This EQ test asks ten statements, two for each of five areas: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills. Half are reverse-scored. Your points (10 to 50) are rescaled to 0–100, so 35 raw points becomes (35 − 10) ÷ 40 × 100 ≈ 63, a Moderate result.

About this tool

Emotional intelligence describes how well you notice, manage and use emotions, your own and other people's. This short self-check follows the five-area model popularised by Daniel Goleman and gives each area two statements, one worded positively and one worded the other way round so that agreeing with everything does not inflate the score. You get an overall score out of 100, a level, the raw points, a table and a bar chart per area, and the arithmetic behind the number. It is meant for curiosity, team-building sessions or a starting point for reflection. It is not a validated psychometric instrument like the MSCEIT or EQ-i 2.0, and ten self-rated items cannot measure ability; treat the result as a snapshot of how you see yourself today.

How to use it

  1. Answer each statement

Pick 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree) for all ten statements, grouped by area.

  2. Answer for a typical week

Think about how you usually behave, not your best or worst day.

  3. Read the overall score

The score and level update as you answer; the raw points show where you sit between 10 and 50.

  4. Compare the areas

The table and bar chart show each area from 0 to 100, with your strongest one and the one to work on named.

Examples

Top answer on every item

I can name what I am feeling while it is happening.
5 Strongly agree
My mood often shifts and I only notice the reason much later.
1 Strongly disagree
When I am angry I can pause before I reply.
5 Strongly agree
Stress makes me say things I regret.
1 Strongly disagree
I keep working toward a goal after a setback.
5 Strongly agree
I lose interest quickly once a task gets hard.
1 Strongly disagree
I can tell when a friend is upset even if they say nothing.
5 Strongly agree
Other people's problems rarely hold my attention.
1 Strongly disagree
I can settle a disagreement so both sides feel heard.
5 Strongly agree
Meeting new people leaves me unsure what to say.
1 Strongly disagree

Result EQ score (0–100): 100
Overall level: Strong
Raw points (10–50): 50
Strongest domain: Self-awareness
Domain to work on: Self-awareness

  1. Reverse-scored items (2, 4, 6, 8, 10): points = 6 − answer.
  2. Raw total = 50 out of 50 (minimum 10).
  3. Score = (50 − 10) ÷ 40 × 100 = 100.
  4. Each domain = (its two items − 2) ÷ 8 × 100.

Strongly agreeing with the five positive statements and strongly disagreeing with the five reversed ones gives the full 50 points.

A driven but less attuned profile

I can name what I am feeling while it is happening.
4 Agree
My mood often shifts and I only notice the reason much later.
2 Disagree
When I am angry I can pause before I reply.
3 Neutral
Stress makes me say things I regret.
3 Neutral
I keep working toward a goal after a setback.
5 Strongly agree
I lose interest quickly once a task gets hard.
1 Strongly disagree
I can tell when a friend is upset even if they say nothing.
2 Disagree
Other people's problems rarely hold my attention.
4 Agree
I can settle a disagreement so both sides feel heard.
4 Agree
Meeting new people leaves me unsure what to say.
3 Neutral

Result EQ score (0–100): 63
Overall level: Moderate
Raw points (10–50): 35
Strongest domain: Motivation
Domain to work on: Empathy

  1. Reverse-scored items (2, 4, 6, 8, 10): points = 6 − answer.
  2. Raw total = 35 out of 50 (minimum 10).
  3. Score = (35 − 10) ÷ 40 × 100 = 63.
  4. Each domain = (its two items − 2) ÷ 8 × 100.

Motivation scores 100 while empathy sits at 25, so the overall 63 hides a wide spread between domains.

How it is calculated

Score = (raw − 10) ÷ 40 × 100, where raw = sum of positive items + sum of (6 − answer) for reversed items

raw
Total points over ten items, from 10 to 50
6 − answer
Reverse scoring for statements 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10
Area score
(two-item points − 2) ÷ 8 × 100

This is a summated rating scale in the Likert tradition. Each answer is worth 1 to 5 points; for the negatively worded statements the points are flipped, so a 1 counts as 5. The total is moved onto a 0–100 range by subtracting the minimum and dividing by the span. Below 40 is labelled Developing, 40 to 69 Moderate, and 70 or more Strong. These cut-offs are simple thirds of the range, not population norms.

When not to use it

  • Hiring, promotion or any decision about a person, since the items are not validated.
  • Screening for a mental-health condition, which needs a clinician.
  • Comparing yourself with published EQ-i or MSCEIT norms, which use different scales.

Common mistakes

  • Answering how you would like to behave instead of how you usually do.
  • Picking 3 on everything, which always lands on exactly 50.
  • Missing that half the statements are worded negatively, so agreeing with them lowers the score.

Frequently asked questions

Why are some statements worded negatively?

Reversed items catch acquiescence, the habit of agreeing with whatever is asked. If you agreed with every statement, the positive and negative halves cancel out and you land near the middle rather than at the top.

What do the five areas mean?

Self-awareness is recognising your own feelings, self-regulation is controlling how you act on them, motivation is persistence toward goals, empathy is reading other people's feelings, and social skills is handling relationships and conflict. The grouping follows Daniel Goleman's 1995 model.

Is a score of 63 good?

On this scale 63 is in the Moderate band, just under the 70 cut-off for Strong. Because the bands are thirds of the range rather than norms from a tested population, the number says more about how your answers spread across areas than how you rank against others.

How is this different from a professional EQ assessment?

Instruments such as the EQ-i 2.0 use over 100 items, norms from thousands of respondents and reliability checks. The MSCEIT tests ability with right and wrong answers. Ten self-report items give a quick reflection, not a measurement with known error.

Can emotional intelligence improve?

Research on training programmes suggests skills such as naming emotions and pausing before reacting can be practised. Retaking this check after a few months of deliberate practice in your weakest area shows whether your self-rating has moved.

Why does my result say Developing in one area but Moderate overall?

The overall score averages all ten items, so one low area can be offset by high ones. That is why the table lists each area separately and names the one with the lowest score as the area to work on.
