STAR Method Generator

Two or three sentences of context.

Your goal or responsibility, not the team's.

Usually the longest part, around half the answer.

A measurable outcome and, if useful, what you learned.

Your STAR answer —
Words
—
Speaking time
—
Action share
—

Type the four parts of your story and the generator joins them into one answer in Situation, Task, Action, Result order. It counts words per part and times the answer at 140 words per minute, so a 40-word draft reads in about 17 seconds. It also flags an Action under 40% of the answer or a Result without a number.

About this tool

Behavioural interview questions such as tell me about a time you handled conflict are scored on structure as much as content. The STAR format keeps an answer on track: context, your responsibility, what you did, and what changed. This generator takes each part in its own box, tidies capitalisation and full stops, and returns the joined answer ready to rehearse. Beside it you see the word count, an estimated speaking time and a table showing how the words split across the four parts, because the usual weakness is a long Situation and a thin Action. It checks structure and length only; it cannot judge whether the story fits the role or invent details for you.

How to use it

  1. Add the question

Optionally type the interview question so it heads the answer you copy.

  2. Fill the four boxes

Write the Situation, Task, Action and Result in your own words, a sentence or a few each.

  3. Check the balance

Read the table and warnings: the Action should carry about half the words and the Result should have a number.

  4. Copy and rehearse

Copy the joined answer and say it aloud against the speaking time shown.

Examples

A product bug fixed in a month

Interview question
Describe a problem you solved.
Situation
our checkout page lost 30% of mobile users
Task
I had to find the cause within two weeks
Action
I ran session recordings, found a slow payment script, and moved it after page load
Result
mobile drop-off fell to 18% within a month

Result Your STAR answer: Q: Describe a problem you solved.

Our checkout page lost 30% of mobile users. I had to find the cause within two weeks. I ran session recordings, found a slow payment script, and moved it after page load. Mobile drop-off fell to 18% within a month.
Words: 40
Speaking time: 17 s
Action share: 37.5%

  1. Each part is trimmed, capitalised and given a closing full stop, then joined in S-T-A-R order.
  2. Words: 8 + 9 + 15 + 8 = 40.
  3. Speaking time = 40 words ÷ 140 words per minute = 17 s.

The Action is only 37.5% of the answer, so the tool flags it as short; a stronger answer spends more words on what you did.

Keeping an unhappy client

Situation
A client threatened to leave.
Task
I owned the account.
Action
I called them the same day, listed every missed deadline, rebuilt the schedule with their team, and sent weekly progress notes.
Result
They renewed for 2 more years.

Result Your STAR answer: A client threatened to leave. I owned the account. I called them the same day, listed every missed deadline, rebuilt the schedule with their team, and sent weekly progress notes. They renewed for 2 more years.
Words: 36
Speaking time: 15 s
Action share: 58.3%

  1. Each part is trimmed, capitalised and given a closing full stop, then joined in S-T-A-R order.
  2. Words: 5 + 4 + 21 + 6 = 36.
  3. Speaking time = 36 words ÷ 140 words per minute = 15 s.

The Action carries most of the words and the Result has a number, so no warnings appear.

How it is calculated

speaking time = total words ÷ 140 per minute; Action share = Action words ÷ total words × 100

total words
Unicode-aware word count across Situation, Task, Action and Result
140
typical conversational speaking pace in words per minute
Action share
percentage of the answer spent on what you did

Each part is trimmed, given a capital letter and a closing full stop if it lacks one, then joined in STAR order. Words are counted per part. A warning appears when the Action is under 40% of the answer, when the Result contains no digit, or when the spoken length passes three minutes.

When not to use it

  • For case interviews or technical questions, which follow their own frameworks rather than a past story.
  • As a substitute for a true example: the tool only arranges what you write.

Common mistakes

  • Spending most of the answer on background and leaving one line for the Action.
  • Saying we throughout, so the interviewer cannot tell what you did yourself.
  • Ending with a vague Result like it went well instead of a measured change.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a STAR answer be?

Most interviewers expect one to two minutes spoken, roughly 150 to 300 words at a conversational pace. The tool shows the estimated time and warns past three minutes.

Why does the Action part matter most?

The question asks what you did, so the Action is where your skills show. Career guides commonly suggest giving it about half the answer, which is why a share under 40% is flagged.

Does the Result need a number?

Not always, but a figure such as a percentage, a time saved or a customer rating makes the outcome concrete and easy to remember. The tool warns when the Result has no digit.

Can I write the parts in another language?

Yes. Word counts follow Unicode rules, so Arabic, accented European text and other scripts are counted correctly, and the joined answer keeps your wording.

Is my story sent anywhere?

No. Joining and counting run in your browser, and nothing you write is stored once you leave the page.
