Running pace is your finish time divided by the distance covered. A marathon of 42.195 km run in 3:00:00 is 10,800 seconds ÷ 42.195 km = 256 seconds, or 4:16 per kilometre, which is 6:52 per mile and an average speed of 14.07 km/h. Enter any distance and time to get the same four figures.

About this tool

Runners set training and race targets in pace, but race results arrive as a total time over a distance. This calculator turns one into the other: type the distance in kilometres or miles and the hours, minutes and seconds it took, and it returns the average pace per kilometre and per mile, plus speed in km/h and mph. Coaches use it to check whether a goal time is realistic, and treadmill users use the speed figure to set the belt. The working is shown line by line so you can see where each number comes from. It gives an average only: hills, wind, aid stations and a fading second half mean your split for any single kilometre can sit well away from that average, and GPS watches often record a slightly longer course than the certified distance.

How to use it

  1. Enter the distance

Type the distance run, for example 5, 10, 21.0975 or 42.195.

  2. Pick kilometres or miles

The unit buttons set how the distance is read and which pace becomes the headline.

  3. Enter the finish time

Use the hours stepper and the minutes and seconds boxes. Hours can stay at 0 for short runs.

  4. Read pace and speed

The result shows pace per kilometre and per mile, both speeds, and the working behind them.

Result Average pace: 4:16 /km
Pace per kilometre: 4:16 /km
Pace per mile: 6:52 /mi
Speed (km/h): 14.07
Speed (mph): 8.74

  1. Time = 3 h × 3600 + 0 min × 60 + 0 s = 10800 s
  2. Distance = 42.195 km = 26.219 mi
  3. Pace per km = 10800 ÷ 42.195 = 256 s = 4:16
  4. Pace per mile = 10800 ÷ 26.219 = 411.9 s = 6:52
  5. Speed = 42.195 km ÷ 3 h = 14.07 km/h

A sub-three marathon needs an even 4:16 per kilometre, or 6:52 per mile, held for all 42.195 km.

Result Average pace: 5:00 /km
Pace per kilometre: 5:00 /km
Pace per mile: 8:03 /mi
Speed (km/h): 12
Speed (mph): 7.46

  1. Time = 0 h × 3600 + 25 min × 60 + 0 s = 1500 s
  2. Distance = 5 km = 3.107 mi
  3. Pace per km = 1500 ÷ 5 = 300 s = 5:00
  4. Pace per mile = 1500 ÷ 3.107 = 482.8 s = 8:03
  5. Speed = 5 km ÷ 0.4167 h = 12 km/h

1,500 seconds over 5 km is exactly 5:00 per kilometre; one mile at that pace takes 482.8 s, shown as 8:03.

Result Average pace: 8:00 /mi
Pace per kilometre: 4:58 /km
Pace per mile: 8:00 /mi
Speed (km/h): 12.07
Speed (mph): 7.5

  1. Time = 0 h × 3600 + 8 min × 60 + 0 s = 480 s
  2. Distance = 1.609 km = 1 mi
  3. Pace per km = 480 ÷ 1.609 = 298.3 s = 4:58
  4. Pace per mile = 480 ÷ 1 = 480 s = 8:00
  5. Speed = 1.609 km ÷ 0.1333 h = 12.07 km/h

With miles selected the headline pace is per mile; the same effort is 4:58 per kilometre and 7.5 mph.

How it is calculated

pace = total seconds ÷ distance; speed = distance ÷ (total seconds ÷ 3600)

total seconds
hours × 3600 + minutes × 60 + seconds
distance
distance in km, or in miles for pace per mile (1 mi = 1.609344 km)
pace
seconds per unit of distance, shown as minutes:seconds

The finish time is converted to seconds and divided by the distance to give seconds per kilometre or per mile, then shown as minutes and seconds rounded to the nearest whole second. Miles convert with the exact international definition of 1.609344 km. Speed is the inverse: distance divided by time in hours.

When not to use it

  • Do not use it to plan individual splits on a hilly course; it gives one flat average.
  • It does not predict a race time at a new distance from a shorter effort.
  • It is not a heart-rate or effort zone calculator.

Common mistakes

  • Typing a half marathon as 21 km instead of 21.0975 km shifts the pace by a few seconds.
  • Entering 90 minutes in the minutes box instead of 1 hour and 30 minutes.
  • Leaving the unit on kilometres after entering a distance measured in miles.
  • Comparing GPS watch pace with this figure when the watch measured extra distance.

Frequently asked questions

What pace do I need for a sub-2-hour half marathon?

A half marathon is 21.0975 km. Two hours is 7,200 seconds, so 7,200 ÷ 21.0975 = 341.3 seconds, or about 5:41 per kilometre and 9:09 per mile. Run slightly faster than that to allow for weaving around other runners.

How do I convert pace per kilometre to pace per mile?

Multiply the seconds per kilometre by 1.609344. A 5:00 per km pace is 300 seconds, and 300 × 1.609344 = 482.8 seconds, which is 8:03 per mile. The calculator shows both at once.

How is pace different from speed?

Pace is time per unit of distance, such as 5:00 per km, and is what runners usually train by. Speed is distance per unit of time, such as 12 km/h, and is what treadmills display. They are reciprocals: 60 divided by the pace in minutes gives the speed.

Why does my watch show a different average pace?

GPS tracks wander on bends and between buildings, so watches often log 1–2% more distance than a measured course. Dividing your time by that longer distance gives a quicker pace than the official distance does.

What is a typical pace for a recreational 5K?

Many recreational runners finish 5 km in 25 to 35 minutes, which is 5:00 to 7:00 per kilometre, or roughly 8:03 to 11:16 per mile. Your own figure depends on age, training and the course.

Can I use it for walking or cycling?

Yes. The arithmetic is the same for any steady movement over a distance. Cyclists usually read the km/h or mph speed rather than the pace figures.
