Paste your resume text and the checker scores it against eight rules that applicant tracking systems depend on: a plain email and phone number, standard Experience, Education and Skills headings, 300 to 1,000 words, and no tables or icons. A resume passing six of eight scores 75. Add a job ad to see the keyword overlap.

About this tool

Applicant tracking systems read a resume as plain text before a recruiter sees it, and layouts built for the eye often fall apart there: two-column tables merge lines, star ratings vanish, and a creative heading like My Journey leaves the parser unsure where your jobs are. This checker looks at the text you paste and flags the patterns that most often break parsing. Each rule shows pass or fix with a short note, and the score is simply the share of rules passed. Paste a job posting too and it lists which of the ad's terms your resume never mentions. It reads text only, so it cannot see fonts, images or how a PDF was exported; copy the text out of your final file to test what a parser will actually get.

How to use it

  1. Paste your resume

Copy the text from your final file into the first box, or open a .txt export of it.

  2. Add a job ad

Optionally paste the posting into the second box to add a keyword match check.

  3. Read the checks

The table marks each rule Pass or Fix with a note on what to change.

  4. Fill keyword gaps

The warning lists job ad terms missing from your resume; add the ones that truly describe you.

Examples

Contact line split with a pipe

Resume text
Jane Doe jane@example.com | 555-123-4567 Experience Software engineer at Acme, 2019 to 2024. Education BSc Computer Science Skills Python, SQL

Result ATS readiness score (of 100): 75
Checks passed: 6 of 8
Words: 21
Job ad keyword match: No job ad pasted

  1. Each rule is pass or fix; 6 of 8 passed.
  2. Score = 6 ÷ 8 × 100 = 75.

Contact details and headings are fine, but the | separator and the very short length cost two checks.

Compared with a job ad

Resume text
Jane Doe jane@example.com Experience Engineer Education BSc Skills Python
Job ad text
Python developer with Django experience

Result ATS readiness score (of 100): 67
Checks passed: 6 of 9
Words: 11
Job ad keyword match: 50%

  1. Each rule is pass or fix; 6 of 9 passed.
  2. Score = 6 ÷ 9 × 100 = 67.

The ad has four key terms; the resume covers Python and experience but not developer or Django, so the match is 50%.

How it is calculated

score = rules passed ÷ rules checked × 100

rules checked
eight format rules, or nine when a job ad is pasted
keyword match
share of distinct job ad words of four or more letters, minus common filler, that appear in the resume

Each rule is a plain text test. Headings must sit on their own short line and contain a standard word such as experience, education or skills. A phone needs seven or more digits in one run. Pipes, box-drawing lines and repeated tabs count as table marks, and stars, checkmarks and emoji count as icons. The keyword check passes at 60% coverage of the ad's terms.

When not to use it

  • It cannot inspect a PDF or Word file's layout, fonts or images, only the text you paste.
  • It does not mimic any one vendor's ranking, so treat the score as a format check, not a hiring forecast.

Common mistakes

  • Pasting text from a design file whose columns already look tidy, hiding the merge a parser would see.
  • Stuffing every missing job ad word into the resume, including ones that do not describe real experience.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a pipe between my email and phone fail?

Pipes and box lines usually come from tables or column layouts. Some parsers read them as cell breaks and misplace the text around them, so a comma or a new line is the safer separator.

Which headings count as standard?

A short line containing experience, employment or work history; education, qualifications or academic; and skills, competencies or technologies. Inventive titles may read well to people but leave a parser guessing.

Why is 300 to 1,000 words the target?

Under about 300 words there is rarely enough detail for keyword matching, and over 1,000 words a resume usually runs past two pages. It is a practical range, not a hard rule from any system.

How is the keyword match worked out?

The checker collects distinct words of four or more letters from the job ad, drops filler such as with and their, and counts how many also appear in your resume. Coverage of 60% or more passes.

Does a score of 100 mean my resume will be shortlisted?

No. It means the text avoids the common parsing traps tested here. Shortlisting still depends on the employer's filters, the recruiter and how well your experience fits the role.

Is my resume uploaded anywhere?

No. The checks run in your browser and the text is not saved when you close the page.
