Enter up to three headlines, two descriptions, a final URL and two display paths, and the preview shows the ad as a search result: headlines joined by bars, the Sponsored label and display URL, then the description. Running Shoes Sale plus Free Shipping Over $50 makes a 43-character headline line, with both parts inside the 30-character limit.

About this tool

Responsive search ads are written in pieces, and the pieces have hard limits: 30 characters per headline, 90 per description and 15 per display path. Writing them in a spreadsheet makes it hard to see how they read together. This preview assembles the parts the way a search result shows them, builds the display URL from your landing page domain and paths, and lists every part with its character count and how far it runs over. It is a mockup: Google rotates and combines headlines on its own, may show only two of them, and trims long lines on small screens, so the live ad can differ from what you see here.

How to use it

  1. Write the headlines

Fill in Headline 1, and optionally Headlines 2 and 3, keeping each within 30 characters.

  2. Add descriptions

Enter one or two descriptions of up to 90 characters each.

  3. Set the link

Paste the final URL and add up to two display paths, such as shoes and sale.

  4. Check the table

Each part is listed with its character count, its limit and whether it fits or by how much it runs over.

Examples

Shoe shop ad with two headlines

Headline 1
Running Shoes Sale
Headline 2
Free Shipping Over $50
Description 1
Shop road and trail running shoes from top brands. Easy 30-day returns.
Final URL
https://www.example.com/running
Display path 1
shoes
Display path 2
sale
Headline 3
Description 2

Result Headline line: Running Shoes Sale | Free Shipping Over $50
Display URL: Sponsored · example.com/shoes/sale
Description line: Shop road and trail running shoes from top brands. Easy 30-day returns.
Headline line length: 43
Parts over the limit: 0

  1. Headlines joined with " | ": 2 headline(s), 43 characters shown.
  2. Display URL = domain example.com + path /shoes/sale.
  3. Each part checked against Google Ads limits: headline 30, description 90, path 15 characters.

Two headlines of 18 and 22 characters join into one 43-character blue line, and the paths turn the final URL into example.com/shoes/sale.

A headline that runs over

Headline 1
Lightweight Trail Running Shoes For Men
Description 1
Grip on wet rock and mud.
Final URL
example.com
Headline 2
Headline 3
Description 2
Display path 1
Display path 2

Result Headline line: Lightweight Trail Running Shoes For Men
Display URL: Sponsored · example.com
Description line: Grip on wet rock and mud.
Headline line length: 39
Parts over the limit: 1

  1. Headlines joined with " | ": 1 headline(s), 39 characters shown.
  2. Display URL = domain example.com.
  3. Each part checked against Google Ads limits: headline 30, description 90, path 15 characters.

At 39 characters the headline is 9 over the 30-character limit, so Google Ads would reject it until it is shortened.

Local service ad

Headline 1
Plumber in Leeds
Headline 2
Open 24 Hours
Headline 3
Call Now
Description 1
Burst pipes, leaks and boilers fixed fast.
Description 2
Fixed prices, no call-out fee.
Final URL
http://leedsplumbing.co.uk
Display path 1
Display path 2

Result Headline line: Plumber in Leeds | Open 24 Hours | Call Now
Display URL: Sponsored · leedsplumbing.co.uk
Description line: Burst pipes, leaks and boilers fixed fast. Fixed prices, no call-out fee.
Headline line length: 43
Parts over the limit: 0

  1. Headlines joined with " | ": 3 headline(s), 43 characters shown.
  2. Display URL = domain leedsplumbing.co.uk.
  3. Each part checked against Google Ads limits: headline 30, description 90, path 15 characters.

Three short headlines and two descriptions all fit, and the display URL shows only the domain because no path was added.

How it is calculated

headline line = H1 | H2 | H3; display URL = domain / path 1 / path 2

H1–H3
headlines, each limited to 30 characters
domain
host of the final URL without the protocol or a leading www
path
optional display path fields, 15 characters each

Characters are counted as visible characters, so an accented letter or emoji counts once. Extra spaces are collapsed before counting, as the ad editor does. Path 2 only appears after Path 1, matching how Google builds the display URL. Descriptions are joined with a space in the order you enter them.

When not to use it

  • For checking how Google pins or rotates fifteen headlines, the ad strength panel inside Google Ads is the real reference.
  • For display, video or shopping ads, which follow different size and text rules.

Common mistakes

  • Repeating the same phrase across headlines, which wastes space when two are shown side by side.
  • Using a path that does not match the landing page, which confuses people who read the URL before clicking.
  • Counting a double-width character such as some CJK letters as one, when Google Ads counts it as two.

Frequently asked questions

How many characters can a Google search ad headline have?

Each headline in a responsive search ad can have up to 30 characters, and each description up to 90. The two display path fields allow 15 characters each.

Why does my live ad show only two headlines?

Google decides how many headlines to show based on screen size and the query. Often only two appear, and the third is dropped, so make sure the first two make sense on their own.

Where does the display URL come from?

The domain is taken from your final URL, and the two path fields are added after it with slashes. The paths do not need to exist as real pages; they only describe where the click leads.

Do emoji and accented letters count as one character?

Here each visible character counts once. Google Ads counts some wide characters, such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean letters, as two, so leave margin when writing in those scripts.

Is the ad text sent to Google?

No. The preview is built in your browser from what you type, and nothing is submitted to Google Ads or any other service.
