NFT gas cost is gas used times the base fee plus tip, converted from gwei to ETH. A mint using about 150,000 gas at 20 gwei base and a 2 gwei tip costs 150,000 x 22 = 3,300,000 gwei, or 0.0033 ETH, which is $9.90 with ETH at $3,000.

About this tool

Collectors planning a mint, moving pieces between wallets or listing on a marketplace pay gas on Ethereum for each transaction, and that cost can rival a cheap mint price. This calculator takes the action you are about to sign, the number of transactions, the current base fee and tip, and the ETH price, then reports gas in ETH and dollars. For mints it adds the mint price so you see the full outlay and what fraction of it goes to the network. The preset gas figures are typical values for standard ERC-721 contracts; a busy drop with extra logic can use far more, so for an exact figure pick Custom gas and type the estimate from your wallet confirmation screen. Layer-2 networks charge an extra data fee this tool does not model.

How to use it

  1. Pick the NFT action

Choose Mint, Transfer or Approve for sale to use a typical gas amount, or Custom gas to enter your wallet's own estimate.

  2. Set how many

Use the stepper for the number of separate transactions, such as three single mints.

  3. Add the mint price

For mints, enter the price per NFT in ETH so the total includes it.

  4. Enter fees and ETH price

Read the base fee and a tip from a gas tracker and type the current ETH price in dollars.

Examples

21,000 gas at 10 + 2 gwei

NFT action
Custom gas
Gas used per transaction
21000
Number of transactions
1
Base fee
10
Priority fee (tip)
2
ETH price
2000

Result Total gas cost: $0.50
Total gas in ETH: 0.000252
Gas per transaction: $0.50
Mint price plus gas (ETH): 0.000252
Mint price plus gas: $0.50
Gas share of the total: 100%

  1. Gas per transaction (Custom) = 21,000 gas
  2. Price per gas = 10 + 2 = 12 gwei
  3. Fee per transaction = 21,000 x 12 gwei = 0.000252 ETH
  4. Gas for 1 transaction(s) = 0.000252 ETH x $2000 = $0.5

The ethereum.org worked case: 252,000 gwei is 0.000252 ETH, about fifty cents with ETH at $2,000.

2

0.05
Base fee
20
Priority fee (tip)
2
ETH price
3000

Result Total gas cost: $19.80
Total gas in ETH: 0.0066
Gas per transaction: $9.90
Mint price plus gas (ETH): 0.1066
Mint price plus gas: $319.80
Gas share of the total: 6.2%

  1. Gas per transaction (Mint) = 150,000 gas
  2. Price per gas = 20 + 2 = 22 gwei
  3. Fee per transaction = 150,000 x 22 gwei = 0.0033 ETH
  4. Gas for 2 transaction(s) = 0.0066 ETH x $3000 = $19.8
  5. Mint price 0.1 ETH + gas 0.0066 ETH = 0.1066 ETH

Each mint burns about 150,000 x 22 gwei = 0.0033 ETH in gas, so two cost 0.0066 ETH on top of 0.1 ETH in mint price.

How it is calculated

Gas cost (ETH) = n × G × (B + P) ÷ 1,000,000,000; dollars = gas cost × ETH price

n
number of transactions
G
gas used per transaction
B
base fee in gwei, burned by the protocol
P
priority fee in gwei, paid to the validator

Since the London upgrade (EIP-1559) each unit of gas costs the block base fee plus the tip you offer. One gwei is a billionth of an ether, so multiplying gas by gwei per gas and dividing by one billion gives ETH. For a mint the mint price times the count is added, and the gas share is gas divided by that combined total.

Sources

When not to use it

  • Layer-2 rollups add an L1 data fee this formula leaves out.
  • Batch mints in one transaction use less gas than the same number of single mints.
  • Failed transactions still pay gas, and this estimate assumes success.

Common mistakes

  • Treating the gas limit as the gas actually used; unused gas is refunded.
  • Entering the max fee from the wallet as the base fee.
  • Forgetting the approval transaction that a first listing on a marketplace needs.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a mint use more gas than a transfer?

A mint writes new storage: the token's owner, the holder's balance and often a counter or metadata. Writing a fresh storage slot is one of the most expensive operations in the Ethereum virtual machine, so a mint commonly lands well above the roughly 65,000 gas of a plain ERC-721 transfer.

What is the approval transaction for?

Before a marketplace can move your NFT when it sells, you grant its contract permission with setApprovalForAll. That costs gas once per collection per marketplace, around 46,000 gas, and later listings in the same collection are usually signed off-chain for nothing.

Where do I find the current base fee?

Block explorers and wallet apps show a gas tracker with the latest base fee in gwei. It changes every block, by up to 12.5 percent, depending on how full the previous block was, so a figure from an hour ago can be well off during a hyped drop.

How large a tip is enough?

On a quiet network one or two gwei usually gets a transaction into the next few blocks. In a competitive mint, bidders raise the tip to get ahead, and that can push the total price per gas many times above the base fee.

Is gas paid on a failed mint?

Yes. If a mint reverts, for example because the supply sold out while your transaction waited, the gas consumed up to that point is still charged. Only the mint price is returned, because the transfer of value never completed.

Do gas fees matter for taxes?

In the United States the IRS treats NFTs as digital assets, and fees paid to acquire or dispose of one generally adjust its cost basis or proceeds. Keep the ETH and dollar figures from each transaction for your records and check the IRS digital asset guidance.
