Pokemon EV Calculator

Stat

The species value, e.g. 130 for Garchomp's Attack.

0 to 252 per stat, 510 across all six.

A stat is floor((2 x Base + IV + floor(EV/4)) x Level/100), plus Level + 10 for HP or plus 5 then times the nature for other stats. A level 50 Adamant Garchomp with base 130 Attack, 31 IV and 252 EVs reaches 200 Attack; with no EVs it would have 165.

About this tool

Trainers planning an EV spread need to know what each block of effort values actually buys. Every 4 EVs add at most one point before level scaling, so at level 50 it takes about 8 EVs per point, and some EVs land between breakpoints and do nothing. Enter a base stat, IV, EVs, level and, for non-HP stats, the nature effect, and the calculator returns the final stat, the value with zero EVs, the maximum possible, the fewest EVs that give the same number and how many more you would need for the next point. It uses the formula from Generation III onward, so it does not cover the older stat-experience system of Red, Blue, Gold and Silver, and it ignores in-battle stat stages, items and abilities.

How to use it

  1. Pick HP or another stat

HP uses its own formula and no nature; the other five share one formula with the nature multiplier.

  2. Enter base stat and level

Use the species base value and the level you will battle at, often 50 for VGC or 100 for singles.

  3. Set IV and EVs

Drag the IV slider from 0 to 31 and type the EVs invested in this stat, up to 252.

  4. Read the breakpoints

Check the fewest EVs for the same stat and the extra EVs for one more point to trim waste from your spread.

Examples

Level 78 Garchomp HP

Stat
HP
Base stat
108
IV
24
EVs in this stat
74
Level
78

Result Final stat: 289
Same stat with 0 EVs: 275
Points added by EVs: 14
Maximum (31 IV, 252 EV): 329
Fewest EVs for this stat: 72
Extra EVs for +1 point: 2
Nature multiplier: neutral (x1.0)

  1. Inner value = 2 x 108 + 24 + floor(74 / 4) = 258
  2. Scaled to level 78: floor(258 x 78 / 100) = 201
  3. HP = 201 + 78 + 10 = 289

The textbook example from the stat formula article. Only 72 of the 74 EVs actually matter here.

  3. Stat = floor((188 + 5) x 1) = 193

Defense from the same worked example, with no nature change applied.

Nature multiplier: boosting (x1.1)

  1. Inner value = 2 x 130 + 31 + floor(252 / 4) = 354
  2. Scaled to level 50: floor(354 x 50 / 100) = 177
  3. Stat = floor((177 + 5) x 1.1) = 200

The usual competitive spread: 31 IV, 252 EVs and a boosting nature on base 130 Attack.

How it is calculated

HP = floor((2B + I + floor(E/4)) x L/100) + L + 10; Other = floor((floor((2B + I + floor(E/4)) x L/100) + 5) x N)

B
base stat of the species
I
individual value, 0 to 31
E
effort values in the stat, 0 to 252
L
level, 1 to 100
N
nature: 1.1 boosting, 1.0 neutral, 0.9 hindering

Each floor truncates toward zero, which is why EVs come in useful steps rather than smoothly. The tool searches every EV value from 0 to 252 to find the smallest amount that still reaches your stat and the next amount that raises it. Shedinja, with base HP 1, always has 1 HP.

When not to use it

  • Do not use it for Generation I or II games, which use stat experience instead of EVs.
  • It does not model battle modifiers such as stat stages, Choice items or abilities.
  • Legends: Arceus uses effort levels, not EVs, so its numbers differ.

Common mistakes

  • Putting 255 EVs in a stat when 252 already gives the same result.
  • Applying the nature multiplier to HP, which no nature affects.
  • Forgetting that the 510 EV total limits a 252/252 spread to 6 spare EVs.

Frequently asked questions

Why do 252 EVs end in a multiple of 4?

The formula divides EVs by 4 and drops the remainder, so 252 gives 63 points while 253 to 255 still give 63. Since Generation VI the per-stat cap was set to 252 to stop that waste.

How many EVs does one stat point take at level 50?

Roughly 8. At level 50 the inner value is halved, so you need two extra quarter-points, which is 8 EVs, for one point on the final stat. The first point can come after just 4 EVs if the IV leaves an odd total, which is why many spreads use 4 leftover EVs.

What does a boosting nature do to the number?

It multiplies the stat by 1.1 after level scaling and the +5, then drops decimals. A neutral 182 becomes 200 with a boosting nature and 163 with a hindering one.

Why is HP calculated differently?

HP adds the level plus 10 instead of a flat 5, and no nature changes it. That makes HP noticeably larger than other stats with the same base value.

Does this match the stats shown in Scarlet and Violet?

Yes. Scarlet and Violet, Sword and Shield and every main game since Ruby and Sapphire use the same formula, so the result should equal the summary screen when you enter the correct EVs and IVs.

What do the spare EV warnings mean?

When fewer EVs would give the same final stat, the extra ones are wasted. The warning tells you how many you can move to another stat without losing a point here.
