X does not count characters one by one. Most Latin letters weigh 1, while emoji and Chinese, Japanese or Korean characters weigh 2, and every link counts as 23 however long it is. So 'Read this' plus a 60-character URL uses 33 of your 280, not 70.

About this tool

A post that looks short in a notes app can still be rejected by X, because the platform weighs characters rather than simply counting them. This counter applies the same weighting the official twitter-text library uses: links count as 23 because t.co wraps them, emoji count as 2, and CJK scripts count as 2 per character. It shows the weighted total, how many characters are left against the standard 280 limit or the 25,000 limit for Premium accounts, and a breakdown of links, emoji, hashtags and mentions. One limit: X adjusts its rules from time to time, and attached media or quoted posts are not part of the count here, so treat a result within a character or two of the limit as a reason to check in the composer.

How to use it

  1. Paste the post

Type or paste the exact text, including links, hashtags and emoji.

  2. Pick the limit

Choose Standard for 280 characters or Premium for 25,000.

  3. Read what is left

The weighted total and characters left update as you type; a warning appears when you go over.

  4. Check the breakdown

The steps show how much of the total comes from links, emoji and wide characters.

Examples

A short English post

Your post
Hello world
Post limit
Standard (280)

Result Weighted characters: 11
Characters left: 269
Status: Fits
Visible characters: 11
Links (23 each): 0
Emoji (2 each): 0
Wide characters (2 each): 0
Hashtags: 0
Mentions: 0

  1. URLs: 0 × 23 = 0 characters (each link is wrapped by t.co).
  2. Emoji: 0 × 2 = 0; CJK and other wide characters: 0 × 2 = 0.
  3. Weighted total = 11 of 280, leaving 269.

Eleven Latin characters weigh one each, leaving 269 of the 280 allowed.

Japanese text

日本語のテスト
Post limit
Standard (280)

Result Weighted characters: 14
Characters left: 266
Status: Fits
Visible characters: 7
Links (23 each): 0
Emoji (2 each): 0
Wide characters (2 each): 7
Hashtags: 0
Mentions: 0

  1. URLs: 0 × 23 = 0 characters (each link is wrapped by t.co).
  2. Emoji: 0 × 2 = 0; CJK and other wide characters: 7 × 2 = 14.
  3. Weighted total = 14 of 280, leaving 266.

Each of the seven CJK characters counts twice, which is why Japanese posts hit the limit at about 140 characters.

A post with a long link

  1. URLs: 1 × 23 = 23 characters (each link is wrapped by t.co).
  2. Emoji: 0 × 2 = 0; CJK and other wide characters: 0 × 2 = 0.
  3. Weighted total = 33 of 280, leaving 247.

The link counts as 23 however long it is, plus 10 for the words and space before it.

How it is calculated

weighted = (characters weighing 1) + 2 × (wide characters + emoji) + 23 × links

weight 1
code points U+0000–U+10FF and a few punctuation ranges (U+2000–200D, U+2010–201F, U+2032–2037)
weight 2
every other character, including CJK, plus each emoji sequence counted once
23
the fixed length of a t.co shortened link

The text is first normalised to Unicode NFC so accented letters typed two ways count the same. Links starting with http, https or www are replaced by a fixed 23. Each remaining grapheme is checked: an emoji, even a family or flag built from several code points, counts 2; otherwise each code point is weighed by the ranges above. The total is compared with the selected limit.

When not to use it

  • Bare domains such as example.com without http or www are counted as plain text here, while X may still turn them into links.
  • Reddit, Threads and Bluesky use different limits and plain counting, so this weighting does not apply there.

Common mistakes

  • Shortening a URL by hand to save space, when X counts every link as 23 regardless.
  • Assuming a Japanese or Chinese post gets 280 characters, when each character weighs 2 and the practical limit is 140.

Frequently asked questions

Why does an emoji count as two characters?

X's counting rules give every emoji a weight of 2, including combined emoji such as a family or a skin-tone variant built from several code points. The whole sequence still counts only 2.

How many characters does a link use on X?

Every link counts as 23 characters, because X wraps it with its t.co shortener. A 15-character link and a 200-character link both use 23 of your limit.

Do Arabic or Cyrillic letters count as one?

Yes. Arabic, Hebrew, Greek and Cyrillic all fall within the first weight range (up to U+10FF), so each letter counts 1, the same as English.

Do mentions and hashtags count toward the limit?

Hashtags and mentions written in the body count like any other text. Usernames added automatically at the start of a reply are not counted by X, so do not paste them in if you are checking a reply.

What is the limit for Premium accounts?

Premium subscribers can post up to 25,000 characters. Posts over 280 are shown truncated in the timeline with a Show more link, so the first 280 still matter.

Is my post sent anywhere while I count it?

No. The counting runs in your browser, and the text is neither saved nor posted to X or anywhere else.
