Type your words and the generator adds a Unicode combining mark after each character, so the underline travels with the text into bios, captions and chats that have no formatting button. The default mark is U+0332 COMBINING LOW LINE: "ab" becomes four code units, a̲b̲.

About this tool

Instagram bios, YouTube titles, Discord names and plain-text emails strip bold and underline formatting. A combining underline survives because it is part of the text itself, not a style applied on top. This generator places one of five combining marks after every character: single low line, double low line, short macron below, dotted diaeresis below or wavy tilde below. You choose whether spaces are underlined too, which decides if the line looks continuous or broken between words. The table previews all five styles on your first 24 characters so you can compare them before copying. One limit: each mark is an extra character, so the result is roughly twice as long, and some fonts draw the marks a little offset or not at all.

How to use it

  1. Type the text

Enter the words in the box; the underlined version updates as you type.

  2. Pick a style

Choose single, double, short, dotted or wavy from the Underline style menu.

  3. Decide on spaces

Tick or clear Underline spaces too to get a continuous or word-by-word line.

  4. Copy the result

Copy the underlined text and check the output length against the platform's character limit.

Examples

Double underline across a phrase

Your text
Hi there
Underline style
Double (U+0333)
Underline spaces too
Yes

Result Underlined text: H̳i̳ ̳t̳h̳e̳r̳e̳
Characters in: 8
Marks added: 8
Output length (code units): 16
Combining mark: U+0333

  1. Split the text into 8 visible characters (graphemes).
  2. Added U+0333 after 8 of them.
  3. Output length = 16 UTF-16 code units, which is what most character limits count.

Every character, including the space, gets U+0333, so the line runs unbroken under both words and the length doubles to 16.

Words only, spaces left plain

Your text
Read me
Underline style
Single (U+0332)
Underline spaces too
No

Result Underlined text: R̲e̲a̲d̲ m̲e̲
Characters in: 7
Marks added: 6
Output length (code units): 13
Combining mark: U+0332

  1. Split the text into 7 visible characters (graphemes).
  2. Added U+0332 after 6 of them, skipping spaces.
  3. Output length = 13 UTF-16 code units, which is what most character limits count.

With spaces excluded, six letters get a low line and the gap between the words stays clear.

Accented word, wavy style

Your text
Café
Underline style
Wavy (U+0330)
Underline spaces too
Yes

Result Underlined text: C̰a̰f̰ḛ́
Characters in: 4
Marks added: 4
Output length (code units): 8
Combining mark: U+0330

  1. Split the text into 4 visible characters (graphemes).
  2. Added U+0330 after 4 of them.
  3. Output length = 8 UTF-16 code units, which is what most character limits count.

The é counts as one character, so it gets one tilde-below mark like the other letters.

How it is calculated

output = for each character c: c + mark; output length ≈ 2 × input length

c
one visible character (grapheme), so an accented letter or emoji is treated as a single unit
mark
the combining code point for the chosen style, for example U+0332 for a single underline

Combining marks have no width of their own; a font draws them under the character in front of them. Splitting by graphemes rather than raw code units keeps a mark from landing between an emoji and its modifier. Line breaks are left alone so multi-line text keeps its shape.

When not to use it

  • In documents or web pages that support real formatting, where an underline style is cleaner and searchable.
  • For usernames or anything a screen reader must announce clearly, since some readers spell out each mark.
  • Where search or matching matters, because the underlined word no longer matches the plain word.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting that the marks count toward character limits, which can cut off a bio halfway.
  • Judging the look in one app only; the same marks can render differently on Android, iOS and Windows.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the underlined text take up twice as many characters?

Each underline is a separate combining character placed after a letter. A 20-letter name becomes 40 code units with spaces underlined, and platforms that count code units see all 40.

Which underline style shows up on the most devices?

The single low line, U+0332, has the widest font support. Double, dotted and wavy marks are present in common system fonts but are more likely to look slightly misaligned.

Can I underline Arabic, accented or emoji text?

Yes. The text is split into visible characters first, so é or an emoji with a skin-tone modifier receives one mark. How it looks depends on the font, and marks under connected Arabic letters are often drawn unevenly.

Why is there a gap in the line between words?

With Underline spaces too switched off, spaces get no mark, so each word is underlined separately. Turn it on for one unbroken line.

Will search engines or hashtags read underlined words?

Usually not as the plain word. The combining marks are part of the text, so a hashtag or search term written this way is a different string from the same word without marks.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. The combining marks are added by script running in your browser, so the text never leaves your device and nothing is stored after you close the page.
