Click into the box and press the spacebar; every press adds one space, and the counter totals them as you go. Enter how long you pressed and it gives your rate: 50 presses in 10 seconds is 5 per second, or 300 per minute. Paste any text instead to count its spaces and find double-space gaps.

About this tool

Spacebar clicking challenges are a quick way to test finger speed, and the number people compare is presses per second. This counter treats each space character typed into the box as one press, so the total matches what you hit as long as you stay in the box. Set the seconds you spent and it works out your rate per second and per minute. It also doubles as a text checker: paste a draft to see how many spaces it holds, the longest unbroken run, and how many places use two or more spaces in a row, a common leftover from typewriter habits. Tabs and line breaks are listed separately. There is no built-in stopwatch, so the rate is only as good as the time you enter, and keyboard auto-repeat from holding the key down adds spaces you did not tap.

How to use it

  1. Press in the box

Click the text box and tap the spacebar, or paste text whose spaces you want counted.

  2. Enter the time

Type the number of seconds you spent pressing; 10 is filled in to start.

  3. Read your rate

The total, presses per second and per minute, and the space-run counts update as you type.

Result Spacebar presses (spaces): 8
Presses per second: 2
Presses per minute: 120
Longest run of spaces: 1
Runs of 2+ spaces: 0
Words: 9
Tabs: 0
Line breaks: 0

  1. Spaces counted: 8 (each spacebar press adds one U+0020 character).
  2. Presses per second = 8 ÷ 4 s = 2.
  3. Longest unbroken run of spaces: 1; runs of two or more: 0.

Nine words need eight spaces between them, so eight presses over four seconds is two per second.

50 presses in 10 seconds

Result Spacebar presses (spaces): 50
Presses per second: 5
Presses per minute: 300
Longest run of spaces: 50
Runs of 2+ spaces: 1
Words: 0
Tabs: 0
Line breaks: 0

  1. Spaces counted: 50 (each spacebar press adds one U+0020 character).
  2. Presses per second = 50 ÷ 10 s = 5.
  3. Longest unbroken run of spaces: 50; runs of two or more: 1.

Fifty presses of the spacebar in ten seconds is 5 per second, or 300 per minute at that pace.

Presses per second: 5
Presses per minute: 300
Longest run of spaces: 2
Runs of 2+ spaces: 2
Words: 4
Tabs: 0
Line breaks: 0

  1. Spaces counted: 5 (each spacebar press adds one U+0020 character).
  2. Presses per second = 5 ÷ 1 s = 5.
  3. Longest unbroken run of spaces: 2; runs of two or more: 2.

Two sentence gaps use two spaces each, so the text has five spaces and two double-space runs.

How it is calculated

presses = count of U+0020 characters; rate per second = presses ÷ seconds; per minute = rate × 60

presses
number of ordinary space characters in the box
seconds
the pressing time you enter

Only the ordinary space character produced by the spacebar is counted. Non-breaking spaces pasted from web pages or word processors are reported in a warning but left out, and tabs and line breaks get their own counts. A run is an unbroken sequence of spaces; any run of two or more is counted as a double-space gap.

When not to use it

  • For a timed contest with an official clock, since this page does not time you.
  • For checking platform character limits, where a character counter fits better.

Common mistakes

  • Holding the spacebar down, which lets keyboard auto-repeat add spaces faster than you can tap.
  • Leaving the default 10 seconds in place after pressing for a different length of time.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good spacebar presses-per-second score?

Casual tappers usually land somewhere around 5 to 7 presses per second over ten seconds. Sustained double-digit rates generally need alternating fingers or thumbs, and short bursts are always faster than long ones.

Why is my count higher than the number of times I tapped?

If the key is held down even briefly, the operating system's auto-repeat inserts extra spaces. Tap and release cleanly, or lower the repeat rate in your keyboard settings.

Does it count non-breaking spaces?

No. Non-breaking spaces, which often arrive when copying from websites or word processors, are not spacebar presses. The tool counts them and shows a warning so you know they are there.

How can I find double spaces in a document?

Paste the text into the box. The runs of 2+ spaces figure tells you how many gaps contain more than one space, and the longest run shows the worst case.

Does the box keep my text?

No. Counting happens in your browser and the text is not saved once you leave the page, so paste private drafts freely.
