Instagram ad cost works out from CPM: impressions equal budget divided by CPM, times 1,000. A $500 budget at an $10 CPM buys 50,000 impressions; at a 1% click-through rate that is 500 clicks costing $1.00 each, and at a 2% conversion rate 10 sales at $50.00 each.

About this tool

Instagram bills most campaigns by impressions, so the price you pay per click or per sale depends on three numbers: what a thousand impressions cost in your audience, how often people tap the ad, and how often those visitors go on to buy. This calculator takes a total budget, a run length and those three rates and returns the expected impressions, link clicks, cost per click, conversions, cost per conversion and daily spend, with the working shown. Use your own Ads Manager history for the rates when you have it; industry averages vary widely by country, placement (Feed, Stories, Reels) and season. The result is a planning estimate: the auction sets the real CPM day by day, and frequency caps or a small audience can stop a budget from spending in full.

How to use it

  1. Enter the budget

Type the total you plan to spend and set the number of days with the stepper to see the daily spend.

  2. Set the CPM

Enter the cost per 1,000 impressions from past campaigns or Ads Manager's estimate for your audience.

  3. Tune the two rates

Drag the click-through and conversion sliders, or type exact percentages in the boxes beside them.

  4. Read the funnel

Impressions lead the result; clicks, cost per click, conversions and cost per conversion follow, with the arithmetic listed below.

Examples

$500 over 10 days at a $10 CPM

Total budget
500
Campaign length
10
CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions)
10
Click-through rate
1
Conversion rate
2

Result Estimated impressions: 50,000
Estimated link clicks: 500
Cost per click: $1.00
Estimated conversions: 10
Cost per conversion: $50.00
Daily spend: $50.00
Impressions per day: 5,000

  1. Impressions = $500.00 ÷ 10 × 1,000 = 50,000
  2. Clicks = 50,000 × 1% = 500
  3. Cost per click = budget ÷ clicks = $1.00
  4. Conversions = clicks × 2% = 10

A small test campaign. At 1% click-through and 2% conversion, each sale costs about $50.

$3,000 for a month at a $6 CPM

Total budget
3000
Campaign length
30
CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions)
6
Click-through rate
0.8
Conversion rate
3

Result Estimated impressions: 500,000
Estimated link clicks: 4,000
Cost per click: $0.75
Estimated conversions: 120
Cost per conversion: $25.00
Daily spend: $100.00
Impressions per day: 16,667

  1. Impressions = $3,000.00 ÷ 6 × 1,000 = 500,000
  2. Clicks = 500,000 × 0.8% = 4,000
  3. Cost per click = budget ÷ clicks = $0.75
  4. Conversions = clicks × 3% = 120

A cheaper audience lowers CPM; 0.8% click-through gives 4,000 clicks and 120 conversions at 3%.

How it is calculated

Impressions = B ÷ CPM × 1,000; Clicks = Impressions × CTR; Conversions = Clicks × CVR; CPC = B ÷ Clicks; CPA = B ÷ Conversions

B
Total ad budget in dollars
CPM
Cost per 1,000 impressions
CTR
Share of impressions that become link clicks
CVR
Share of clicks that become a purchase, lead or registration

The model is a simple funnel. Budget divided by CPM gives the number of thousand-impression blocks bought. Click-through rate turns impressions into visits, and conversion rate turns visits into results. Cost per click and cost per conversion are the budget spread over those counts, so a higher CTR lowers both even when CPM is unchanged.

When not to use it

  • Campaigns bought on a cost-per-click or cost-per-result bid need the bid itself, not a CPM model.
  • Organic posts and influencer fees are priced differently and are not covered.
  • Very small audiences may saturate, so the budget will not deliver the full impression count.

Common mistakes

  • Entering CTR (all) instead of link CTR inflates the click estimate.
  • Using a Feed CPM for a Reels or Stories campaign, where prices often differ.
  • Treating a conversion rate from Google search traffic as typical for cold Instagram audiences.
  • Forgetting that Ads Manager reports CPM in your account currency.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an Instagram ad cost per day?

Meta lets you set the daily budget yourself, with a low minimum, so there is no fixed price. What changes is what that spend buys: divide the daily figure by your CPM and multiply by 1,000 to get daily impressions. The calculator shows both the daily spend and the impressions it should deliver.

Where do I find my CPM and CTR?

In Meta Ads Manager, add the CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions) and CTR (link click-through rate) columns to the campaign table. Averages over the last 30 to 90 days of a similar audience are a better input than a single day, which can swing with the auction.

Why is my cost per click different from the result here?

Ads Manager computes cost per link click from actual delivery, while this tool assumes the CPM and CTR you enter hold for the whole budget. If the real CTR drops as frequency rises, or CPM climbs late in a campaign, the reported CPC will end up higher than the estimate.

Do Stories and Reels cost the same as Feed ads?

Not usually. Each placement has its own auction, so CPM and click-through rate differ. Run the calculator separately with the rates for each placement if you split budget between them.

What counts as a conversion?

Whatever event you optimise for: a purchase, a lead form, an app install or a newsletter subscription. Use the conversion rate from that same event, measured from link clicks, so the cost per conversion lines up with what Ads Manager reports as cost per result.

How do I lower cost per conversion?

The formula shows three levers. A lower CPM (broader or less contested audience), a higher click-through rate (stronger creative and hook) and a higher conversion rate (a faster, clearer landing page) each cut the cost per sale. Doubling CTR halves CPC and CPA at the same CPM.
