Twitter (X) ad cost depends on the billing model. At a CPM bid, impressions = budget ÷ CPM × 1,000; at a CPC bid, clicks = budget ÷ CPC. For example, $500 at a $10 CPM buys 50,000 impressions, and at a 1% click-through rate that becomes about 500 clicks, or $1.00 per click.

About this tool

Media buyers and small business owners planning promoted posts on X (formerly Twitter) usually know two things: how much they can spend and roughly what the auction charges. This calculator turns those into the numbers a plan needs. Pick per-thousand or per-click billing, enter the budget and bid, then set the click-through and conversion rates you expect. It returns impressions, link clicks, the effective CPM and CPC whichever way you are billed, the conversions you can expect and what each one costs, with the working laid out line by line. The figures are a plan, not a forecast: real auctions price by audience, placement and competition, so delivery rarely spends exactly at your bid, and rates from your own past campaigns beat any industry average.

How to use it

  1. Choose the billing model

Select CPM if the campaign pays per 1,000 impressions, or CPC if it pays per link click.

  2. Enter budget and bid

Type the total campaign budget and the CPM or CPC you expect to pay.

  3. Set expected rates

Move the click-through and conversion rate sliders, or type exact values in the boxes beside them.

  4. Read the plan

Check clicks, impressions, effective CPM and CPC, conversions and cost per conversion, plus the worked lines below.

Examples

$500 at a $10 CPM

Billing model
Per 1,000 views (CPM)
Campaign budget
500
Cost per 1,000 impressions
10
Click-through rate
1
Conversion rate
2

Result Estimated link clicks: 500
Impressions: 50,000
Effective CPM: $10.00
Effective cost per click: $1.00
Conversions: 10
Cost per conversion: $50.00

  1. Impressions = $500 ÷ $10 × 1,000 = 50000
  2. Clicks = 50000 × 1% = 500
  3. Effective CPM = $10, effective CPC = $1
  4. Conversions = 500 × 2% = 10

A $500 awareness push billed per thousand views at $10 reaches 50,000 impressions; a 1% click-through rate turns that into about 500 visits.

$300 at $0.60 per click

Per click (CPC)
Campaign budget

Result Estimated link clicks: 500
Impressions: 25,000
Effective CPM: $12.00
Effective cost per click: $0.60
Conversions: 25
Cost per conversion: $12.00

  1. Clicks = $300 ÷ $0.6 = 500
  2. Impressions = 500 ÷ 2% = 25000
  3. Effective CPM = $12, effective CPC = $0.6
  4. Conversions = 500 × 5% = 25

Billed per click, $300 buys 500 clicks. With a 2% click-through rate, the post needs about 25,000 impressions to deliver them.

How it is calculated

Impressions = Budget ÷ CPM × 1,000; Clicks = Impressions × CTR; for CPC billing, Clicks = Budget ÷ CPC and Impressions = Clicks ÷ CTR; Conversions = Clicks × CR

Budget
Total spend on the campaign, in dollars
CPM
Cost per 1,000 impressions
CPC
Cost per link click
CTR
Click-through rate, clicks as a share of impressions
CR
Conversion rate, conversions as a share of clicks

Whichever unit the campaign is billed in, the budget is divided by that price to get the billed volume. The click-through rate then links impressions and clicks in either direction, so both effective prices can be shown side by side: effective CPC = Budget ÷ Clicks and effective CPM = Budget ÷ Impressions × 1,000. Cost per conversion is the budget divided by expected conversions.

When not to use it

  • Do not treat the output as a delivery promise; the X Ads auction decides actual reach.
  • It does not model follower, video-view or app-install objectives with their own billing units.
  • For campaigns that cap frequency or daily spend, delivery may stop short of the budget.

Common mistakes

  • Entering CTR as a decimal such as 0.01 when the field expects 1 for one percent.
  • Using an engagement rate, which counts likes and replies, in place of link click-through rate.
  • Comparing a CPM bid with another platform's CPC without converting through the click-through rate.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to advertise on X (Twitter)?

There is no fixed price; the ads auction sets it. You choose a budget, and costs are charged per impression, click or other action depending on the objective. Plug the CPM or CPC your account reports into this calculator to see what a given budget delivers.

What is the difference between CPM and CPC billing?

CPM charges for every 1,000 times the ad is shown, whether or not anyone clicks. CPC charges only when someone clicks the link. With a 1% click-through rate, a $10 CPM works out to $1.00 per click, so the two can be compared directly.

What click-through rate should I assume?

Use the link click-through rate from your own previous promoted posts if you have one. Without history, plan around a cautious figure such as 0.5% to 1% and test, since rates vary widely by audience, creative and offer.

Why does the effective CPC change when I alter the CTR under CPM billing?

Under CPM billing you pay for views. A higher click-through rate gets more clicks from the same paid views, so the same budget is spread over more clicks and each click costs less.

How is cost per conversion worked out?

Clicks are multiplied by the conversion rate to estimate conversions, and the budget is divided by that count. If the conversion rate is zero, there is nothing to divide by, so the result says no conversions instead of a price.

Does the budget include taxes or agency fees?

No. Enter only the amount that goes to media. If an agency fee or sales tax sits on top, subtract it before entering the budget so the delivered volume is not overstated.
