Damage Per Second Calculator

Hit and speed

Projectiles, multi-strikes or pellets that each deal the full hit.

Speed given as
Critical hits

Total damage of a critical hit as a percent of a normal hit; 150% means ×1.5.

The chart appears with your result

Damage per second is damage per hit × hits per attack × attacks per second, scaled by the average crit factor 1 + crit chance × (multiplier − 1). A weapon hitting for 100 at 2 attacks per second with a 25% chance to crit for 150% averages 100 × 2 × 1.125 = 225 DPS.

About this tool

Comparing two weapons or two builds by their tooltip numbers rarely settles which one kills faster, because speed, multi-hit and crits all multiply together. This calculator folds them into one expected damage per second figure. Enter the damage of a single hit, how many hits each attack lands, and the speed as either attacks per second or seconds per attack, then set crit chance and the crit multiplier. The result shows DPS with and without crits, the average damage of one hit, damage per minute, and a donut chart splitting non-crit damage from the extra crits add. It reports a long-run average against a target with no armour or resistances, so it does not model enemy mitigation, damage over time, reload pauses or cooldowns.

How to use it

  1. Enter the hit

Type the damage of one hit and use the stepper for projectiles or strikes per attack.

  2. Pick the speed format

Choose attacks per second or seconds per attack, matching what your game's tooltip shows.

  3. Set crit values

Drag the crit chance slider and enter the total crit multiplier as a percent, such as 150 or 200.

  4. Read the split

Compare DPS without crits against the headline figure and check the chart for how much crits contribute.

Result Expected damage per second: 225
DPS without crits: 200
Average crit factor: 1.125
Average damage per hit: 112.5
Damage per minute: 13,500
Attacks per second: 2

  1. Attacks per second = 2
  2. Base DPS = 100 × 1 × 2 = 200
  3. Crit factor = 1 + 0.25 × (1.5 − 1) = 1.125
  4. DPS = 200 × 1.125 = 225

Crits add 12.5% on average, lifting 200 base DPS to 225.

Result Expected damage per second: 300
DPS without crits: 300
Average crit factor: 1
Average damage per hit: 50
Damage per minute: 18,000
Attacks per second: 2

  1. Attacks per second = 2
  2. Base DPS = 50 × 3 × 2 = 300
  3. Crit factor = 1 + 0 × (2 − 1) = 1
  4. DPS = 300 × 1 = 300

A 0.5 s attack time is 2 attacks per second, so 50 × 3 × 2 gives 300 DPS with no crits.

How it is calculated

DPS = D × N × A × (1 + p × (M − 1))

D
damage per hit
N
hits per attack
A
attacks per second (1 ÷ attack time, s)
p
crit chance as a fraction
M
crit multiplier as a factor, 1.5 for 150%

Each hit deals D with probability 1 − p and M × D with probability p, so its expected damage is D × (1 + p(M − 1)). Multiplying by the hits per attack and the attacks per second gives the expected damage per second. Over many attacks the observed average converges on this figure; short fights can land well above or below it.

When not to use it

  • Damage over time effects such as bleeds or burns need their own tick maths.
  • Weapons with magazines and reloads need sustained DPS that includes the reload pause.
  • Fights against armour or resistances need the post-mitigation hit as the damage input.

Common mistakes

  • Entering a crit bonus of 50% as the multiplier instead of the total 150%.
  • Typing attack time into the attacks per second box, which inverts the speed.
  • Counting a shotgun's total damage as one hit and also setting the pellet count.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 150% crit multiplier the same as +50% crit damage?

Usually yes. Games that list crit damage as a bonus (+50%) mean a crit deals 150% of a normal hit. Enter 150 here. If your game shows a base of 200% plus bonuses, add them first and enter the total.

How do I convert attack time to attacks per second?

Divide one by the attack time. An attack every 0.8 seconds is 1.25 attacks per second. You can also switch the speed format to seconds per attack and let the tool do the conversion.

Why is my in-game DPS lower than this figure?

Most games subtract armour or resistance after this point, and animations, movement or reloads interrupt attacking. That makes 225 DPS on paper a ceiling for nonstop attacks on an unarmoured dummy, not a live-fight average.

Does crit chance above 100% do anything?

Not in this model. The slider stops at 100%, where every hit crits and the average factor equals the multiplier. Some games convert overflow chance into extra damage, which you would add to the multiplier yourself.

Is more crit chance or more crit damage better?

The average factor is 1 + p(M − 1), so the two multiply. At 20% chance and 150% damage, adding 10 points of chance raises the factor from 1.10 to 1.15, while adding 50 points of crit damage raises it to 1.20. Try both in the calculator to see which upgrade is larger for your numbers.

What does hits per attack cover?

Anything that multiplies hits from a single attack: shotgun pellets, multishot arrows, double strikes or chained bounces that each deal the full hit damage. If extra hits deal reduced damage, average them into the damage per hit instead.
