This fast IQ-style test has eight puzzles: three number series, a word analogy, two odd-one-out items, a syllogism and the bat-and-ball problem. Each right answer scores one point. Getting five right gives 62.5%. It is a quick brain teaser, not a standardised IQ measurement, so treat the score as a bit of fun.

About this tool

People search for a fast IQ test when they want a five-minute brain workout rather than an hour-long assessment. This page gives you eight fixed puzzles of the kinds that appear in reasoning tests: number sequences, verbal analogy, classification and simple logic, plus the bat-and-ball question from Shane Frederick's Cognitive Reflection Test, which most people first answer wrongly. Pick an answer for each item and the score updates straight away, with a table showing your answer, the correct one and the item type, so you can see whether series or logic tripped you up. The limit is real: eight items cannot estimate an IQ. Proper IQ scores come from normed tests given by a psychologist, scaled to a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. Use this for practice and conversation, not for any decision.

How to use it

  1. Read each puzzle

Eight questions sit in the form, each with three answer buttons and a Skip button.

  2. Pick your answers

Choose one button per question. Leave Skip selected on any item you do not want to try; it counts as wrong.

  3. Check the score

The headline shows correct answers out of eight, with the percentage and a result band beneath.

  4. Review the table

The table lists every item, your answer, the correct answer and a Correct, Wrong or Skipped mark.

Examples

The classic 10-cent slip

8. A bat and a ball cost $1.10 together. The bat costs $1.00 more than the ball. How many cents is the ball?

Result Correct answers (out of 8): 0
Questions answered: 1

Answering only the bat-and-ball item with 10 cents scores zero: if the ball were 10 cents the bat would be $1.10 and the total $1.20.

Result Correct answers (out of 8): 5
Questions answered: 8
Score: 62.5%
Result band: Solid

  1. Correct answers: 5 of 8
  2. Score share = 5 ÷ 8 × 100 = 62.5%

Five right and three wrong is 62.5%, with the growing-gaps series, the syllogism and the bat-and-ball item missed.

When not to use it

  • Do not use it as evidence of intelligence for school, job or clinical purposes.
  • Skip it if you need a normed score with a percentile; only a validated test gives that.
  • Do not compare scores between people who saw the answer table first.

Common mistakes

  • Answering 10 cents for the ball without checking that the total would then be $1.20.
  • Treating 2 as the odd one out because it is even, when 9 is the only number that is not prime.
  • Reading the 3, 6, 11, 18, 27 series as adding a fixed amount instead of growing odd gaps.
  • Reading the score as an IQ number.

Frequently asked questions

Can eight puzzles really measure IQ?

No. A real IQ score compares your performance with a large norming sample across many subtests, which is how scores are set to average 100 with a spread of 15. Eight items give a rough sense of how you handle a few puzzle types, nothing more.

Why is the ball 5 cents and not 10?

If the ball is x, the bat is x + 1.00, so 2x + 1.00 = 1.10 and x = 0.05. With a 10-cent ball the bat would cost $1.10 and the pair $1.20. Frederick reported that many university students gave the 10-cent answer.

How does the 3, 6, 11, 18, 27 series work?

The gaps between terms are 3, 5, 7 and 9, rising by two each time. The next gap is 11, so 27 + 11 = 38.

Why is 9 the odd number out?

2, 3, 5 and 11 are prime numbers, divisible only by one and themselves. 9 equals 3 × 3, so it is the only composite number in the set.

What do the result bands mean?

Seven or eight correct is Sharp, five or six is Solid, three or four is Warming up, and fewer is Try again slowly. They are informal labels for this quiz and carry no clinical meaning.

Do skipped questions lower my score?

Yes. The score is correct answers out of eight, so a skipped item counts the same as a wrong one. A note appears listing how many you left unanswered.
