About this tool

Universities, employers and visa offices increasingly state English requirements as a CEFR level rather than a test score, so applicants need to know where their result lands. This calculator handles the two most common cases. For IELTS it takes the Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking bands, applies the official half-band rounding to get the overall score, and reads the CEFR level from the IELTS alignment table. For Cambridge English Qualifications it reads the level straight from the Cambridge English Scale score. It also shows how far you are from the next level. One limit: IELTS only aligns bands 4.0 and above to CEFR, so lower overall bands are reported simply as below B1, and an institution may set its own cut-offs that differ from these published tables.

How it is calculated

Overall IELTS = mean of L, R, W, S rounded to the nearest 0.5 (ties at .25 and .75 round up); CEFR = band from the published alignment table

Cambridge score: Cambridge English Scale score, 80 to 230

IELTS alignment: 8.5 to 9 is C2, 7.0 to 8.0 is C1, 5.5 to 6.5 is B2 and 4.0 to 5.0 is B1. Cambridge English Scale alignment: 200 to 230 is C2, 180 to 199 C1, 160 to 179 B2, 140 to 159 B1, 120 to 139 A2, 100 to 119 A1 and 80 to 99 pre-A1. The calculator finds the band containing the score and subtracts it from the next threshold to show the gap.

When not to use it

Do not use it for TOEFL, PTE or Duolingo scores, which have their own alignment tables.
It does not replace an institution's own stated requirement, which may demand a minimum in each skill.
It cannot place you from a self-assessment; it needs an official test result.

Common mistakes

Averaging IELTS bands without the half-band rounding, which can drop 6.25 to 6.0 instead of 6.5.
Reading a Cambridge exam grade (A, B, C) as the scale score; enter the three-digit number.
Assuming an overall B2 also means B2 in Writing; check each skill band separately.

Frequently asked questions

What IELTS score equals B2?

An overall band of 5.5, 6.0 or 6.5 aligns to B2 in the table IELTS publishes. A 7.0 moves you into C1, and 5.0 or lower falls into B1.

What IELTS band do I need for C1?

Overall 7.0, 7.5 or 8.0 corresponds to C1. Bands 8.5 and 9.0 align to C2, the top of the CEFR framework.

How does IELTS round the overall band?

The four skill bands are averaged. An average ending in .25 is rounded up to the next half band and one ending in .75 to the next whole band; other averages round to the nearest half. So 6.25 becomes 6.5 and 6.75 becomes 7.0.

Why does a low IELTS band show as below B1?

IELTS publishes its CEFR alignment only from band 4.0 upward, because the test is designed to discriminate mainly between B1 and C2. Scores below 4.0 are not officially mapped to A1 or A2, so the calculator does not guess a level.

Which Cambridge exams report a Cambridge English Scale score?

A2 Key, B1 Preliminary, B2 First, C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency, in both the general and schools versions, all report results on the same 80 to 230 scale, which is what makes a direct CEFR reading possible.

Does a C1 Advanced pass always mean C1?

Not quite. On C1 Advanced, a scale score of 200 to 210 is reported at C2 level, 180 to 199 at C1, and 160 to 179 earns a B2 certificate. The scale score, not the exam name, decides the level shown here.
