Currency Converter (Travel)

What are you working out?

Price in local currency, or the home-currency amount you exchange.

Mid-market rate, e.g. 0.92 euros for 1 US dollar.

ATM withdrawal charge or flat commission.

Divide the local price by the exchange rate, then add your card's markup and any fixed fee. A €92 meal at 0.92 euros per dollar is worth $100; with a 3% foreign transaction fee the card charge is $103, so the effective rate drops to about 0.893.

About this tool

Travellers lose money in the gap between the rate quoted on the news and the rate they actually get at a till, an ATM or an airport booth. This calculator takes the rate you type in, applies a percentage markup and a fixed charge, and shows either what a local price really costs in your home currency or how much local cash a home-currency amount buys. It also prints the fees in home currency and the effective rate, so two offers can be compared on one number. It does not fetch live rates: check a current mid-market rate from your bank or a rate site and enter it, because rates move during the day and the result is only as fresh as the figure you supply.

How to use it

  1. Pick the direction

Choose pricing something abroad, or exchanging home currency for local cash.

  2. Enter the amount and rate

Type the amount and the rate as local units for one unit of your home currency.

  3. Set the fees

Move the markup slider to your card's or booth's percentage and add any flat ATM or commission charge.

  4. Read the effective rate

Compare the effective rate with the quoted one to see how much the fees cost.

Examples

€92 dinner, 0.92 rate, 3% card fee

What are you working out?
Price abroad in home
Amount
92
Exchange rate
0.92
Card or booth markup
3
Fixed fee (home currency)
0

Result Result (home cost or local cash): 103.00
Value at the quoted rate: 100
Fees paid (home currency): 3
Effective rate after fees: 0.8932

  1. Value at the quoted rate = 92 ÷ 0.92 = 100 home
  2. Fees = 100 × 3% + 0 = 3
  3. Total home cost = 100 + 3 = 103

The meal is worth $100 at the quoted rate; a 3% foreign transaction fee brings the card charge to $103.

$500 at a booth: $5 commission + 2%

2
Fixed fee (home currency)
5

Result Result (home cost or local cash): 446.29
Value at the quoted rate: 460
Fees paid (home currency): 14.9
Effective rate after fees: 0.8926

  1. After fixed fee = 500 − 5 = 495
  2. After 2% fee = 495 × 0.98 = 485.1
  3. Local cash = 485.1 × 0.92 = 446.29

($500 − $5) × 0.98 × 0.92 leaves €446.29, about €14 less than the €460 the quoted rate suggests.

How it is calculated

Spending: home cost = P ÷ r × (1 + f) + F. Exchanging: local cash = (A − F) × (1 − f) × r

P
price in local currency
A
home-currency amount exchanged
r
exchange rate, local units per 1 home unit
f
percentage markup as a fraction
F
fixed fee in home currency

Card networks convert at their own wholesale rate and the issuer adds a foreign transaction fee, usually 0–3%. Booths fold their margin into a worse rate or charge commission. Treating both as a percentage on top of the quoted rate plus a flat charge reproduces what lands on a statement closely enough to compare options.

When not to use it

  • Do not use it as a source of today's exchange rate; it only applies the rate you enter.
  • It does not model tiered or minimum commissions that change with the amount.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the rate upside down, for example 1.09 dollars per euro instead of 0.92 euros per dollar.
  • Accepting payment in your home currency at a card terminal, which often hides a 3–7% markup.
  • Forgetting the ATM operator's flat charge on top of your own bank's fee.

Frequently asked questions

Which exchange rate should I type in?

Use the mid-market rate, the midpoint between buy and sell prices that banks trade at. Bank sites, central-bank reference rates and rate apps show it. Enter it as how many local units one unit of your home currency buys.

What does the effective rate tell me?

It is the rate you actually got once fees are counted. If the quoted rate is 0.92 and the effective rate is 0.893, you lost about 3% of your money to charges. Comparing effective rates is the simplest way to rank a card, an ATM and a booth.

Should I pay in local currency or home currency at the terminal?

Paying in local currency lets your card network do the conversion at near wholesale rates. Choosing home currency triggers dynamic currency conversion, where the merchant's provider sets the rate, typically several percent worse than the network rate.

How do ATM fees fit in?

Enter the flat charge in the fixed fee box, converted to home currency, and your bank's percentage on the slider. Withdrawing larger sums less often spreads the flat charge over more money and lowers the effective cost.

Why is an airport booth so expensive?

Booths pay high rents and serve travellers with few alternatives, so their spread over mid-market is often 8–15%. Set the slider to that spread and the result shows how much local cash you lose compared with a fee-free card.

Does it work for any pair of currencies?

Yes. The maths only needs the amount and the rate, so any home and local currency works as long as the rate is entered as local units per one home unit.
