An NFT royalty is the sale price multiplied by the creator's royalty percentage. On a 1 ETH resale with a 5% royalty, the creator receives 0.05 ETH; if the marketplace also charges 2.5%, it takes 0.025 ETH and the seller is left with 0.925 ETH. Multiply the per-sale royalty by the number of resales to estimate a creator's total.

About this tool

Creators set a royalty when they mint a collection, and collectors pay it every time a token changes hands on a marketplace that honours it. This calculator splits one sale price three ways: the creator's royalty, the marketplace's fee and what the seller actually receives. Add a number of secondary sales to project a creator's total royalty income across a collection's trading volume. The donut chart shows the split of a single sale, and it can be downloaded as PNG, SVG or CSV. Prices are entered in whatever unit you trade in, ETH, SOL or dollars, and every result is in that same unit. One limit: gas fees are not included, and several marketplaces now make royalties optional, so the figure is what a fully honoured royalty would pay, not a confirmed receipt.

How to use it

  1. Enter the sale price

Type the price of one sale in ETH, SOL, USD or any unit; all outputs use it.

  2. Set the royalty

Drag the royalty slider or type the creator's percentage, from 0% to 25%.

  3. Set the marketplace fee

Use the fee slider for the platform's cut, for example 2.5%.

  4. Count the resales

Use the − and + buttons to project royalties across several secondary sales.

Examples

100 sale, 10% royalty, no fee

Sale price per NFT
100
Creator royalty
10
Marketplace fee
0
Number of secondary sales
1

Result Total creator royalties: 10
Royalty per sale: 10
Marketplace fee per sale: 0
Seller receives per sale: 90
Total sales volume: 100

  1. Royalty per sale = 100 × 10% = 10
  2. Marketplace fee per sale = 100 × 0% = 0
  3. Seller receives = 100 − 10 − 0 = 90
  4. Creator total over 1 sale(s) = 10 × 1 = 10

The plain EIP-2981 case: the creator receives 10 and the seller keeps 90.

1 ETH, 5% royalty, 2.5% fee

Marketplace fee
2.5
Number of secondary sales
1

Result Total creator royalties: 0.05
Royalty per sale: 0.05
Marketplace fee per sale: 0.025
Seller receives per sale: 0.925
Total sales volume: 1

  1. Royalty per sale = 1 × 5% = 0.05
  2. Marketplace fee per sale = 1 × 2.5% = 0.025
  3. Seller receives = 1 − 0.05 − 0.025 = 0.925
  4. Creator total over 1 sale(s) = 0.05 × 1 = 0.05

The creator gets 0.05 ETH, the marketplace 0.025 ETH, and the seller 0.925 ETH.

40 resales at 0.8 ETH, 7.5%

40

Result Total creator royalties: 2.4
Royalty per sale: 0.06
Marketplace fee per sale: 0.016
Seller receives per sale: 0.724
Total sales volume: 32

  1. Royalty per sale = 0.8 × 7.5% = 0.06
  2. Marketplace fee per sale = 0.8 × 2% = 0.016
  3. Seller receives = 0.8 − 0.06 − 0.016 = 0.724
  4. Creator total over 40 sale(s) = 0.06 × 40 = 2.4

Each resale pays the creator 0.06 ETH, so 40 resales total 2.4 ETH on 32 ETH of volume.

How it is calculated

R = P × r ÷ 100; F = P × f ÷ 100; S = P − R − F; Total = R × n

P
Sale price of one NFT
r
Creator royalty percentage
f
Marketplace fee percentage
S
Amount the seller receives
n
Number of secondary sales

The royalty and the marketplace fee are both taken as percentages of the gross sale price, which is how the EIP-2981 royalty standard returns a royalty amount for a given price. The seller keeps whatever is left after both deductions. Gas, bridging costs and any later tax on the seller's gain are outside the calculation.

When not to use it

  • Do not use it for primary mint revenue, where the creator receives the whole price rather than a royalty.
  • It does not estimate gas costs, which can exceed the royalty on cheap tokens.
  • It is not a tax calculation for royalty income or a seller's capital gain.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing units, such as a price in ETH with expectations in dollars.
  • Assuming every marketplace enforces the royalty set at mint.
  • Forgetting the marketplace fee when estimating what the seller nets.
  • Applying the royalty to the seller's profit instead of the full sale price.

Frequently asked questions

How is an NFT royalty calculated?

It is a percentage of the full sale price, not of the seller's profit. A 7.5% royalty on a 0.8 ETH resale pays the creator 0.06 ETH whatever the seller originally paid for the token.

What royalty percentage do most creators choose?

Collections commonly set royalties between 2.5% and 10%. Higher figures discourage trading on marketplaces where royalties are optional, so many projects stay at or below 10%.

Are NFT royalties always paid?

No. Royalties depend on the marketplace or smart contract enforcing them. Some platforms treat creator royalties as optional or apply a minimum, and private transfers between wallets pay nothing, so actual income can be lower than this estimate.

Does the seller or the buyer pay the royalty?

On most marketplaces the royalty and the platform fee are deducted from the sale price, so the seller bears them and the buyer pays only the listed price plus gas.

Is royalty income taxable?

The IRS treats digital assets received as income, including payments for creative work, as taxable at their fair market value when received. Rules differ by country, and a tax professional can confirm how they apply to a specific case.

Why does the calculator ignore gas fees?

Gas varies by network and by the moment of the transaction and is usually paid separately in the native token. Including a fixed guess would make the split less reliable than leaving it out.
