X counts posts by weight, not by visible characters. Latin letters weigh 1, each link counts 23 whatever its length, and emoji or CJK characters weigh 2, all against a 280 limit. A post reading 'Read', a long article link and 'now' therefore counts 32, leaving 248.

About this tool

A plain character counter often disagrees with the composer on X, because X weighs characters before comparing them with the 280 limit. Long links shrink to a fixed 23 after t.co wrapping, while emoji and Chinese, Japanese or Korean characters count double. This counter applies those published twitter-text weights while you type and shows the weighted total, how many characters remain, and how many links, emoji and wide characters it found, so you can see exactly where the length went. One limit: link detection follows common patterns, so an unusual domain written without http may be counted as plain text rather than as 23. Premium accounts with longer posts are not modelled here.

How to use it

  1. Paste the post

Type or paste the full text, including links, mentions and emoji.

  2. Read the weighted total

The headline number is the length X compares with 280; Characters left shows the margin.

  3. Find what is costing space

Check the link, emoji and wide-character counts and the working to see which parts weigh more than one.

Examples

A short English post

Your post
Hello world

Result Weighted characters (of 280): 11
Characters left: 269
Status: Fits in one post
Visible characters: 11
Links (23 each): 0
Emoji (2 each): 0
Wide characters (2 each): 0
Words: 2

  1. 0 link(s) × 23 = 0
  2. 0 emoji × 2 = 0
  3. Other characters: 11 (CJK and other wide characters count 2 each, 0 found)
  4. Total 11 of 280, leaving 269

Every Latin letter and the space weigh 1, so eleven characters leave 269.

A post with a long link

Your post
Read https://example.com/a/very/long/path/to/an/article now

Result Weighted characters (of 280): 32
Characters left: 248
Status: Fits in one post
Visible characters: 59
Links (23 each): 1
Emoji (2 each): 0
Wide characters (2 each): 0
Words: 12

  1. 1 link(s) × 23 = 23
  2. 0 emoji × 2 = 0
  3. Other characters: 9 (CJK and other wide characters count 2 each, 0 found)
  4. Total 32 of 280, leaving 248

The link is shortened by t.co and counts as 23, however long the original address is.

Japanese greeting

Your post
こんにちは

Result Weighted characters (of 280): 10
Characters left: 270
Status: Fits in one post
Visible characters: 5
Links (23 each): 0
Emoji (2 each): 0
Wide characters (2 each): 5
Words: 1

  1. 0 link(s) × 23 = 0
  2. 0 emoji × 2 = 0
  3. Other characters: 10 (CJK and other wide characters count 2 each, 5 found)
  4. Total 10 of 280, leaving 270

Each kana counts double, which is why posts in Japanese, Chinese or Korean fit about 140 characters.

How it is calculated

length = 23 × links + 2 × emoji + 2 × wide characters + 1 × other characters

links
URLs, each replaced by a 23-character t.co link
emoji
emoji sequences, including skin tones and flags, each weighing 2
wide characters
code points outside the Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, Hebrew and common punctuation ranges, such as CJK

The text is normalised to NFC, links are pulled out and counted at 23, and the rest is split into grapheme clusters. Any cluster that is an emoji counts 2. Other code points weigh 1 if they fall in U+0000 to U+10FF or the general punctuation ranges listed in the twitter-text v3 configuration, and 2 otherwise. The sum is compared with 280.

When not to use it

  • For premium accounts that can post up to 25,000 characters, the 280 headroom shown here does not apply.
  • For Bluesky, Threads or Mastodon, which count characters with different rules and limits.

Common mistakes

  • Shortening a link by hand to save space, when X counts every link as 23 anyway.
  • Assuming a 140-character Japanese post is short, when each character weighs 2 and it already fills the 280 limit.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a link always count as 23?

X wraps every URL in its t.co shortener, and the wrapped link has a fixed length of 23 characters. A two-character domain and a 200-character tracking URL therefore cost the same.

Why do emoji count as two characters?

The twitter-text rules give every emoji a weight of 2, including combined sequences such as a family emoji or a flag, which are made of several code points but count only once at weight 2.

Why can I write only about 140 characters in Chinese or Japanese?

Characters outside the Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic and Hebrew blocks weigh 2. CJK scripts pack more meaning into each character, so X halved their allowance when it raised the limit to 280 in 2017.

Do Arabic or accented letters count double?

No. Arabic, Hebrew, Cyrillic, Greek and accented Latin letters all sit below U+10FF and weigh 1, the same as plain English letters.

Do @mentions count toward the limit?

A mention typed into the text counts like any other characters. Usernames added automatically at the start of a reply are not counted by X, so leave them out when checking a reply.

Is the text I paste stored?

No. The count runs in your browser, and nothing you type is saved after you leave the page.
