Basketball plus-minus is the points your team scored minus the points the opponent scored while a given player was on the court. If the team scored 100 and allowed 92 during his 30 minutes, his plus-minus is +8; at that rate over a full 48 minutes it would be +12.8.

About this tool

Coaches, scouts and stat-keepers for school, club and rec leagues rarely get plus-minus printed for them, but it is easy to track from a running score sheet: note the score each time a player checks in and out, add up the points for and against, and enter the totals here. The calculator returns the raw figure in box-score style, the average per game, and the rate per 36 and per 48 minutes so a bench player can be compared with a starter. It also shows each step of the arithmetic. One limit to keep in mind: raw plus-minus credits or blames a player for everything the other nine people on the floor did, so a role player on a strong lineup can post a big number without driving it.

How to use it

  1. Enter points for

Type the points your team scored while the player was on the court, summed over every stint.

  2. Enter points against

Type the points the opponent scored over the same stints.

  3. Add minutes and games

Give the total minutes played and use the − / + buttons to set how many games the totals cover.

  4. Read the rates

Compare per-36 and per-48 figures across players with different playing time.

Examples

One game, 30 minutes, +8

Team points while on court
100
Opponent points while on court
92
Minutes on court
30
Games
1

Result Plus-minus: 8
Box-score display: +8
Plus-minus per game: 8
Per 36 minutes: 9.6
Per 48 minutes: 12.8
Reading: Team outscored opponents with this player on court

  1. Plus-minus = 100 − 92 = +8
  2. Per game = 8 ÷ 1 = 8
  3. Per 36 minutes = 8 ÷ 30 × 36 = 9.6
  4. Per 48 minutes = 8 ÷ 30 × 48 = 12.8

The team won the player's 30 minutes 100–92. Stretched to a full 48 minutes at the same rate, that is +12.8.

Two games, 60 minutes, −20

Team points while on court
210
Opponent points while on court
230
Minutes on court
60
Games
2

Result Plus-minus: -20
Box-score display: -20
Plus-minus per game: -10
Per 36 minutes: -12
Per 48 minutes: -16
Reading: Team was outscored with this player on court

  1. Plus-minus = 210 − 230 = -20
  2. Per game = -20 ÷ 2 = -10
  3. Per 36 minutes = -20 ÷ 60 × 36 = -12
  4. Per 48 minutes = -20 ÷ 60 × 48 = -16

Over two games the team lost the player's minutes by 20 points, an average of −10 a game and −16 per 48 minutes.

How it is calculated

PM = Pts_for − Pts_against; PM per 48 = PM ÷ MIN × 48; PM per game = PM ÷ G

Pts_for
team points scored while the player was on court
Pts_against
opponent points scored while the player was on court
MIN
total minutes on court
G
games covered by the totals

Plus-minus is a pure on-court point differential, the same figure the NBA prints in its box scores. Because it grows with playing time, it is normalised by dividing by minutes and multiplying by 36 or 48 (a regulation NBA game is 48 minutes; many other levels play 32 or 40). Per-game averages divide by games instead. No adjustment is made for teammates or opponents, which is what adjusted and real plus-minus models attempt.

When not to use it

  • Do not judge a player on one game of plus-minus; single-game swings are mostly noise.
  • Do not use it as a standalone measure of individual defence or scoring.
  • Skip it when you lack the score at every substitution, since estimates distort the total.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the final game score instead of only the points during the player's stints.
  • Comparing raw totals between a 35-minute starter and a 10-minute reserve.
  • Forgetting free throws awarded after a substitution, which count for the lineup on court at the foul.
  • Using game minutes from a 32-minute league and reading per-48 as a per-game figure.

Frequently asked questions

How is plus-minus tracked during a game?

Record the score whenever the player enters and leaves. For each stint, subtract the score at check-in from the score at check-out for both teams, then add the stints together. The totals for and against are the two numbers this calculator needs.

Why compare per 36 or per 48 minutes?

Raw plus-minus scales with playing time. A reserve who is +6 in 12 minutes is +24 per 48, a faster rate than a starter who is +15 in 40 minutes (+18 per 48). Rates put both on the same footing, though small samples remain unreliable.

What counts as a good plus-minus?

Any positive number means the team outscored opponents while the player was on court. Over a full NBA season, the best rotation players often finish several hundred points positive, while players on losing teams commonly post negative totals even when they play well.

How is this different from adjusted plus-minus?

Adjusted plus-minus uses regression across thousands of lineups to separate a player's effect from teammates and opponents. Raw plus-minus, which this tool computes, does none of that; it is simply the on-court score difference.

Who gets credit for free throws after a substitution?

Under the usual scorekeeping convention, free throws belong to the five players on the floor when the foul occurred, even if substitutions are made before the shots are taken.

Can a player have a positive plus-minus in a loss?

Yes. If the team won his minutes 40–35 but lost the remaining minutes by ten, he finishes +5 in a five-point defeat. That often points to a lineup problem rather than his own play.
