About this tool

Building plans, sports results and product listings from most of the world give lengths in meters, while US contractors, real-estate listings and aviation altitudes use feet. This converter turns a meter value into feet as you type and shows the arithmetic, so you can check a ceiling height, a room dimension or a running distance without reaching for a calculator. It uses the international foot, fixed in 1959 at exactly 0.3048 m. Results are decimal feet, so a height such as 5.91 ft still needs the decimal part multiplied by 12 to read as feet and inches. Use the swap control to go from feet back to meters.

How to use it

  1. Enter the length in meters

Type the value into the meters field. Decimals work, for example 2.45 for a door height.

  2. Read the result in feet

The feet value updates while you type, along with the calculation behind it.

  3. Swap or share

Use Swap to convert feet to meters instead, or Share to send a link that reopens the same value.

Examples

One meter

Meters
1

Result Feet: 3.2808

  1. 1 m × 3.2808 = 3.2808 ft

A single meter is a little over three and a quarter feet, which is why a meter stick looks slightly longer than a yardstick.

A 100 m sprint track

Meters
100

Result Feet: 328.084

  1. 100 m × 3.2808 = 328.084 ft

The Olympic sprint straight is 100 meters, about 328 feet, or just over the length of an American football field including both end zones.

A height of 1.8 m

Meters
1.8

Result Feet: 5.9055

  1. 1.8 m × 3.2808 = 5.9055 ft

1.8 meters is about 5.91 feet, which is roughly 5 ft 10.9 in when the decimal part is multiplied by 12.

How it is calculated

ft = m ÷ 0.3048 ≈ m × 3.28084

m
length in meters
ft
length in international feet

The 1959 international yard and pound agreement defined the foot as exactly 0.3048 meters. Dividing one meter by 0.3048 gives 3.280839895 feet, usually written as 3.28084. Both scales start at zero length, so the conversion is a single division with no offset.

When not to use it

  • Old US land surveys may use the US survey foot, which is about 2 parts per million longer than the international foot.
  • If you need feet and inches together, convert the decimal part separately by multiplying it by 12.

Common mistakes

  • Multiplying by 3 instead of 3.28084 understates the result by almost 9 percent.
  • Reading 5.9 ft as 5 ft 9 in, when it is actually about 5 ft 10.8 in.

Frequently asked questions

How many feet are in 1 meter?

One meter is 3.28084 feet. The exact value is 1 divided by 0.3048, which is 3.280839895 and continues without repeating neatly.

How do I turn decimal feet into feet and inches?

Keep the whole number as feet and multiply the decimal part by 12 for inches. For 1.75 m the converter shows 5.74147 ft, so 0.74147 × 12 gives about 8.9 inches, or 5 ft 8.9 in.

Why is the foot exactly 0.3048 meters?

In 1959 the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa agreed on a common international yard of 0.9144 m. A foot is one third of that yard, which makes it exactly 0.3048 m.

What is the US survey foot?

It is an older definition of 1200/3937 meters, about 0.3048006 m, used for some US land surveys. NIST retired it at the end of 2022, and the difference is about 2 millimeters per kilometer.

How tall is 2 meters in feet?

Two meters is 6.56168 feet, which works out to about 6 ft 6.7 in. It is a common height for interior doorways in some countries.
