LinkedIn ad cost is clicks × CPC bid, or impressions ÷ 1,000 × CPM bid. For example, 200 clicks at a $5.50 CPC cost $1,100; at a 0.5% click-through rate that needs about 40,000 impressions, and a 5% conversion rate yields 10 leads at $110 each.

About this tool

B2B marketers planning a LinkedIn campaign usually start from one of two numbers: the bid LinkedIn suggests in Campaign Manager, or the volume of clicks or impressions the plan calls for. This calculator turns either into a spend figure, then works the other way through your click-through rate to show how many impressions a click goal requires, or how many clicks an impression buy should return. Add a lead conversion rate and it reports expected leads and cost per lead, the number most sales teams judge a campaign by. The effective CPC and CPM let you compare the two bidding models on equal terms. One limit: real LinkedIn auctions charge at or below your bid and vary by audience size, seniority targeting and ad format, so treat the result as a planning ceiling rather than an invoice.

How to use it

  1. Pick the bidding model

Choose cost per click for traffic and lead campaigns, or cost per 1,000 views for awareness buys.

  2. Enter the bid and the volume

Type the CPC bid and target clicks, or the CPM bid and target impressions.

  3. Set click-through and conversion rates

Use your past campaign averages if you have them; the defaults reflect common sponsored-content figures.

  4. Read spend and cost per lead

The total, the implied volume on the other side, effective CPC and CPM, and the working all update as you type.

Examples

50,000 impressions at a $30 CPM

Bidding model
Cost per 1,000 views
CPM bid
30
Target impressions
50000
Click-through rate
0.5
Lead conversion rate
10

Result Estimated campaign cost: $1,500.00
Clicks: 250
Impressions: 50,000
Effective CPC: $6.00
Effective CPM: $30.00
Expected leads: 25
Cost per lead: $60.00

  1. Cost = 50,000 ÷ 1,000 × $30 = $1500
  2. Clicks = 50,000 × 0.5% = 250
  3. Leads = 250 × 10% = 25
  4. Cost per lead = $1500 ÷ 25 = $60

A brand-awareness push bought by the thousand. At a 0.5% click-through rate it brings 250 visits, and a 10% form-fill rate turns those into 25 leads.

200 clicks at a $5.50 CPC

Bidding model
Cost per click
CPC bid
5.5
Target clicks
200
Click-through rate
0.5
Lead conversion rate

Result Estimated campaign cost: $1,100.00
Clicks: 200
Impressions: 40,000
Effective CPC: $5.50
Effective CPM: $27.50
Expected leads: 10
Cost per lead: $110.00

  1. Cost = 200 × $5.5 = $1100
  2. Impressions = 200 ÷ 0.5% = 40000
  3. Leads = 200 × 5% = 10
  4. Cost per lead = $1100 ÷ 10 = $110

A lead-gen campaign paying per click. Reaching 200 clicks at 0.5% CTR needs about 40,000 impressions, and 10 leads cost $110 each.

How it is calculated

Cost = Clicks × CPC, or Cost = Impressions ÷ 1,000 × CPM; Clicks = Impressions × CTR; Leads = Clicks × CR; CPL = Cost ÷ Leads

CPC
Bid paid per click, in dollars
CPM
Bid paid per 1,000 impressions, in dollars
CTR
Share of impressions that become clicks
CR
Share of clicks that become leads
CPL
Cost per lead

The bidding model sets which volume you pay for. Under CPC the number of clicks fixes spend and the click-through rate back-calculates the impressions needed. Under CPM the impression count fixes spend and the click-through rate predicts clicks. Effective CPC and CPM divide the same spend by the other volume, so a $30 CPM at 0.5% CTR equals a $6.00 effective CPC.

When not to use it

  • Do not treat the figure as an invoice, because LinkedIn's second-price auction often charges below the bid.
  • It does not model conversation ads billed per send or video ads billed per view.
  • Daily pacing and audience saturation over a long flight are outside its scope.

Common mistakes

  • Typing CTR as a fraction such as 0.005 when the field expects a percentage like 0.5.
  • Comparing a CPC bid with a CPM bid directly instead of comparing their effective CPC.
  • Using a website conversion rate for Lead Gen Forms, which usually convert far higher.

Frequently asked questions

How much do LinkedIn ads cost per click?

LinkedIn reports no fixed price; the auction sets it. Published benchmarks for sponsored content commonly fall between about $5 and $10 per click in North America, higher for senior or narrow audiences. Use the suggested bid range shown in Campaign Manager for your audience as the starting CPC here.

Is CPC or CPM cheaper on LinkedIn?

It depends on your click-through rate. Divide the CPM bid by 1,000 times the CTR to get an effective CPC. At a $30 CPM and 0.5% CTR that is $6.00 per click, so a CPC bid below $6 would be cheaper per click; a stronger ad with 1% CTR halves the CPM-based figure to $3.00.

What click-through rate is normal for LinkedIn sponsored content?

Single-image sponsored content often sits around 0.4% to 0.6%. Text ads run far lower, often below 0.1%, while message-based formats are measured by open rate instead. Enter your own historic CTR when you have one, since targeting and creative move it a lot.

What is the minimum budget for a LinkedIn campaign?

LinkedIn sets a minimum daily budget of around $10 for most campaigns, with minimum bids that vary by format. The calculator warns when the whole plan costs less than that daily floor, as such a campaign may barely deliver.

How is cost per lead worked out?

Spend is divided by expected leads, and leads are clicks multiplied by your conversion rate. With $1,100 spent on 200 clicks and a 5% conversion rate you get 10 leads, so each costs $110.

Why does the impressions figure change when I edit the CTR in CPC mode?

In CPC mode clicks are fixed, so the impressions needed to produce them equal clicks divided by the click-through rate. A lower CTR means LinkedIn must show the ad more times to reach the same clicks, which matters for audience size and frequency.
