A Meta feed ad has three text slots: primary text above the creative, a headline and a short description beside the button. Meta's guide suggests 125, 40 and 30 characters. This generator lays your copy out in that order and marks any field that would be cut, so a 130-character primary text shows as truncated with See more.

About this tool

Copywriters and small-business owners often draft Meta ads in a document, then discover in Ads Manager that the hook got cut off behind See more. This generator assembles a plain-text mockup of a feed ad: page name with the Sponsored label, primary text, an image placeholder, then headline, description and the call-to-action button you pick. Next to it, a table counts the characters in each field against Meta's recommended lengths and says whether it fits or will be truncated. Counting is by visible character, so emoji and accented letters count once each. The mockup is a text layout, not a pixel-accurate render: real truncation depends on device width, font and placement, and Stories or Reels show text differently from the feed.

How to use it

  1. Name the page

Type the Facebook or Instagram page name that will appear at the top with Sponsored.

  2. Paste the primary text

Enter the body copy. The character count updates as you type and flags anything past 125.

  3. Add headline and description

The headline is required; the description is optional and is often hidden on mobile placements.

  4. Choose the button

Pick the call-to-action label, then read the mockup and the per-field table.

Examples

A short bakery ad

Page name
Harbor Bakery
Primary text
Fresh bread daily.
Headline
Order by 9am
Description
Call-to-action button
Shop Now

Result Feed ad mockup: Harbor Bakery · Sponsored
Fresh bread daily.

Order by 9am [Shop Now]
Primary text characters: 18
Headline characters: 12
Fields over the limit: 0
Primary text words: 3

  1. Primary text: 18 of 125 characters → Fits
  2. Headline: 12 of 40 characters → Fits
  3. Description: 0 of 30 characters → Empty

Both texts sit well inside Meta's recommended lengths, so the mockup shows them in full with a Shop Now button.

Primary text characters: 130
Headline characters: 11
Fields over the limit: 1
Primary text words: 1

  1. Primary text: 130 of 125 characters → Truncated
  2. Headline: 11 of 40 characters → Fits
  3. Description: 0 of 30 characters → Empty

At 130 characters the primary text passes the 125-character mark, so the feed cuts it and adds See more.

When not to use it

  • Checking how an ad will look in Stories or Reels, where text sits over the creative.
  • Confirming policy approval, which only Meta's review can give.
  • Previewing image crops or video safe zones.

Common mistakes

  • Putting the offer at the end of a long primary text, where See more hides it.
  • Relying on the description, which many mobile placements do not show.
  • Repeating the headline word for word in the primary text.

Frequently asked questions

What character limits does Meta recommend for ad text?

Meta's Ads Guide suggests about 125 characters of primary text, 40 for the headline and 30 for the description in feed placements. These are display recommendations rather than hard caps; longer text is accepted but gets cut with See more or an ellipsis.

Why does my primary text show See more?

In the feed, Meta shows roughly the first 125 characters (often around three lines on a phone) and hides the rest behind See more. The mockup cuts at 125 characters to show where most readers stop.

Do emoji count as one character?

Here each visible symbol counts once, including emoji built from several code points such as flags or family emoji. Some other counters count code units instead, which can make an emoji look like two or more characters.

Is the description always shown?

No. Depending on placement and device, Meta may hide the description entirely. Treat it as a bonus line and keep the key message in the headline or the primary text.

Does this preview Instagram ads too?

The text slots for Instagram feed ads are the same, so the counts apply. Instagram shows the account name instead of a page name and places the primary text below the image, so read the mockup order as a Facebook feed layout.

Can a headline longer than 40 characters still run?

Yes, Meta accepts it, but on many placements the end is replaced by an ellipsis. The table marks it as Truncated so you can decide whether the lost words matter.
