An IB Diploma score is the sum of six subject grades, each 1 to 7, plus up to 3 core points from the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay matrix, for a maximum of 45. For example, grades 7, 6, 6, 5, 5, 5 make 34, and an EE A with a TOK B adds 3, giving 37.

About this tool

IB students estimating final results, and counsellors checking predicted grades against university offers, need the same arithmetic: six subject grades plus the core bonus. This calculator takes three Higher Level and three Standard Level grades, looks up the core points from your Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge letters, and returns the total out of 45. It also flags the points-based failing conditions: a total under 24, any grade 1, three or more 2s, four or more grades of 3 or below, and an E in either core component. A scale shows where the total sits against the 24-point minimum. It does not check the separate HL and SL point minimums, CAS completion or academic misconduct rulings, so a total that meets the conditions here is still provisional until the IB issues results.

How to use it

  1. Enter six subject grades

Type a whole-number grade from 1 to 7 for each subject; the first three are labelled HL and the last three SL.

  2. Pick the core letters

Choose the Extended Essay and TOK grades from A to E; the matrix converts them to 0-3 core points.

  3. Read the total and flags

The total out of 45 appears with subject and core points shown separately, and any failing condition listed as a warning.

Result IB Diploma total (out of 45): 37
Subject points (out of 42): 34
Core points (out of 3): 3
Diploma conditions: Meets the points conditions
Share of 45 points: 82.2%

  1. Subject points = 7 + 6 + 6 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 34
  2. Core points (EE A, TOK B) = 3
  3. Total = 34 + 3 = 37 out of 45

Strong HL grades plus an A essay. The matrix awards the full 3 core points, so the student reaches 37 of 45.

Result IB Diploma total (out of 45): 27
Subject points (out of 42): 26
Core points (out of 3): 1
Diploma conditions: Meets the points conditions
Share of 45 points: 60%

  1. Subject points = 5 + 5 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 26
  2. Core points (EE C, TOK C) = 1
  3. Total = 26 + 1 = 27 out of 45

26 subject points and a single core point give 27, comfortably above the 24-point minimum.

Subject points (out of 42): 31
Core points (out of 3): 2
Diploma conditions: Does not meet diploma conditions
Share of 45 points: 73.3%

  1. Subject points = 7 + 7 + 6 + 1 + 5 + 5 = 31
  2. Core points (EE B, TOK B) = 2
  3. Total = 31 + 2 = 33 out of 45

The total clears 24, but a grade 1 in any subject is a failing condition on its own.

How it is calculated

Total = G1 + G2 + G3 + G4 + G5 + G6 + Core(EE, TOK)

G1-G6
Subject grades, each a whole number from 1 to 7
Core(EE, TOK)
Bonus points from the IB matrix: 0 to 3, or a failing condition if either letter is E
Total
Diploma points out of 45

The IB matrix pairs the two core letters: A/A, A/B and B/A give 3 points; A/C, A/D, B/B, B/C, C/A, C/B and D/A give 2; B/D, C/C and D/B give 1; C/D, D/C and D/D give 0. An E in either component awards no points and fails the diploma. After summing, the tool tests the points-based failing conditions from the IB general regulations.

When not to use it

  • Courses-only candidates receive separate certificates, not a 45-point total.
  • Some schools still use pre-2015 records with a different core matrix.
  • It cannot confirm the HL 12-point and SL 9-point minimums for unusual subject mixes.

Common mistakes

  • Adding the TOK and EE letters as numbers instead of using the matrix.
  • Assuming 24 points always passes even when a grade 1 was awarded.
  • Counting a seventh subject that sits outside the six examined ones.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum IB Diploma score?

45 points: 42 from six subjects graded up to 7, and 3 from the core. A 45 needs six 7s and a core pairing of A/A, A/B or B/A.

How many points do I need to pass the IB Diploma?

At least 24, but the total alone is not enough. Any grade 1, three or more grade 2s, four or more grades of 3 or below, or an E in TOK or the Extended Essay each fails the diploma, as do the HL and SL point minimums.

How are TOK and Extended Essay grades turned into points?

Through a fixed matrix. Two As or an A with a B give 3 points; a pair of Cs gives 1; a C with a D, or two Ds, gives 0. An E in either one gives no points and is a failing condition.

Does it matter which subjects are Higher Level?

Not for the total, since HL and SL grades both count 1 to 7. It matters for the separate rule that HL grades must sum to at least 12 (or 16 with four HL subjects) and SL to at least 9, which this calculator does not test.

What does a total like 38 mean for university offers?

38 out of 45 is about 84% of the maximum. Many selective UK universities ask for 36 to 40 points, often with specific HL grades such as 6, 6, 6, so check the subject conditions as well as the total.

Can I use predicted grades?

Yes. Entering predicted grades gives a predicted total, which is the figure most university applications use. Final grades can move by a point either way, so try a few combinations to see your margin above an offer.
