Pick girl, boy, unisex or any, type the first letters you like and set a maximum length; the finder draws matching names at random and shows each one's origin and meaning. Typing "Olivia" returns a single entry: Latin, meaning olive tree. Asking for girls' names starting with Z returns Zoe and Zara.

About this tool

Shortlisting baby names usually starts with a few wishes: a sound you like at the start, a name that is not too long next to the surname, or a name that works for either a boy or a girl. This finder applies those filters to a built-in list of 104 names from Hebrew, Arabic, Latin, Greek, Germanic, Norse, Irish, Sanskrit and other roots, then picks up to 20 at random so each run gives a fresh shortlist. Every suggestion comes with its origin and a short meaning taken from standard etymologies. The list is curated rather than exhaustive, so rare spellings, regional variants and popularity rankings are not included.

How to use it

  1. Choose who the name is for

Select Any, Girl, Boy or Unisex. Unisex names such as Riley and Noor appear only under Unisex or Any.

  2. Type the first letters

Enter one letter or several, like El or Ma. Leave it empty to include every start.

  3. Set length and count

Use the steppers to cap the letters per name and choose how many suggestions to draw, from 1 to 20.

  4. Read the shortlist

The first pick is shown with its meaning and origin; the table lists every drawn name. Change any filter for a new draw.

How it is calculated

shortlist = random sample of k names from { names matching gender, first letters and length ≤ L }

k
how many names you asked for, capped at the number of matches
L
the maximum number of letters per name

Each name in the list carries a usual gender, an origin language and a short meaning. The finder keeps names whose gender matches your choice, whose spelling begins with your letters (ignoring case) and whose length is within your limit. It shuffles the matches and keeps the first k, so every matching name has the same chance of appearing.

When not to use it

  • For popularity rankings in a given year, use national birth-registration statistics instead.
  • For names from a specific culture not covered here, a dedicated naming dictionary will have far more choices.

Common mistakes

  • Setting the maximum length too low together with several first letters, which leaves no matches.
  • Treating the gender label as a rule; many names are used for both sexes in some countries.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the meanings come from?

They summarise widely cited etymologies, such as those on Behind the Name. Meanings of old names are often debated, so a name like Mariam is shown as bitter or beloved where scholars disagree.

Why do I get fewer names than I asked for?

Only names that pass all filters can be drawn. If three names match and you ask for five, you get three and a note saying so.

Can I search for a name inside another name?

No. The letters you type must match the start of the name, so typing el finds Elena and Ella but not Daniel.

Does each draw give different names?

Yes. Matching names are shuffled each time the inputs change, so changing the count or toggling the gender back gives a new order and often different picks.

Which origins are in the list?

Hebrew, Arabic, Latin, Greek, Germanic, English, Irish, Norse, French, Sanskrit, Persian, Welsh, Celtic, Dutch and Hawaiian roots are represented, each tagged on its name.

How are unisex names chosen?

Names such as Avery, Quinn, Rowan and Eden are tagged unisex because they are commonly given to both boys and girls in English-speaking countries today.
