A this or that generator gives you quick two-choice questions such as Beach or Mountains? Pick a theme, choose how many questions you want, and it draws pairs at random without repeats. With your own list, every pair of options can appear: five options give 5 × 4 ÷ 2 = 10 possible questions.

About this tool

Two-choice questions are a staple of icebreakers, classroom warm-ups, social posts and long car rides, but coming up with fresh ones on the spot is harder than it sounds. This generator draws from 41 built-in pairs split into food and drink, travel and lifestyle themes, or builds questions from a list you type in, one option per line. It reports how many distinct pairs the current choice holds and lists up to 20 questions with no pair repeated, and the order inside each question is shuffled too. The built-in sets are small, so a long session will start to recycle pairs; adding your own list keeps things fresh.

How to use it

  1. Pick a theme

Choose Mixed, Food and drink, Travel, Lifestyle, or My own options.

  2. Add your options

With My own options, type one item per line; duplicates are ignored regardless of capitals.

  3. Set the number of questions

Use the minus and plus buttons to draw between 1 and 20 questions.

  4. Read the list

Each drawn question appears on its own line in the result, with the pair counts beneath it.

How it is calculated

distinct pairs = n × (n − 1) ÷ 2

n
number of different options in your list

For your own list, every unordered pair of different options is built, which is the binomial coefficient C(n, 2). The pool is shuffled and the first pairs are taken, so no pair appears twice in one draw. Each pair is then flipped with a 50 percent chance, so neither option is always shown first. Built-in themes use a fixed list of hand-written pairs instead.

When not to use it

  • For picking one winner from a list, a random picker or wheel is more direct.
  • For questions that need three or more answers, a poll or quiz format fits better.

Common mistakes

  • Typing options on one line separated by commas, which counts as a single option.
  • Asking for 20 questions from a small list and expecting no overlap in the options themselves.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions can my own list make?

Every pair of different options counts once, so n options give n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 questions. Four options give 6, ten give 45 and twenty give 190.

Can the same pair come up twice in one draw?

No. The pairs are shuffled and taken in order, so each one appears at most once per draw. If you ask for more questions than there are pairs, you get every pair once and a note says so.

Why does Pizza sometimes come before Tacos and sometimes after?

Each pair is flipped at random, so neither option is always the first one read out. That reduces the habit some people have of picking whichever option they hear first.

Are repeated options in my list counted twice?

No. Lines are trimmed and compared without regard to capitals, so Pizza and pizza count as one option. Blank lines are skipped.

What are good ways to use these questions?

They work as icebreakers at the start of a meeting or lesson, prompts for social media stories, party games where people move to one side of the room, and conversation starters on long trips.

Is anything I type sent anywhere?

No. The list is paired and shuffled in your browser, and nothing is stored after you leave the page.
