College GPA is credit-weighted: multiply each course's credits by its grade points, add those quality points, and divide by total credits. A three-credit A (4.0) and a four-credit B (3.0) give 24 quality points over 7 credits, a 3.43 GPA, not the 3.50 a simple average would give.

About this tool

Undergraduates checking scholarship cut-offs, probation limits or graduate-school minimums usually need their GPA before the registrar posts it. Enter each class as a row with its credit hours and letter grade; the calculator converts grades on the common plus/minus 4.0 scale (A- 3.7, B+ 3.3 and so on), totals the quality points and gives the term GPA. Choose Include earlier terms, add your current cumulative GPA and completed credits, and it shows where your overall GPA will land. A table lists each course's quality points. One limit: schools differ on A+ (some award 4.3), on pass/fail and withdrawn courses, and on repeated classes, so the official figure on your transcript can differ.

How to use it

  1. Add a row per course

Type the course name if you like, its credit hours and the letter grade. Use Add course for more rows.

  2. Choose the result

Pick Include earlier terms and enter your cumulative GPA so far and the credits behind it.

  3. Read the result

The headline is your term GPA, or your new cumulative GPA when earlier terms are included; the table shows quality points per course.

This term only

Result GPA: 3.43
Term GPA: 3.43
Credits this term: 7
Quality points: 24
Grade band: B+ to A- range

  1. Quality points = Σ(credits × grade points) = 24
  2. Term GPA = 24 ÷ 7 credits = 3.43

The four-credit B weighs more than the three-credit A, so the term GPA lands at 3.43 rather than the 3.50 a plain average of 4 and 3 would suggest.

This term only

Result GPA: 2.90
Term GPA: 2.9
Credits this term: 10
Quality points: 29
Grade band: C to B range

  1. Quality points = Σ(credits × grade points) = 29
  2. Term GPA = 29 ÷ 10 credits = 2.9

An A-, a B+ and a four-credit C give 29 quality points over 10 credits, a 2.90 term GPA.

Result GPA: 3.24
Term GPA: 3.43
Cumulative GPA: 3.24
Credits this term: 7
Quality points: 24
Grade band: B+ to A- range

  1. Quality points = Σ(credits × grade points) = 24
  2. Term GPA = 24 ÷ 7 credits = 3.43
  3. Cumulative GPA = (3.2 × 30 + 24) ÷ (30 + 7) = 3.24

A 3.43 term on top of 30 credits at 3.20 moves the cumulative GPA only to 3.24, because the earlier credits outnumber the new ones.

How it is calculated

GPA = Σ(credits × grade points) ÷ Σ credits; cumulative = (prior GPA × prior credits + term quality points) ÷ (prior credits + term credits)

Each grade is turned into points on the plus/minus 4.0 scale used by most U.S. colleges, multiplied by the course's credit hours to give quality points, and the total is divided by graded credits. For a cumulative figure the earlier GPA is turned back into quality points by multiplying by its credits, so a long record moves slowly.

When not to use it

  • For high-school transcripts with honors or AP weighting, use a weighted GPA tool.
  • If your college uses a 4.3 or 5.0 scale, the points here will understate your grades.
  • Pass/fail and withdrawn courses carry no grade points, so leave them out rather than entering them.

Common mistakes

  • Averaging the letter grades without weighting by credit hours.
  • Entering total credits attempted instead of graded credits for the prior GPA.
  • Counting a repeated course twice when your school replaces the old grade.

Frequently asked questions

What does a 3.0 GPA mean in letter grades?

A 3.0 is a B average on the 4.0 scale. You can reach it with all B grades, or a mix such as As and Cs that average out when weighted by credit hours.

Why does a lab or four-credit class move my GPA more?

Grade points are multiplied by credits, so a four-credit course contributes a third more quality points than a three-credit one with the same grade. A low grade in a heavy course pulls the average down more.

Is an A+ worth more than an A?

On most U.S. scales an A+ is capped at 4.0, which this calculator uses. A minority of schools award 4.3 for an A+; check your catalog if yours does.

How much can one term raise my cumulative GPA?

It depends on how many credits you already have. With 30 credits at 3.20, a 3.43 term of 7 credits only lifts you to 3.24. Early in a degree each term carries far more weight.

Do transfer credits count toward my college GPA?

Usually transfer credits count toward graduation but not toward your institutional GPA. Use only credits graded at your current school in the prior-credits box unless your registrar says otherwise.

What GPA do graduate schools look for?

Many graduate programs list 3.0 as a minimum, and competitive programs often see averages of 3.5 or higher. Requirements vary widely by field and school.
