Type your headline, long headline, description and business name, pick a banner size, and the preview assembles the text that slot would carry. Each asset is checked against the Google Ads limits: 30 characters for a headline, 90 for a long headline and description, 25 for the business name. A 37-character headline shows as 7 over.

About this tool

Responsive display ads are built from separate assets that Google combines to fit each placement, so a headline that reads well in a rectangle may be cut on a mobile banner. This preview is for media buyers and small advertisers drafting copy before it goes into Google Ads. Pick one of four common sizes and it shows which assets that slot uses, the joined text, and a table of every asset with its character count, the limit and whether it passes. Overlong assets are cut with an ellipsis in the preview and flagged in a warning. It previews text only: images, logos, colours and Google's own layout choices are not drawn, and the real ad may combine assets differently from one auction to the next.

How to use it

  1. Pick a banner size

Choose the rectangle, leaderboard, mobile banner or skyscraper to see which assets that slot uses.

  2. Enter the headline and business name

Both are required; the counter shows how many headline characters remain out of 30.

  3. Add a long headline and description

Both are optional. The leaderboard uses the long headline, and falls back to the short one when it is empty.

  4. Read the asset table

Each row lists characters used, the limit and OK, Too long or Empty, with warnings for anything over.

Examples

Medium rectangle, all assets fit

Banner size
300×250 rectangle
Headline
Spring Sale on Running Shoes
Description
Free returns for 60 days on every pair.
Business name
Stride Co

Result Ad text as shown: Spring Sale on Running Shoes | Free returns for 60 days on every pair. | Stride Co
Previewed size: Medium rectangle 300×250
Headline characters left: 2
Assets over the limit: 0

  1. Size Medium rectangle 300×250 shows: Headline, Description, Business name.
  2. Assets over their limit: 0 of 4.

The 28-character headline leaves two characters spare, and the rectangle shows headline, description and business name together.

A 37-character headline on a mobile banner

Banner size
320×50 mobile
Headline
Huge Spring Sale on All Running Shoes
Business name
Stride Co

Result Ad text as shown: Huge Spring Sale on All Runni…
Previewed size: Mobile banner 320×50
Headline characters left: -7
Assets over the limit: 1

  1. Size Mobile banner 320×50 shows: Headline.
  2. Headline cut to 30 characters with an ellipsis.
  3. Assets over their limit: 1 of 4.

The headline runs seven characters past the 30 limit, so the preview cuts it and Google Ads would reject the asset.

Leaderboard with a long headline

Banner size
728×90 leaderboard
Headline
Running Shoes Sale
Long headline
Running shoes for road and trail, with free 60-day returns
Business name
Stride Co

Result Ad text as shown: Running shoes for road and trail, with free 60-day returns | Stride Co
Previewed size: Leaderboard 728×90
Headline characters left: 12
Assets over the limit: 0

  1. Size Leaderboard 728×90 shows: Long headline, Business name.
  2. Assets over their limit: 0 of 4.

The 728×90 slot uses the long headline next to the business name instead of the short headline.

How it is calculated

characters left = limit − characters used; an asset passes when characters used ≤ limit

limit
Google Ads maximum: headline 30, long headline 90, description 90, business name 25
characters used
visible characters after collapsing repeated spaces, counting each emoji or accented letter once

Each size maps to the assets it typically shows: the rectangle and skyscraper use headline, description and business name; the leaderboard uses the long headline and business name; the 320×50 mobile banner uses the headline alone. Assets longer than their limit are shortened to the limit with a trailing ellipsis so you can see where the cut falls. Google counts some double-width scripts such as Chinese or Japanese as two characters each, which this preview does not do.

When not to use it

  • Checking how your images and logo will crop, since only the text is previewed.
  • Writing ads in Chinese, Japanese or Korean, where Google counts each character double.
  • Predicting the exact layout Google will serve, which changes per placement and auction.

Common mistakes

  • Writing one 30-character headline and expecting the leaderboard to show a longer line.
  • Leaving the description empty, so rectangles show only a headline and a name.
  • Repeating the business name inside the headline, which wastes characters the name slot already covers.

Frequently asked questions

What are the character limits for responsive display ads?

Google Ads allows up to 30 characters for each short headline, 90 for the long headline, 90 for each description and 25 for the business name. The table here checks all four at once.

Why does the 320×50 banner show only the headline?

A mobile banner has room for about one line of text next to a logo, so Google usually shows a single short headline there. Write that headline so it makes sense on its own, without the description.

Which text appears in a 728×90 leaderboard?

The leaderboard is wide and short, so it usually carries the long headline beside the business name. If you leave the long headline empty, this preview falls back to your short headline, which is also what happens when Google has nothing longer to use.

Does an emoji count as one character?

Here each emoji or accented letter counts as one visible character. Google Ads restricts emoji in many ad texts anyway, so a headline that relies on them may be disapproved regardless of its length.

Can I add several headlines and descriptions?

Google Ads takes up to five headlines and five descriptions per responsive display ad and mixes them. This preview checks one of each at a time; run each variant through it to confirm every one fits.

Why is the overlong text cut instead of rejected?

The cut shows where the asset would stop at its limit so you can rewrite around that point. Google Ads itself will not save an asset over the limit, so treat any Too long row as something to fix before uploading.
