A random name generator pairs a randomly chosen first name with a randomly chosen surname. Here 80 popular US first names and the 50 most common Census surnames give 4,000 possible full names; pick female or male first names to halve the first-name pool to 40, or drop the surname for single names.

About this tool

Writers naming minor characters, testers filling sign-up forms with placeholder people, teachers building classroom scenarios and game masters improvising a shopkeeper all need a believable name fast. This generator draws first names from popular US baby names and surnames from the most frequent family names in the 2010 US Census, so the results sound like real people rather than fantasy inventions. You can restrict first names to female or male, choose how many names to produce, and switch the surname on or off; the counts show how large the pool is. The lists are English-language and US-centred, so they will not suit a story set in Japan, Brazil or Nigeria.

How to use it

  1. Pick the first-name set

Choose Any, Female or Male to set which first names can appear.

  2. Set how many names

Use the − and + buttons to ask for between 1 and 50 names.

  3. Keep or drop the surname

Tick Add a surname for full names, or clear it for first names alone.

  4. Copy what you need

The first name is shown on top and the full list sits in the table below it.

Examples

Result Name: Mateo Smith
Possible names: 4,000
First names in the pool: 80

  1. Possible names = 80 first names × 50 surnames = 4000
  2. Each name is drawn independently, so repeats are possible in a long list.

Eighty first names and fifty common surnames make 4,000 possible pairings, so a list of ten rarely repeats.

Result Name: Lily
Possible names: 40
First names in the pool: 40

  1. Possible names = 40 first names
  2. Each name is drawn independently, so repeats are possible in a long list.

With the surname switched off the pool is the 40 female first names, handy for naming characters or test accounts.

How it is calculated

possible names = first names in pool × surnames (50 when a surname is added, 1 otherwise)

first names in pool
40 female, 40 male, or 80 for Any
surnames
the 50 most common surnames in the 2010 US Census list

Each name is built by picking one first name uniformly at random from the chosen pool and, if requested, one surname uniformly at random from the surname list. Draws are independent, so with 4,000 pairings a list of 50 has a fair chance of one repeat. The count follows the rule of product for independent choices.

When not to use it

  • For names that fit a particular country or culture, since these lists are US-centred.
  • For a real baby name decision, where meaning and family history matter more than chance.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a generated name belongs to nobody; common pairs like James Smith are shared by thousands of real people.
  • Asking for 50 names from a single 40-name pool and expecting no repeats.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the first names come from?

They are among the most popular given names in recent US Social Security Administration baby-name rankings, 40 for girls and 40 for boys, so they read as current and familiar.

Where do the surnames come from?

They are the 50 most frequent surnames in the US Census Bureau's 2010 surname list, from Smith and Johnson down to Carter and Roberts.

Can the same name appear twice in one list?

Yes. Each name is drawn independently, so duplicates are possible, especially with surnames off, where the pool is only 40 or 80 names.

Are the generated names real people?

The parts are real and common, so many combinations belong to real people. Avoid using them in fiction in a way that could be mistaken for a specific person.

Why choose female or male first names?

A character, test persona or role-play card often needs a name that matches a stated gender. Choosing Any mixes both sets into one pool of 80.

How many different full names can it make?

With Any and a surname, 80 × 50 = 4,000. With female or male only, 40 × 50 = 2,000.
