer counts with a different scale.
  • Not for the CLT8 or CLT10 younger-grade tests, which use their own score ranges.

Common mistakes

  • Entering a percentile from the report instead of the section score.
  • Assuming one section counts more than another; all three carry equal weight.
  • Comparing a total against a scholarship threshold that applies to a superscore.

Frequently asked questions

What is the highest possible CLT score?

The maximum is 120: 40 in Verbal Reasoning, 40 in Grammar/Writing and 40 in Quantitative Reasoning. A total of 120 means every section reached its ceiling.

Are the three CLT sections weighted equally?

Yes. Each section is reported out of 40 and the composite is a straight sum, so a point gained in Quantitative Reasoning moves the total exactly as much as a point in Verbal Reasoning.

Can I use this to build a CLT superscore?

Yes. Enter your best Verbal Reasoning, best Grammar/Writing and best Quantitative Reasoning score from different sittings, and the total is the superscore. Check that the college or scholarship you are applying to accepts superscores before relying on that figure.

Why does the tool point to my lowest section?

The lowest section has the most room before its 40-point ceiling. With a target 15 points away and one section sitting at 20/40, that section alone could close the gap, whereas a section at 38 can add only 2.

Does the calculator give an SAT or ACT equivalent?

No. Concordance tables between the CLT and other admissions tests are published by the test maker and change between editions, so this page sticks to the CLT total itself rather than estimating a score on another test.

What does the points-needed figure show once I pass my target?

It shows 0. The gap is floored at zero, so exceeding a target by 8 points reads the same as meeting it exactly; the total itself tells you how far above the target you are.
