Paste your ad caption, add a headline and pick Feed, Stories or Reels. The preview shows the text a viewer sees before the more link: about 125 characters in the feed, so a 160-character caption hides 35. It also counts hashtags against Instagram's limit of 30.

About this tool

Most people scrolling past an Instagram ad read only the first line or two of the caption, so the offer has to land before the text folds. This preview cuts your primary text where the feed or a story overlay usually does, shows the call-to-action button you chose, and lists each element against its limit: Meta's suggested 125 characters for primary text and 40 for the headline, plus Instagram's hard caps of 2,200 caption characters and 30 hashtags. Emoji and accented letters count as one character each. The fold positions are typical values; the exact cut depends on screen width, font and the app version, so treat it as a close guide rather than a pixel-exact mock-up.

How to use it

  1. Paste the caption

Put your primary text in the caption box, including hashtags and @mentions.

  2. Add a headline

Optional: type the headline shown beside the button under the image.

  3. Choose the button and placement

Pick the call-to-action label and Feed, Stories or Reels; the fold point changes with placement.

  4. Read the check table

Each row compares a length with its limit and marks it Within or Over.

  1. Characters are counted as graphemes, so an emoji or accented letter counts as one.
  2. In feed about 125 characters show before "… more": 39 − 125 = 0 hidden.
  3. Hashtags counted: 1 of the 30 Instagram allows.

At 39 characters the whole caption shows in the feed, and the 21-character headline sits well under 40.

  1. Characters are counted as graphemes, so an emoji or accented letter counts as one.
  2. In stories about 72 characters show before "… more": 121 − 72 = 49 hidden.
  3. Hashtags counted: 0 of the 30 Instagram allows.

Stories show far less text than the feed, so 49 characters end up behind the more link.

How it is calculated

hidden characters = max(0, caption length − fold), with fold = 125 in Feed and 72 in Stories and Reels

caption length
number of graphemes in the trimmed primary text
fold
typical number of characters shown before the more link

Length is measured in graphemes, the characters a reader sees, so a flag emoji or an accented letter counts once. Hashtags are runs that start with # and end at a space; mentions start with @. The preview keeps the first fold characters, trims trailing spaces and adds the more link.

When not to use it

  • It does not render your image or video, only the text around it.
  • It cannot tell you whether Meta will approve the ad under its advertising standards.

Common mistakes

  • Putting the offer or price after the first 125 characters, where most viewers never tap.
  • Writing a headline past 40 characters that gets cut on narrow phones.
  • Stacking more than 30 hashtags, which Instagram refuses to post.

Frequently asked questions

How many characters show before more in an Instagram feed ad?

Around 125 characters, which is also the length Meta suggests for primary text. The exact cut varies with the phone's width and font size, and line breaks can bring it forward.

Why is the Stories fold so much shorter?

In Stories and Reels the caption sits over the media in a small overlay, so only a line or two shows. This preview uses 72 characters as a typical cut-off for those placements.

What is the maximum caption length on Instagram?

Instagram accepts up to 2,200 characters in a caption. Anything longer is blocked, and the check table marks it as Over.

How many hashtags can an Instagram ad carry?

Instagram allows at most 30 hashtags in one caption. The tool counts each word starting with # and warns when the total goes past 30.

Do emoji count as one character?

Yes. Characters are counted the way a reader sees them, so a single emoji, even one built from several code points like a family or a flag, counts as one.

Does the headline appear in every placement?

No. The headline usually appears in the feed under the media next to the button, and is often hidden in Stories and Reels. Keep the key message in the caption too.
