Expected pipeline revenue is open deals times average deal size times win rate. Forty deals of $25,000 at a 20% win rate are a $1,000,000 pipeline worth about $200,000. Against a $500,000 target that is 2x coverage, while a 20% win rate needs 5x, or $2.5M of pipeline.

About this tool

Sales managers and founders forecasting a quarter usually know three things: how many deals are open, what a typical deal is worth and how often deals close. This calculator combines them into a weighted revenue figure, then reads that pipeline against your revenue target. It reports coverage (pipeline divided by target), the coverage your own win rate demands, the pipeline value and deal count you would need, the gap still to fill, and a monthly revenue pace based on your sales cycle length. The working is shown line by line. The model applies one blended win rate to every deal, so it ignores stage-by-stage probabilities and deals that slip past the period end; treat it as a planning number, not a committed forecast.

How to use it

  1. Describe the pipeline

Enter the count of open qualified deals and their average value.

  2. Set your win rate

Move the slider or type the share of deals you historically win, ideally from the last four quarters.

  3. Add the target and cycle

Enter the revenue goal for the period and the average days from opportunity to close.

  4. Read coverage against need

Compare actual coverage with the coverage your win rate requires, and check the gap and deals needed.

Examples

10 deals of $10,000 at a 25% win rate

Open deals
10
Average deal size
10000
Win rate
25
Revenue target for the period
25000
Average sales cycle
30

Result Expected (weighted) revenue: $25,000
Total pipeline value: $100,000
Pipeline coverage (x target): 4
Coverage your win rate needs: 4
Target covered by expected revenue: 100%
Pipeline needed for the target: $100,000
Pipeline still to build: $0
Open deals needed: 10
Deals expected to close: 2.5
Expected revenue per month: $25,365

  1. Pipeline value = 10 deals x 10000 = 100000
  2. Expected revenue = 100000 x 25% = 25000
  3. Coverage = 100000 / 25000 = 4x (needed: 1 / 25% = 4x)
  4. Pipeline required = 25000 / 25% = 100000, or 10 deals
  5. Monthly run rate = 25000 x 30.44 / 30 days = 25364.58

A $100,000 pipeline weighted at 25% is worth $25,000, exactly the target, so 4x coverage is the break-even point for this team.

$1M pipeline against a $500k quarter

Open deals
40
Average deal size
25000
Win rate
20
Revenue target for the period
500000
Average sales cycle
90

Result Expected (weighted) revenue: $200,000
Total pipeline value: $1,000,000
Pipeline coverage (x target): 2
Coverage your win rate needs: 5
Target covered by expected revenue: 40%
Pipeline needed for the target: $2,500,000
Pipeline still to build: $1,500,000
Open deals needed: 100
Deals expected to close: 8
Expected revenue per month: $67,639

  1. Pipeline value = 40 deals x 25000 = 1000000
  2. Expected revenue = 1000000 x 20% = 200000
  3. Coverage = 1000000 / 500000 = 2x (needed: 1 / 20% = 5x)
  4. Pipeline required = 500000 / 20% = 2500000, or 100 deals
  5. Monthly run rate = 200000 x 30.44 / 90 days = 67638.89

At a 20% win rate the team needs 5x coverage, or $2.5M of pipeline. With 2x it can expect about $200,000, so 60 more deals of this size are needed.

12 deals of $5,000 at 50%

Open deals
12
Average deal size
5000
Win rate
50
Revenue target for the period
20000
Average sales cycle
45

Result Expected (weighted) revenue: $30,000
Total pipeline value: $60,000
Pipeline coverage (x target): 3
Coverage your win rate needs: 2
Target covered by expected revenue: 150%
Pipeline needed for the target: $40,000
Pipeline still to build: $0
Open deals needed: 8
Deals expected to close: 6
Expected revenue per month: $20,292

  1. Pipeline value = 12 deals x 5000 = 60000
  2. Expected revenue = 60000 x 50% = 30000
  3. Coverage = 60000 / 20000 = 3x (needed: 1 / 50% = 2x)
  4. Pipeline required = 20000 / 50% = 40000, or 8 deals
  5. Monthly run rate = 30000 x 30.44 / 45 days = 20291.67

Half of twelve deals closing gives six wins and $30,000, which is 150% of the $20,000 target.

How it is calculated

Expected revenue = N × S × W; Coverage = (N × S) ÷ Q; Needed coverage = 1 ÷ W; Required pipeline = Q ÷ W

N
Number of open deals
S
Average deal size
W
Win rate as a fraction (20% = 0.20)
Q
Revenue target for the period

Each open deal is treated as an independent bet that pays S with probability W, so the expected value of the pipeline is N × S × W. Coverage is the raw pipeline divided by the target; for the expected value to reach the target, coverage must be at least 1 ÷ W, which is where the familiar 3x and 4x rules come from (33% and 25% win rates). Deals needed is the required pipeline divided by S, rounded up. The monthly figure spreads expected revenue across the sales cycle using 30.44 days per month.

When not to use it

  • Forecasting a few very large deals, where one loss swings the result far from the average.
  • Pipelines whose stages carry very different close probabilities that you already track.
  • Recurring revenue forecasts that depend on renewals and churn rather than new deals.

Common mistakes

  • Counting unqualified leads as open deals, which inflates coverage.
  • Using a win rate from a different segment or deal size than the current pipeline.
  • Including deals that will close after the target period ends.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good pipeline coverage ratio?

The floor is set by your win rate: coverage must be at least 1 divided by the win rate for expected revenue to reach the target, so 3x for a 33% win rate, 4x for 25%, 5x for 20%. Many teams add a buffer above that for slipped deals.

What is weighted pipeline revenue?

It is the pipeline value multiplied by the probability of closing. A $50,000 deal at a 30% probability contributes $15,000. Summed across deals it gives the revenue you can expect on average, not the amount any single deal will bring.

Where should my win rate come from?

Divide deals won by deals closed (won plus lost) over a recent period, typically the last four quarters, for the same product and segment. Leave out deals still open, since they have no outcome yet.

Why does the calculator say I need more deals even with 3x coverage?

Three times coverage only works at a win rate of about 33%. If you close 20% of deals, 3x coverage produces 60% of the target on average, so you need 5x, and the deals-needed figure reflects that.

How is the monthly revenue figure worked out?

Expected revenue is spread over your average sales cycle. With $200,000 expected and a 90-day cycle, that is about $67,600 per month, assuming the open deals close evenly across the cycle.

Can I use stage-based probabilities instead?

Not directly; this model applies one blended win rate. For a stage-weighted forecast, multiply each stage's value by its own probability and add them up, then compare that total with the expected revenue shown here as a sanity check.
