A name wheel picker gives every name an equal slice and draws one at random. With four names each has a 25% chance on the first spin. Take winners off the wheel to build a speaking order with no repeats, or leave them on when the same person may win again.

About this tool

Teachers calling on students, managers choosing who presents first and streamers running a giveaway all need a draw nobody can argue with. Paste the names, one per line, or open a text file, and the picker draws as many as you ask for. The table lists each draw in order with the odds that spin had, so a full no-repeat draw doubles as a random running order. Repeated names can be merged so a person entered twice does not get two slices. The draw uses your browser's random source and is not a certified lottery, so it suits classroom and team use rather than prize draws with legal rules.

How to use it

  1. Enter the names

Type or paste one name per line, or open a .txt or .csv file from your device.

  2. Set how many to draw

Use the − and + buttons to choose one winner or up to 100 draws.

  3. Choose what happens to a winner

Take it off the wheel for a no-repeat order, or leave it on so every spin has the same odds.

  4. Read the draw order

The winner appears at the top and the table lists every draw with its odds.

Examples

Pick one of four names

Names to draw
1
After a name is drawn
Take it off the wheel
Merge repeated names
Yes

Result Winner: Chloe
Names on the wheel: 4
Chance per name, first spin: 25%
Names drawn: 1

  1. Slices on the wheel = 4
  2. Chance for each slice on the first spin = 1 ÷ 4 = 25%
  3. Each winner is removed, so the next spin has one slice fewer.

Four equal slices give each person a 25% chance on the single spin.

Speaking order for six people

6
After a name is drawn
Take it off the wheel
Merge repeated names
Yes

Result Winner: Elena
Names on the wheel: 6
Chance per name, first spin: 16.67%
Names drawn: 6

  1. Slices on the wheel = 6
  2. Chance for each slice on the first spin = 1 ÷ 6 = 16.67%
  3. Each winner is removed, so the next spin has one slice fewer.

Drawing all six without repeats gives a full random order; the odds rise as the wheel empties.

How it is calculated

P(name on a spin) = 1 ÷ slices left on the wheel

slices left
names still on the wheel at that spin
P
chance that a given remaining name is drawn

Each name is one equal slice, so a spin is a uniform random pick. When winners are removed, the wheel shrinks by one slice per spin: with six names the odds go 1/6, 1/5, 1/4 and so on, and every possible order is equally likely. When winners stay on, the odds are 1/n every time and the same name can come up twice.

When not to use it

  • Regulated raffles or lotteries usually require an audited drawing method.
  • If some people should have better odds, list them more than once and turn off merging rather than relying on equal slices.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving winners on the wheel when building a speaking order, so someone is called twice.
  • Pasting a comma-separated line, which counts as one long name instead of several.

Frequently asked questions

Is every name equally likely to win?

Yes. Each name is one slice, so with ten names each has a 10% chance on the first spin. Removing winners keeps the draw fair: every possible order is equally likely.

Can I weight one person more heavily?

Turn off Merge repeated names and enter that person on several lines. Someone listed twice among ten lines has a 20% chance on the first spin.

Why do the odds rise down the table?

When winners leave the wheel, fewer slices remain. With five names the second spin is 1 in 4, or 25%, and the last spin is certain.

How many names can the wheel hold?

Up to 1,000 lines. Blank lines are ignored, and you can draw up to 100 names in one go.

Will the same list give the same result twice?

No. Each change to the inputs runs a fresh random draw from your browser's random number source, so results differ between runs.

Are the names sent anywhere?

No. The list is processed in your browser, and a file you open is read locally rather than uploaded.
