Minutes in a full day
- Minutes
- 1440
Result Hours: 24

A day holds 1,440 minutes; dividing by 60 gives exactly 24 hours.
To convert minutes to hours, divide the minutes by 60, because one hour is exactly 60 minutes. For example, 150 minutes ÷ 60 = 2.5 hours, which is 2 hours 30 minutes on a clock. The result here is in decimal hours, the form payroll and invoicing software expects.

Payroll staff, freelancers filling in timesheets, students tallying study time and anyone planning a long drive regularly need minute totals expressed as hours. This converter divides the minutes you type by 60 and shows the answer as decimal hours, along with the division it used. Decimal hours are what billing and payroll systems multiply by an hourly wage: 20 minutes becomes 0.3333 hours, not 0.20. The one limit to keep in mind is that the result is decimal, not clock notation, so 1.25 hours means one hour and fifteen minutes rather than one hour and twenty-five minutes. Use the swap button to turn hours back into minutes.

minuteshoursThe SI brochure and NIST SP 811 define the minute as 60 seconds and the hour as 3,600 seconds, so one hour contains exactly 60 minutes. Dividing by 60 is therefore exact, with no approximation. To turn the decimal part back into clock minutes, multiply it by 60: 2.4 hours is 2 hours plus 0.4 × 60 = 24 minutes.
Keep the whole number as hours and multiply the decimal part by 60. For 3.6 hours, 0.6 × 60 = 36, so the duration is 3 hours 36 minutes.
100 minutes ÷ 60 = 1.6667 hours, which is 1 hour and 40 minutes. Exam papers and lectures of 100 minutes are common, so this one comes up often.
Twenty minutes is one third of an hour, and one third has no finite decimal form. Payroll software usually keeps two to four decimal places, so check which your employer uses before multiplying by a wage.
Multiply 37.5 by 60 to get 2,250 minutes. Use the swap direction of this converter to go from hours to minutes in the same way.
Yes. Leap seconds and daylight saving shifts change the length of particular days, but the hour as a unit is defined as exactly 3,600 seconds, which is 60 minutes.
