Your BMI against the WHO adult bands
The chart appears with your result

An adult is classed as overweight when BMI is 25 to 29.9 and as obese at 30 or more. Multiply 25 by your height in metres squared to get the weight where overweight starts. At 175 cm that is 76.6 kg, so someone weighing 85 kg is 8.7 kg above the top of the healthy band.

About this tool

Knowing your BMI number is less useful than knowing where the lines fall for your own height. This calculator takes height and weight in metric or US units and reports how much weight sits above the top of the healthy band (BMI 24.9), the WHO category, and the body weights at which overweight and obesity begin for that height. A scale places your BMI against the four adult bands, and the working shows each threshold as 25 or 30 multiplied by height squared. It is a screening check for adults only: it cannot separate fat from muscle, and it says nothing about waist size or fat distribution, which carry their own risk.

How to use it

  1. Pick a unit system

Metric takes centimetres and kilograms; US takes feet, inches and pounds.

  2. Enter height and weight

The excess weight, category and threshold weights refresh as you type.

  3. Read the thresholds

Compare your weight with the overweight and obesity starting weights, and open the working to see each multiplication.

Examples

Weight
150

Result Weight above the healthy BMI band: 0.4 lb
WHO category: Overweight
BMI: 25.0
Overweight starts at (BMI 25): 150.2 lb
Obesity starts at (BMI 30): 180.3 lb
Top of healthy band (BMI 24.9): 149.6 lb

  1. Weight = 68.04 kg, height = 1.651 m, height² = 2.7258 m²
  2. BMI = 68.04 ÷ 2.7258 = 25 (Overweight)
  3. Overweight line: 25 × 2.7258 = 150.2 lb; obesity line: 30 × 2.7258 = 180.3 lb
  4. Top of healthy band: 24.9 × 2.7258 = 149.6 lb; weight above it = 0.4 lb

The CDC example lands exactly on BMI 25.0, so the person is classed as overweight while sitting less than half a pound above the healthy band.

Weight
85

Result Weight above the healthy BMI band: 8.7 kg
WHO category: Overweight
BMI: 27.8
Overweight starts at (BMI 25): 76.6 kg
Obesity starts at (BMI 30): 91.9 kg
Top of healthy band (BMI 24.9): 76.3 kg

  1. Weight = 85 kg, height = 1.75 m, height² = 3.0625 m²
  2. BMI = 85 ÷ 3.0625 = 27.8 (Overweight)
  3. Overweight line: 25 × 3.0625 = 76.6 kg; obesity line: 30 × 3.0625 = 91.9 kg
  4. Top of healthy band: 24.9 × 3.0625 = 76.3 kg; weight above it = 8.7 kg

At 175 cm the overweight band runs from 76.6 kg to just under 91.9 kg; 85 kg is 8.7 kg above the top of the healthy band.

175 cm, 70 kg

Units
Metric (kg, cm)
Height

Weight
70

Result Weight above the healthy BMI band: 0 kg
WHO category: Healthy weight
BMI: 22.9
Overweight starts at (BMI 25): 76.6 kg
Obesity starts at (BMI 30): 91.9 kg
Top of healthy band (BMI 24.9): 76.3 kg

  1. Weight = 70 kg, height = 1.75 m, height² = 3.0625 m²
  2. BMI = 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.9 (Healthy weight)
  3. Overweight line: 25 × 3.0625 = 76.6 kg; obesity line: 30 × 3.0625 = 91.9 kg
  4. Top of healthy band: 24.9 × 3.0625 = 76.3 kg; weight above it = 0 kg

A BMI of 22.9 is inside the healthy band, so there is no weight above it and the overweight line is still 6.6 kg away.

How it is calculated

BMI = W ÷ h²; overweight line = 25 × h²; obesity line = 30 × h²; excess = W − 24.9 × h²

W
body weight in kilograms (pounds × 0.45359237)
h
height in metres (inches × 0.0254)

BMI is weight divided by the square of height. Because the WHO cut-offs are fixed BMI values, each one converts into a weight for a given height by multiplying it by height squared. The tool reports weight above BMI 24.9, the upper end of the healthy band, only when your BMI rounds to 25.0 or more; otherwise the excess is zero. Categories follow the WHO adult scale with three obesity classes starting at 30, 35 and 40.

Sources

When not to use it

  • Children and teenagers are assessed with BMI-for-age percentiles, not the adult cut-off of 25.
  • Pregnancy changes weight for reasons BMI bands do not account for.
  • Strength athletes can sit above BMI 25 with little body fat, so the excess figure overstates fat.

Common mistakes

  • Treating the excess weight as a target to lose quickly rather than a distance from a screening line.
  • Typing height in metres into the centimetre box, which triggers the height error.
  • Assuming a BMI under 25 rules out risk when waist circumference is high.

Frequently asked questions

What BMI counts as overweight?

For adults the WHO and CDC class a BMI from 25.0 to 29.9 as overweight. From 30.0 upward the category becomes obesity, divided into class I (30–34.9), class II (35–39.9) and class III (40 and above).

Why is the excess measured from 24.9 and not 25?

24.9 is the highest BMI still inside the healthy band. Measuring from there gives the weight change that would move the displayed BMI back into that band. The overweight starting weight, at BMI 25, is shown separately.

Are the thresholds different for men and women?

No. Adult BMI cut-offs are the same for both sexes. Women typically carry more body fat than men at the same BMI, which is one reason BMI is treated as a screening figure rather than a diagnosis.

Do some countries use lower cut-offs?

Yes. Several Asian health authorities place overweight at a BMI of 23 because risk of type 2 diabetes rises at lower BMI in those populations. This calculator uses the standard WHO cut-offs of 25 and 30.

Does waist size matter if my BMI is normal?

It can. Fat stored around the abdomen is linked to higher cardiometabolic risk, and a waist above roughly 102 cm in men or 88 cm in women is commonly flagged even when BMI is under 25.

Is my height or weight sent anywhere?

No. The arithmetic runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Your last entries are kept only on this device until you reset them.
