Pick the date and time where you are, the city you are converting from and the city you want. The converter finds the UTC moment and applies each city's offset for that date. Example: 12:00 UTC on 15 July 2024 is 08:00 in New York, because Eastern Daylight Time runs four hours behind UTC.

About this tool

Travellers checking a hotel check-in window, people booking a call across continents and anyone reading an arrival time printed in another city's clock all face the same problem: the offset changes with the season. This converter takes a date and time in one of 30 cities, works out the matching UTC instant, then reads it out in the second city with that city's offset on that exact date. It shows the destination date as well, so an overnight jump to the next or previous day is obvious, plus the gap in hours and the UTC equivalent. Daylight-saving rules are built in for the United States, the European Union and UK, Sydney and Auckland. The limit: the city list is fixed, and rule changes announced by governments after these rules were written are not reflected.

How to use it

  1. Set the date and time

Enter the calendar date and the clock time as they read in the starting city. The date matters because it decides whether daylight time applies.

  2. Choose the starting city

Pick the city whose clock your time belongs to, or UTC if you have a timestamp from a server log or flight system.

  3. Choose the destination

Pick the city you want the time in. The result, its date and the day shift update straight away.

  4. Check the working

The steps list each offset used and whether it was standard or daylight time, so you can confirm the conversion.

Examples

12:00 UTC in New York, July

Date where you are
2024-07-15
Local time
12:00
Convert from
UTC
Convert to
New York

Result Time in the destination city: 08:00
Date there: Mon 15 Jul 2024
Calendar day: Same day
Destination minus origin: −4 h
Same moment in UTC: 12:00 UTC, Mon 15 Jul 2024

  1. UTC on Mon 15 Jul 2024 uses UTC+00:00 (standard time)
  2. UTC = 12:00 − (+00:00) = 12:00 on Mon 15 Jul 2024
  3. New York at that instant uses UTC−04:00 (daylight time)
  4. New York time = 12:00 + (−04:00) = 08:00 on Mon 15 Jul 2024

In mid-July New York keeps Eastern Daylight Time, four hours behind UTC, so a noon UTC call starts at 8 in the morning there.

9:00 in New York to London, January

Date where you are
2024-01-15
Local time
09:00
Convert from
New York
Convert to
London

Result Time in the destination city: 14:00
Date there: Mon 15 Jan 2024
Calendar day: Same day
Destination minus origin: +5 h
Same moment in UTC: 14:00 UTC, Mon 15 Jan 2024

  1. New York on Mon 15 Jan 2024 uses UTC−05:00 (standard time)
  2. UTC = 09:00 − (−05:00) = 14:00 on Mon 15 Jan 2024
  3. London at that instant uses UTC+00:00 (standard time)
  4. London time = 14:00 + (+00:00) = 14:00 on Mon 15 Jan 2024

Both cities are on standard time in January, so the gap is the full five hours: 09:00 EST is 14:00 GMT.

22:00 Los Angeles to Tokyo, 10 March

Date where you are
2024-03-10
Local time
22:00
Convert from
Los Angeles
Convert to
Tokyo

Result Time in the destination city: 14:00
Date there: Mon 11 Mar 2024
Calendar day: Next day
Destination minus origin: +16 h
Same moment in UTC: 05:00 UTC, Mon 11 Mar 2024

  1. Los Angeles on Sun 10 Mar 2024 uses UTC−07:00 (daylight time)
  2. UTC = 22:00 − (−07:00) = 05:00 on Mon 11 Mar 2024
  3. Tokyo at that instant uses UTC+09:00 (standard time)
  4. Tokyo time = 05:00 + (+09:00) = 14:00 on Mon 11 Mar 2024

US clocks moved forward at 02:00 that morning, so Los Angeles is on UTC−7; Tokyo, at UTC+9 with no daylight time, is 16 hours ahead and already on Monday afternoon.

How it is calculated

destination time = local time − origin offset + destination offset

local time
the date and clock time you entered in the origin city
origin offset
the origin city's UTC offset on that date, standard plus one hour if daylight time is in force
destination offset
the destination city's UTC offset at the same instant

Every civil time is UTC shifted by an offset. Subtracting the origin offset gives the single UTC instant; adding the destination offset gives its clock time. Daylight time is decided per city: the US switches on the second Sunday of March and back on the first Sunday of November at 02:00 local; the EU and UK switch at 01:00 UTC on the last Sundays of March and October; Sydney runs daylight time from the first Sunday of October to the first Sunday of April, Auckland from the last Sunday of September to the first Sunday of April.

When not to use it

  • Dates before 2007 in US cities, when different daylight-saving dates applied.
  • Cities not in the list whose offset differs from the nearest listed city, such as Adelaide or Tehran.
  • Legal deadlines where a court or contract names its own reference clock.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the gap between two cities is the same all year; London to New York is four hours for a few weeks each spring and autumn.
  • Forgetting the date changes when crossing many hours, so a 22:00 departure can land on the next calendar day.
  • Treating Phoenix like Denver in summer; Arizona does not observe daylight time.
  • Choosing a time inside the skipped hour on the night clocks spring forward.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the gap between New York and London change during the year?

The United States and Europe change their clocks on different Sundays. US daylight time starts on the second Sunday of March, while the UK starts on the last Sunday of March, so for two or three weeks the gap is four hours instead of five. The same happens in autumn between late October and early November.

How are half-hour and quarter-hour zones handled?

Offsets are stored in minutes, so Mumbai at UTC+05:30 and Kathmandu at UTC+05:45 convert exactly. Between the two, 10:00 in Mumbai is 10:15 in Kathmandu, a gap shown as +0.25 h.

What does the calendar day line mean?

It compares the destination date with the date you entered. A Los Angeles evening often becomes the next day in Tokyo or Sydney, and an Auckland morning is frequently the previous day in Honolulu. Flight arrival times printed on tickets are local, so this line tells you which date to read them against.

Does the southern hemisphere use daylight time in the opposite months?

Yes. Sydney and Auckland move their clocks forward in September or October and back in April, during their summer. That means the Sydney to London gap ranges from 9 to 11 hours across the year as the two cities switch in opposite directions.

Which cities here never change their clocks?

Honolulu, Phoenix, Mexico City, São Paulo, Lagos, Johannesburg, Istanbul, Moscow, Riyadh, Dubai, Karachi, Mumbai, Kathmandu, Dhaka, Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong and Tokyo keep one offset all year under current rules. Mexico ended daylight time in most of the country in 2022 and Brazil in 2019.

What happens to a time inside the hour skipped in spring?

A time such as 02:30 on the US spring-forward Sunday does not exist on local clocks. The converter treats it as a daylight-time reading and shows a warning whenever either city observes daylight time, so double-check any booking made for that night.
