An NFT rarity score adds up, for every trait the item has, the collection size divided by the number of items sharing that trait. In a 10,000-item collection, traits held by 100, 500 and 2,000 items score 100 + 20 + 5 = 125. Higher totals mean rarer combinations of traits.

About this tool

Collectors comparing listings, and creators checking how their trait distribution will rank, need a number that turns trait counts into one comparable figure. Enter the collection's supply and, for each trait the NFT carries, how many items in the collection share it. The tool returns the summed rarity score, each trait's frequency and contribution, the rarest trait, and the statistical odds of the full combination as 1 in N. A bar chart shows which traits carry the score. The figure is a ranking aid only: marketplaces weight traits differently, some count missing traits or trait counts as traits themselves, and rarity does not set a sale price.

How to use it

  1. Enter the supply

Type the total number of items in the collection, as shown on the marketplace or collection page.

  2. List each trait

Add one row per trait with its name and the number of items that share that exact value.

  3. Read the breakdown

Check the table and bar chart to see which trait drives the score, then compare the total against other items scored the same way.

Examples

10,000 items, three traits

Items in the collection
10000
Traits of this NFT
Laser eyes × 100; Gold fur × 500; Cap × 2000

Result Rarity score: 125
Rarest trait: Laser eyes
Traits counted: 3
Statistical rarity (1 in …): 10,000

  1. Laser eyes: 10,000 ÷ 100 = 100
  2. Gold fur: 10,000 ÷ 500 = 20
  3. Cap: 10,000 ÷ 2,000 = 5
  4. Rarity score = sum of trait scores = 125
  5. Statistical rarity = product of trait frequencies = 1 in 10,000

The one-in-a-hundred laser eyes supply 100 of the 125 points, so a single scarce trait dominates the score.

3,333 items, two common traits

Items in the collection
3333
Traits of this NFT
Red background × 333; Sword × 1111

Result Rarity score: 13.01
Rarest trait: Red background
Traits counted: 2
Statistical rarity (1 in …): 30

  1. Red background: 3,333 ÷ 333 = 10.01
  2. Sword: 3,333 ÷ 1,111 = 3
  3. Rarity score = sum of trait scores = 13.01
  4. Statistical rarity = product of trait frequencies = 1 in 30

3333 ÷ 333 = 10.01 and 3333 ÷ 1111 = 3, so two ordinary traits add up to a modest 13.01.

How it is calculated

Rarity score = Σ (N ÷ cᵢ); statistical rarity = 1 ÷ Π (cᵢ ÷ N)

N
Number of items in the collection
cᵢ
Number of items that share trait i

Each trait scores the inverse of its frequency, so a trait on 1% of items is worth 100 points and one on 20% is worth 5. Summing rewards a single very scarce trait heavily, which is why this method became the common ranking on rarity sites. Statistical rarity instead multiplies the frequencies, treating traits as independent, and gives the odds of drawing that exact combination.

When not to use it

  • Do not use it to compare items scored by a marketplace that applies its own trait weighting.
  • It cannot estimate a sale price; demand and liquidity set that, not scarcity.
  • Skip it when trait counts are unknown, such as before a collection is revealed.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the trait's share as a percent instead of the number of items with it.
  • Using circulating supply for one item and total supply for another.
  • Leaving out common traits, which makes cross-item comparisons uneven.
  • Counting a trait category such as Background instead of the specific value such as Gold.

Frequently asked questions

Why does one rare trait outweigh several common ones?

Scores grow as the inverse of frequency. A trait on 10 of 10,000 items scores 1,000, while five traits each on 20% of items score 5 apiece, 25 in total. The sum is dominated by the scarcest trait.

How is statistical rarity different from the rarity score?

Statistical rarity multiplies the frequencies of all traits, giving the chance that a random item has exactly this combination, shown here as 1 in N. It assumes traits are independent, which generative collections often are not, and it penalises common traits more strongly than the summed score does.

Should a missing trait count as a trait?

Some ranking sites treat 'no hat' as a trait value with its own count. If the collection does that, add a row for it with the number of items that lack the trait. Keep the choice the same for every item you compare.

Where do I find how many items share a trait?

Most marketplaces list trait counts or percentages on the item page or in the collection filters. Convert a percentage to a count by multiplying it by the supply: 2.5% of 10,000 is 250 items.

Does a higher rarity score mean a higher price?

Not necessarily. Rarity is one input buyers consider, alongside the collection's demand, trading volume and the look of specific traits. NFT prices are volatile, and scarce items can still fail to sell.

Why does my result differ from a rarity website?

Sites may add a bonus for the number of traits, normalise categories with many values, or exclude burned items from the supply. This tool applies the plain sum of supply divided by trait count, so differences usually come from one of those adjustments.
