Hit rate is hits divided by attempts, times 100. Land 50 of 100 swings and your hit rate is 50%. From that rate, the chance of connecting at least once in the next three swings is 1 − 0.5³ = 87.5%, while the chance all three connect is only 0.5³ = 12.5%.

About this tool

Players tracking a build, a weapon roll or their own aim usually log two numbers: how many attacks connected and how many were thrown. This calculator turns that tally into a hit rate and a miss rate, then projects it forward. Set how many attacks you plan to make next and it reports the expected number of hits, the chance that at least one lands, the chance that all of them land, and how many attempts you need for a 95% chance of at least one hit. Those projections treat each attempt as independent with the same probability, which suits dice rolls and fixed accuracy stats but not games with pseudo-random distribution, streak protection or accuracy that changes with range and movement.

How to use it

  1. Enter hits landed

Type the number of attacks, shots or rolls that connected.

  2. Enter total attempts

Type every attempt made, including misses. Hits cannot exceed this number.

  3. Set upcoming attempts

Use the − and + buttons to choose how many attacks you plan next; the odds update as you change it.

  4. Read the projections

Compare the at-least-one and every-hit chances, and check the working lines to see each formula with your numbers.

Examples

50 hits from 100 swings, next 3 swings

Hits landed
50
Total attempts
100
Upcoming attempts
3

Result Hit rate: 50%
Misses: 50
Miss rate: 50%
Expected hits in upcoming attempts: 1.5
Chance of at least one hit: 87.5%
Chance every attempt hits: 12.5%
Attempts for a 95% chance of a hit: 5

  1. Hit rate p = 50 ÷ 100 = 0.5 (50%)
  2. Expected hits in 3 = 3 × 0.5 = 1.5
  3. P(at least one hit) = 1 − (1 − 0.5)^3 = 87.5%
  4. P(every attempt hits) = 0.5^3 = 12.5%

A 50% hit rate gives an 87.5% chance of landing at least one of the next three attacks, but only 12.5% of landing all three.

120 hits from 160 shots, a two-shot burst

Hits landed
120
Total attempts
160
Upcoming attempts
2

Result Hit rate: 75%
Misses: 40
Miss rate: 25%
Expected hits in upcoming attempts: 1.5
Chance of at least one hit: 93.75%
Chance every attempt hits: 56.25%
Attempts for a 95% chance of a hit: 3

  1. Hit rate p = 120 ÷ 160 = 0.75 (75%)
  2. Expected hits in 2 = 2 × 0.75 = 1.5
  3. P(at least one hit) = 1 − (1 − 0.75)^2 = 93.75%
  4. P(every attempt hits) = 0.75^2 = 56.25%

At 75% accuracy a double tap connects at least once 93.75% of the time, and both shots land 56.25% of the time.

How it is calculated

p = H ÷ A; P(at least one) = 1 − (1 − p)^n; P(all) = p^n; E = n × p

H
hits landed
A
total attempts
p
hit rate as a fraction
n
upcoming attempts
E
expected hits in the upcoming attempts

The observed hit rate estimates the per-attempt probability. Assuming independent attempts, the number of hits in n tries follows a binomial distribution. The chance of no hit at all is (1 − p)^n, so its complement gives at least one hit. The attempts needed for 95% is the smallest n where (1 − p)^n is at most 0.05, found as ln 0.05 ÷ ln(1 − p) rounded up.

When not to use it

  • Games that use pseudo-random distribution or bad-luck protection break the independence assumption.
  • Accuracy that depends on range, recoil or target movement is not one fixed probability.
  • A handful of attempts gives a hit rate too noisy to plan around.

Common mistakes

  • Counting only attacks that were blocked or dodged as misses while leaving out whiffs.
  • Adding hit chances across attacks instead of using the complement rule.
  • Treating a 90% hit rate as a sure hit over ten attacks, when all ten land only about 35% of the time.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the chance of at least one hit higher than the hit rate?

Each extra attempt is another opportunity. With a 50% rate, missing three times in a row happens only 12.5% of the time, so at least one hit lands in the other 87.5%.

Why does the chance that every attack hits fall so fast?

It multiplies the hit rate by itself once per attempt. At 80% accuracy, five straight hits happen 0.8⁵ ≈ 32.8% of the time, even though each single attack usually lands.

How many attempts do I need before trusting my hit rate?

The standard error of a proportion is about √(p(1 − p) ÷ A). At 50% and 100 attempts that is 5 percentage points, so the true rate is plausibly anywhere from roughly 40% to 60%. Quadrupling the sample halves that spread.

Is hit rate the same as critical hit chance?

No. Hit rate measures whether an attack connects at all; critical chance usually applies only to attacks that already hit. To get crits per swing, multiply the two rates together.

What does 'Never at this rate' mean for the 95% target?

With zero recorded hits the observed probability is 0, so no number of attempts reaches 95% under this model. In practice it means your sample is too small or the attack truly cannot connect.

Can I use this for dice rolls in tabletop games?

Yes. Enter the faces that succeed as hits and the die size as attempts, for example 11 of 20 on a d20 for needing a 10 or higher, which gives 55%.
