A d4 is a four-sided die that gives 1, 2, 3 or 4 with equal chance, so one roll averages 2.5. Set how many dice to roll and any modifier: 3d4+3, for example, totals between 6 and 15 and averages 10.5. Each die result is listed under the total.

About this tool

Four-sided dice are the pyramid-shaped ones that are easy to lose and painful to step on. Tabletop players reach for them for dagger damage, small healing spells and 3d4+3 missile volleys, and teachers use them for probability lessons with only four outcomes. This roller throws up to 100 virtual d4 at once, adds a positive or negative modifier, and lists every die alongside the total. It also shows the lowest and highest totals the roll can produce and the average you would see over many rolls. It does not reroll ones, drop the lowest die or handle mixed dice like 1d4+1d6; roll those parts separately.

How to use it

  1. Set the number of dice

Use the − and + buttons to choose how many d4 to roll, from 1 to 100.

  2. Add a modifier

Type a bonus such as 3 or a penalty such as -1; it is applied once to the whole roll.

  3. Read the roll

The total sits at the top, with the notation, possible range, average and each die result below it.

Examples

One d4

Number of d4 dice
1
Modifier
0

Result Total: 3
Roll: 1d4
Lowest possible: 1
Highest possible: 4
Average total: 2.5
Dice showing 4: 0

  1. 1d4: dice 3 = 3
  2. Expected total = 2.5 × 1 = 2.5

A single four-sided die lands on 1, 2, 3 or 4 with equal chance, so the long-run average is 2.5.

3d4+3

Number of d4 dice
3
Modifier
3

Result Total: 10
Roll: 3d4+3
Lowest possible: 6
Highest possible: 15
Average total: 10.5
Dice showing 4: 0

  1. 3d4+3: dice 3 + 2 + 2 = 7 + 3 = 10
  2. Expected total = 2.5 × 3 + 3 = 10.5

Three d4 plus 3 always lands between 6 and 15 and averages 10.5.

2d4−1

Number of d4 dice
2
Modifier
-1

Result Total: 3
Roll: 2d4-1
Lowest possible: 1
Highest possible: 7
Average total: 4
Dice showing 4: 0

  1. 2d4-1: dice 3 + 1 = 4 − 1 = 3
  2. Expected total = 2.5 × 2 − 1 = 4

Two d4 minus one ranges from 1 to 7 with an average of 4.

How it is calculated

total = r₁ + r₂ + … + rₙ + m; average = 2.5 × n + m

rᵢ
the result of die i, a whole number from 1 to 4
n
number of dice rolled
m
modifier added once to the sum

Each die is drawn independently and uniformly from 1 to 4 using the browser's random source. A single d4 has mean (1+2+3+4)/4 = 2.5, so n dice average 2.5n. The lowest total is n + m (every die shows 1) and the highest is 4n + m (every die shows 4). Totals cluster near the average as more dice are added.

When not to use it

  • Tournament or organised play that requires physical dice rolled at the table.
  • Rolls that mix die sizes in one expression, such as 1d4+1d8, which this page does not parse.

Common mistakes

  • Adding the modifier to every die instead of once to the total.
  • Reading the average as a likely single result; one d4 never actually shows 2.5.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average roll of a d4?

The four faces 1, 2, 3 and 4 are equally likely, so the mean is 10 ÷ 4 = 2.5. Two d4 average 5, three average 7.5, and so on.

What does 3d4+3 mean?

Roll three four-sided dice, add their faces together, then add 3. The result runs from 6 to 15 and averages 10.5.

How do you read a real d4?

Most pyramid d4 show the result on the top point or along the bottom edge, depending on the design. Some crystal-shaped d4 roll like a long prism and read on the upward face.

Are the virtual rolls fair?

Each face has a one-in-four chance on every die, and dice do not influence each other. Streaks of the same number happen with fair dice too; four 1s in a row has a 1 in 256 chance.

Can the modifier be negative?

Yes. Enter a value like -2 and it is subtracted once from the dice sum. With few dice a large penalty can make the total zero or negative, and the page warns you when that is possible.

Why do totals with many dice bunch in the middle?

There are many more ways to make a middle total than an extreme one. With 10 d4, a total of 10 needs every die to show 1, while totals near 25 can be made thousands of ways.
