Take the fees off the amount first, then multiply what is left by the exchange rate. Exchanging 500 dollars at 0.92 euros per dollar with a 3% card fee: 15 dollars goes to the fee, 485 converts, and you receive 446.20 euros, an effective rate of 0.8924 instead of 0.92.

About this tool

Travellers lose money on currency exchange in two places: the markup hidden in the rate and the fixed fee charged per transaction. This calculator takes the amount you plan to exchange, the rate you are quoted, a percentage fee and an optional flat fee, and shows how much foreign currency actually lands in your hand. It also shows what the same amount would buy with no fees, the fees in your own currency, and the effective rate, so you can compare an airport bureau, a bank card and an ATM on the same terms. The rate is one you type in; the tool does not fetch live market quotes, so check the current rate with your bank or a market source before you rely on the figure.

How to use it

  1. Enter the amount

Type how much of your home currency you plan to exchange or spend.

  2. Type the exchange rate

Enter how many units of the foreign currency one unit of yours buys, as quoted by the bank or bureau.

  3. Set the percentage fee

Move the slider to the card markup or bureau commission, often 0–3% for cards and more at airports.

  4. Add any flat fee

Enter a fixed ATM or counter charge in your home currency, then read the amount received and the effective rate.

Examples

100 EUR at 1.10 USD, no fees

Amount you exchange
100
Exchange rate
1.1
Percentage fee or markup
0
Flat fee
0

Result Foreign currency you receive: 110.00
Received with no fees: 110
Fees in your currency: 0
Effective rate after fees: 1.1
Fees as a share of the amount: 0%

  1. Percentage fee = 100 × 0% = 0
  2. Amount converted = 100 − 0 − 0 = 100
  3. Received = 100 × 1.1 = 110
  4. Effective rate = 110 ÷ 100 = 1.1

With no fees the effective rate equals the quoted rate, so 100 euros become exactly 110 dollars.

500 USD to euros with a 3% card fee

Amount you exchange
500
Exchange rate
0.92
Percentage fee or markup
3
Flat fee
0

Result Foreign currency you receive: 446.20
Received with no fees: 460
Fees in your currency: 15
Effective rate after fees: 0.8924
Fees as a share of the amount: 3%

  1. Percentage fee = 500 × 3% = 15
  2. Amount converted = 500 − 15 − 0 = 485
  3. Received = 485 × 0.92 = 446.2
  4. Effective rate = 446.2 ÷ 500 = 0.8924

The 3% fee takes 15 dollars, the remaining 485 converts at 0.92, and you get 446.20 euros instead of 460.

200 USD from a Japanese ATM

Amount you exchange
200
Exchange rate
150
Percentage fee or markup
1
Flat fee
5

Result Foreign currency you receive: 28,950.00
Received with no fees: 30,000
Fees in your currency: 7
Effective rate after fees: 144.75
Fees as a share of the amount: 3.5%

  1. Percentage fee = 200 × 1% = 2
  2. Amount converted = 200 − 2 − 5 = 193
  3. Received = 193 × 150 = 28950
  4. Effective rate = 28950 ÷ 200 = 144.75

A 1% markup plus a 5 dollar ATM charge cost 7 dollars, 3.5% of the withdrawal, leaving 193 dollars to convert at 150 yen.

How it is calculated

Received = (A − A × p ÷ 100 − F) × R; effective rate = Received ÷ A

A
Amount exchanged, in your home currency
p
Percentage fee or markup
F
Flat fee, in your home currency
R
Quoted exchange rate, foreign units per home unit

Both fees are charged in your home currency and are removed before conversion, which is how most card foreign transaction fees and ATM charges work. The remainder is multiplied by the quoted rate. Dividing the foreign amount received by the full amount you handed over gives the effective rate, a single number that lets you compare offers with different fee structures.

When not to use it

  • Do not use it to find today's market rate; it only applies the rate you enter.
  • It does not model fees charged in the foreign currency after conversion.
  • Large business transfers with tiered pricing need the provider's own quote.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the rate the wrong way round, such as 1.09 dollars per euro when converting dollars to euros.
  • Forgetting the ATM operator's charge on top of your own bank's fee.
  • Comparing bureaus by their headline rate while ignoring the commission.
  • Accepting dynamic currency conversion at a till, which adds its own markup.

Frequently asked questions

Which way round should the exchange rate go?

Enter how many units of the foreign currency one unit of your currency buys. If you change dollars to euros and the quote is 1.09 dollars per euro, enter 1 ÷ 1.09 = 0.9174.

What is the effective rate?

It is the foreign currency you actually receive divided by the full amount you paid, fees included. A 3% fee on a 0.92 rate brings the effective rate down to 0.8924, so every dollar is really buying 0.8924 euros.

Where does a percentage fee usually come from?

Many cards add a foreign transaction fee of around 1–3% of each purchase. Airport bureaus often build a larger margin into the rate they display, which you can enter here as a percentage over the market rate.

How do I compare a bureau and an ATM?

Run the calculator once for each, using the same amount. Enter the bureau's commission and rate, then the ATM's fee and your card's markup. The option with the higher amount received, or the higher effective rate, costs you less.

Why do fixed fees matter more for small amounts?

A 5 dollar ATM charge is 2.5% of a 200 dollar withdrawal but only 0.5% of a 1,000 dollar one. The fee share figure shows this, which is why fewer, larger withdrawals usually cost less in total.

Does the tool use live rates?

No. You type the rate, so the result matches the quote in front of you. Market rates move during the day, and the rate a bank or bureau offers usually differs from the mid-market figure shown on news sites.
