Facebook ad cost follows the funnel: impressions = budget ÷ CPM × 1,000, clicks = impressions × CTR, and conversions = clicks × conversion share. With $500 at a $10 CPM and a 1% CTR you buy 50,000 impressions and 500 clicks, so each click costs $1.00; at 5% conversion, each result costs $20.00.

About this tool

Media buyers, small shop owners and freelancers pitching a Meta campaign all need the same answer before spending: what will this budget actually buy? This calculator takes your planned spend, the CPM you expect (best taken from a comparable past campaign in Ads Manager), your link click-through percentage and the share of visitors who convert. It returns impressions, link clicks, cost per click, conversions and cost per conversion, and lists the arithmetic behind each figure. It is a planning model, not a forecast of the auction: Meta's real CPM moves with audience size, season, placement and creative fatigue, so a projection built on last quarter's numbers can miss by a wide margin during peak periods such as November.

How to use it

  1. Enter the budget

Type the total amount you plan to spend over the campaign or reporting period.

  2. Add your CPM

Use the CPM from a similar campaign in Ads Manager; new accounts often see something between $5 and $15.

  3. Set click-through and conversion

Enter the link CTR and the percentage of clicks that convert on your landing page.

  4. Read the funnel

Cost per click and cost per conversion update as you type, with the working listed beneath.

Examples

$500 at a $10 CPM

Ad budget
500
CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions)
10
Link click-through
1
Clicks that convert
5

Result Cost per click: 1.00
Impressions: 50,000
Link clicks: 500
Conversions: 25
Cost per conversion: 20.00

  1. Impressions = 500 ÷ 10 × 1000 = 50000
  2. Clicks = 50000 × 1% = 500
  3. Cost per click = 500 ÷ 500 = 1
  4. Conversions = 500 × 5% = 25
  5. Cost per conversion = 500 ÷ 25 = 20

A small test campaign with a 1% link CTR and a 5% landing-page conversion share.

$1,000 at a $12.50 CPM

Ad budget
1000
CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions)
12.5
Link click-through
0.9
Clicks that convert
3

Result Cost per click: 1.39
Impressions: 80,000
Link clicks: 720
Conversions: 21.6
Cost per conversion: 46.30

  1. Impressions = 1000 ÷ 12.5 × 1000 = 80000
  2. Clicks = 80000 × 0.9% = 720
  3. Cost per click = 1000 ÷ 720 = 1.39
  4. Conversions = 720 × 3% = 21.6
  5. Cost per conversion = 1000 ÷ 21.6 = 46.3

A pricier audience with a 0.9% CTR: clicks cost $1.39 and each conversion about $46.

How it is calculated

Impressions = B ÷ CPM × 1000; Clicks = Impressions × CTR; CPC = B ÷ Clicks; Conversions = Clicks × CVR; CPA = B ÷ Conversions

B
Ad budget in dollars
CPM
Cost per 1,000 impressions
CTR
Link click-through, as a fraction
CVR
Share of clicks that convert, as a fraction

Meta bills most campaigns per impression, so CPM is the anchor. Dividing the budget by CPM and multiplying by 1,000 gives impressions; the click-through share turns those into link clicks, and the conversion share turns clicks into results. Cost per click and cost per conversion are simply the budget spread over each count. Because CPC equals CPM ÷ (10 × CTR%), a higher CTR lowers click cost even when CPM stays fixed.

When not to use it

  • For campaigns billed per result where Meta reports the cost directly.
  • For brand-new audiences with no CPM history, where any input is a guess.
  • For predicting reach, since impressions include repeat views by the same person.

Common mistakes

  • Using all-clicks CTR instead of link CTR, which inflates clicks.
  • Entering CPC in the CPM box; CPM is per 1,000 impressions.
  • Taking conversion share from Google Analytics sessions instead of ad clicks.
  • Ignoring frequency, so a small audience sees the same ad many times.

Frequently asked questions

What CPM should I expect on Facebook?

It varies widely by country, audience and season. Many US campaigns land somewhere between $5 and $20, and Q4 retail periods push it higher. The safest input is the CPM from your own recent campaign aimed at a similar audience.

Why is my cost per click different from Ads Manager?

Ads Manager may report CPC on all clicks, including profile taps, reactions and expanded text. This calculator uses link clicks only when you enter link CTR, which normally gives a higher and more honest cost per click.

How does CTR change my click cost?

Cost per click equals CPM divided by ten times CTR in percent. At a $10 CPM, a 1% CTR gives $1.00 per click and a 2% CTR gives $0.50, so better creative halves click cost without any change to the auction price.

Does this work for Instagram ads?

Yes. Instagram placements are bought through the same Meta ad auction and also priced by impressions, so the same funnel arithmetic applies; just use CPM and CTR figures from Instagram placements.

What counts as a conversion here?

Whatever outcome you are paying to get: a purchase, a lead form, a sign-up or an app install. Enter the share of link clicks that reach that outcome, and the tool gives the average cost of each one.

Why does the tool warn about small budgets?

Below about 100 clicks, a handful of extra or missing clicks swings CTR and conversion share sharply, and Meta's delivery is still in its learning phase. The averages are mathematically correct but say little about what the next campaign will do.
