A holographic will is a will written and signed in the testator's own handwriting, usually without witnesses. Paste your draft here and the checker reports which of seven common elements it contains. A two-line note that only says 'I, Sam Lee, leave everything to my sister' scores 1 of 7: no date, signature, executor or revocation.

About this tool

Roughly half of US states accept a will written entirely or materially in the maker's own handwriting, and courts regularly hear disputes over ones that left something out. Before copying a draft onto paper, people use this page to see whether the text covers the basics: who is making the will, that it is meant as a will, that earlier wills are revoked, who acts as executor, who takes the residue, the date and a signature line. Each element gets a Found or Missing line with a suggestion of what to add. The check reads wording only; it cannot tell whether your state recognises handwritten wills or whether the final copy is in your hand, which is what makes it valid.

How to use it

  1. Add your draft

Type the text of your will in the box, or open a .txt file from your device.

  2. Read the score

The headline shows how many of the seven elements were found.

  3. Fill the gaps

The table lists each missing element with the wording to add.

  4. Copy it out by hand

Write the final version entirely in your own handwriting, date it and sign it.

Examples

A complete short draft

Your draft will
I, Jane Ann Doe, of Austin, Texas, declare this to be my last will and testament. I revoke all prior wills and codicils. I appoint my brother Mark Doe as executor. I give my car to my niece Lily Doe. I give the residue of my estate to my husband Paul Doe. Written by my own hand on March 3, 2026. Signed: Jane Ann Doe

Result Elements found: 7 of 7
Elements missing: 0
Words in draft: 65

  1. Checked 7 elements by searching for their usual wording.
  2. 7 found, 0 missing.
  3. All elements present. Copy the final text by hand, in full, and sign it.

Every element is present, so the remaining job is to copy it out by hand and sign it.

A one-sentence will

Your draft will
I, Sam Lee, leave everything to my sister.

Result Elements found: 1 of 7
Elements missing: 6
Words in draft: 8

  1. Checked 7 elements by searching for their usual wording.
  2. 1 found, 6 missing.
  3. Next: Say plainly that this document is your last will.

Only the identity statement is found; there is no date, signature line, executor or revocation clause.

Dated note that mentions a witness

Your draft will
This is my will. Dated 12/05/2025. Witness: Tom.

Result Elements found: 2 of 7
Elements missing: 5
Words in draft: 10

  1. Checked 7 elements by searching for their usual wording.
  2. 2 found, 5 missing.
  3. Next: Open with "I, [full legal name], of [city and state]".

The intent and the numeric date are found, and the tool notes that a handwritten will does not need witnesses where it is allowed.

How it is calculated

score = number of the 7 elements whose usual wording appears in the draft

identity
an opening of the form 'I, full name'
intent
words such as 'last will' or 'will and testament'
date
a written date like March 3, 2026, 3 March 2026 or 12/05/2025
signature
a 'Signed' or signature line at the end

The Uniform Probate Code section 2-502(b) treats a will as holographic when the signature and the material portions are in the testator's handwriting. Some states also require the whole document, or the date, to be handwritten. The checker searches the text for the phrases each element normally uses: revoke, executor or personal representative, residue or remainder, a written date and a signature line. A match means the element is probably present, not that it is legally sufficient.

When not to use it

  • If your state does not recognise handwritten wills, a witnessed will is needed instead.
  • Estates with trusts, businesses or minor children usually need a lawyer-drafted will.
  • The checker cannot judge capacity, undue influence or whether the copy is in your hand.

Common mistakes

  • Filling in a printed form by hand, which many states will not treat as holographic.
  • Leaving out the date, which can make it impossible to tell which of two wills came last.
  • Forgetting a residuary clause, so property not named passes by intestacy rules.

Frequently asked questions

Is a handwritten will legally valid?

In many US states it is, provided the signature and the material provisions are in the testator's handwriting. Other states, and several countries, require two witnesses for every will. Check your state's probate statute before relying on one.

Does a holographic will need witnesses?

Not where holographic wills are recognised; the handwriting itself is the evidence. In probate, people familiar with the handwriting may later be asked to confirm it is genuine.

Can I type my will and sign it by hand?

A typed will with only a handwritten signature is usually not holographic. It generally needs to be witnessed, and in some states notarised as self-proving, to be valid.

Why does the date matter so much?

When two wills are found, the later one normally controls. Without a date a court may not be able to order them, and some states make the date a formal requirement for handwritten wills.

What does a residuary clause do?

It passes everything you did not give away specifically, such as a bank account opened later. Without one, that property goes to relatives under the state's intestacy rules.

Is my draft sent anywhere?

No. The text is checked inside your browser and is left out of the link the Share button creates.
