A random name picker draws names from your list so each one has the same chance. Paste the names one per line, choose how many to pick, and the tool draws them without repeats. With eight names and one pick, every name has a 12.5% chance; picking three from twelve gives each 25%.

About this tool

Teachers choosing who answers next, streamers running a giveaway and managers assigning a rota all need a draw that nobody can accuse of favouritism. Paste or type the names, one per line, or open a text file of them, and set how many to draw. The picker shuffles the whole list and takes names from the top, so nobody is drawn twice, and it lists the draw order in a table along with the chance each name had. Repeated names can be stripped first so a name typed twice does not get double odds. One limit: the draw happens in your browser, so for a prize draw with legal rules you still need a witness or an audited process.

How to use it

  1. Enter the names

Type or paste one name per line, or use Open a text file to load a .txt or .csv list.

  2. Set how many to pick

Use the − and + buttons to draw one winner or a whole order of speakers.

  3. Decide on repeats

Keep Remove repeated names ticked so a name entered twice counts once; untick it to give extra entries extra chances.

  4. Read the draw

The picked names appear at the top and the table lists them in the order they were drawn.

Examples

One winner from eight names

Names, one per line
Amina Ben Carlos Dana Emeka Fatima Grace Hiro
How many to pick
1
Remove repeated names
Yes

Result Picked: Carlos
Names in the draw: 8
Names picked: 1
Chance per name: 12.5%

  1. Chance each name is drawn = picked ÷ entries = 1 ÷ 8 = 12.5%

With eight names in the hat each person has a one-in-eight, or 12.5%, chance of being drawn.

Three presenters from a class of twelve

Names, one per line
A1 A2 A3 A4 A5 A6 A7 A8 A9 A10 A11 A12
How many to pick
3
Remove repeated names
Yes

Result Picked: A6, A7, A1
Names in the draw: 12
Names picked: 3
Chance per name: 25%

  1. Chance each name is drawn = picked ÷ entries = 3 ÷ 12 = 25%

Drawing three of twelve without repeats gives each student a 25% chance, and the table shows the speaking order.

How it is calculated

chance per name = names picked ÷ names in the draw

names picked
how many names are drawn, capped at the list size
names in the draw
non-blank lines left after optional duplicate removal

Blank lines are ignored and each line is trimmed. The list is shuffled with a Fisher–Yates shuffle driven by the browser's random source, and the first names of the shuffled list are the result. Because names are taken without replacement, the probability that any single name is drawn equals the number picked divided by the list size.

When not to use it

  • Regulated lotteries or sweepstakes that require an audited or witnessed draw.
  • Weighted draws where some people should hold more tickets than others, unless you list them more than once and untick duplicate removal.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving a name on two lines with different capitals and expecting it to count twice while duplicate removal is on.
  • Pasting a comma-separated row instead of one name per line, which turns the whole row into a single entry.

Frequently asked questions

Can the same name come up twice in one draw?

No. The list is shuffled once and names are taken from the top, so each line can be drawn at most once per draw. Ask for more names than the list holds and every name is returned in a random order.

How are duplicate names handled?

With Remove repeated names ticked, lines that match ignoring capital letters and surrounding spaces are counted once, and a note says how many were dropped. Untick it to treat each line as its own ticket.

Does a long list make the draw less fair?

No. Every name has the same chance, equal to the number picked divided by the list size. A list of 500 with one pick gives each name 0.2%.

Can I load names from a spreadsheet?

Yes. Save the column as a .txt or .csv file with one name per row and open it with the file button; the file is read in your browser and not uploaded.

How do I give someone extra entries?

Untick Remove repeated names and put their name on as many lines as tickets they hold. A name on three of ten lines then has three times the chance of a name on one line.

Is the result different every time?

Yes. Each change to the inputs runs a fresh shuffle from the browser's random source, so the same list gives a new order on each draw.
